  7. Abstract:
  8. Dams are one of the vital infrastructures of the country and their correct use can have a significant impact on reducing costs and increasing their productivity. Due to the fact that dams are mainly large structures with a large number of components and with many complications of operation and maintenance, their operation and maintenance require spending a lot of money. On the other hand, the depth and volume of water behind the dams and the entanglement of the connection between the dams and the surrounding environment make the operation and maintenance of dams face many risks. The use of new technologies that can reduce the costs and risks of operating and maintaining dams can greatly help the process of operating and maintaining dams. In order to respond to this need, in this research, a method for improving the monitoring and maintenance system of dams based on the use of emerging technologies of building information modeling (BIM) and virtual reality (VR) has been proposed. In this method, after the development of the BIM model of the dam and its surrounding environment, the BIM model is examined from different dimensions and with the help of a long list, those activities of the dam monitoring and maintenance system that the development of the virtual reality model can help with are prepared. Slow is determined. In the next step, the virtual reality model of the dam is developed. This model is developed for the purpose of 3D simulation of operation and operation and maintenance processes in an immersive way and is used by specialists. The proposed method in this research was evaluated in a case study and its capabilities were evaluated by experts. Examining the capabilities of the model developed by experts shows the capabilities of this method in reducing cost and time, and increasing the accuracy and access of experts. This method can be very useful for performing tasks such as dredging management, inspecting the dam body in the depth of water behind the dam or in parts that are difficult to access, and establishing interaction between various internal and external forces involved in the dam monitoring and maintenance system. This research is one of the first researches that proposed the use of virtual reality technology to improve the monitoring and maintenance system of dams, especially for the work required in the depth of water behind the dam, and used it in a case study
