- Abstract:
- The exitance of a certain amount of halide ions including Chloride (Cl-), Bromide (Br-) and Iodide (I-) in human body is crucial for ensuring health. However, exposure to high levels of these ions can cause diseases, such as goiter and neurological disfunction. As a result, the development of a simple and efficient analytical method for determining the aforesaid halide ions is so important. Triangular silver nanoparticles (TSNPs) display wide color variations due to their tunable plasmonic properties dependent on the aspect ratio of the nanoparticles. Hence, designing a colorimetric sensor array using the optical properties of TSNPs for determination and discrimination of halide ions is of great importance. Designing several chemical sensor elements in order to discriminate halide ions can be very expensive and time-consuming. For this reason, utilizing kinetic response profiles instead of several chemical sensor elements is a promising alternative in the development of array techniques. In this project, a time-dependent colorimetric sensor array was devised for determination and discrimination of halide ions using the optical properties of TSNPs. Due to the fact that citrate ions were used as a capping agent in the synthesis of TSNPs, these ions were selectively bonded to the [111] facet, directing the etching towards [100] facet. The effect of various experimental parameters, including pH and the content of nanoparticles, was examined to achieve the best performance in visual detection. Consequently, the attained results were investigated by multivariate analysis methods, including partial least squares discriminant analysis and partial least squares regression. In this way, the linear ranges of (0.95-0.60 µM), (1.50-0.70 µM) and (400-250 µM) were obtained for bromide, iodide and chloride ions respectively. In addition, the detection limits of 0.038 µM, 0.082 µM and 24.464 µM were obtained for bromide, iodide and chloride ion respectively, further exhibiting the capability of the sensor in detecting trace levels of halide ions. The proposed sensor demonstrated a great potential in detection and determination of halide ions in mixture samples. Finally, the proposed sensor was successfully employed for detection of halide ions in drinking water
