- Abstract:
- The main subject of this research is to investigate the effects of two parallel wingtip vortices on each other. In fact, the goal is to determine how far apart the two runways should be when two aircraft take off from parallel runways at the same time so that the effects of the two wingtip vortices on adjacent aircraft are minimized. This research study is important to prevent the occurrence of tragic accidents caused by the failure to observe safe separation between aircraft. It is believed that the failure to observe the minimum separation and the subsequent occurrence of accidents are due to the significant increase in the volume of air traffic in the world. For this reason, the optimization of longitudinal and lateral distances has attracted the attention of many aviation activists. In this thesis, the physics of the interaction of vortices arising from the tips of two parallel wings and also two parallel aircraft has been investigated. After understanding the physics of the interaction phenomenon of these two vortices downstream of the wings, the geometric position of the wings relative to each other was changed and the effect of the interaction of the wingtip vortices on the aerodynamic coefficient for the downstream wing was studied. The physics governing the problem is an incompressible and three-dimensional turbulent flow field. To consider the effects of turbulence, a suitable model that can capture the vortices well and predict their lateral distribution well has been used. Considering the dimensions of the problem, the Reynolds number range has been considered in such a way that the flow is completely turbulent. One of the most important innovations of this research is the investigation of the possibility of reducing the distance between two parallel runways, which has been previously announced by ICAO. This will help both to better air traffic flow management and to increase safety
