  7. Abstract:
  8. Current transformers are one of the key equipment of power networks that play a vital role in measuring, protecting and controlling the system. The proper operation of these equipments depends on the proper management of their temperature, because an increase in temperature can lead to a decrease in useful life, loss of efficiency and even irreparable failures. For this reason, analyzing and controlling the thermal behavior of these equipments, especially in critical conditions, is of particular importance. One of the biggest challenges in the operation of current transformers is the occurrence of a short-circuit fault, which leads to a sharp increase in temperature and can cause serious damage to the equipment. Optimal design and accurate analysis of the thermal behavior of these equipments can play an important role in reducing damages and improving their resistance against possible errors. In this study, first the basic thermal equations used in thermal analysis are stated and the thermal model of a resin current transformer with a conversion ratio of 50 to 5 amps and medium voltage, manufactured by Electro Pajhwok Company, is developed using the compact parameter method. The modeling is done step by step for each transformer component. To examine and verify this model, a three-dimensional finite element modeling of the transformer is performed and in the next step the thermal analysis under loading and short circuit fault conditions using the compact parameter thermal model is compared with laboratory data and finite element simulation. In the next step, the influence of different transformer components on the thermal analysis is investigated. The findings show that the proposed model has high accuracy in predicting the thermal behavior of the transformer
