Experimental and Simulation Study of Water Alternating Hydrocarbon - CO2 Mixture Gas in one of Iranian Oil Reservoirs

In this work the effect of composition changes of the injection gas (Hydrocarbon gas + carbon dioxide) on Water Alternating Gas (WAG) performance in immiscible flooding which has been rarely attended in the available literature is investigated. Core flood experiments are conducted on a 10 cm length Sarvak sandstone core sample at 46 degree C and at immiscible condition, i.e., below the minimum miscible pressure (MMP) of the oil sample using pure CO2 as injected Gas.The influence of injection WAG ratio on oil recovery also is investigated. Artificial injection brine which is made by dissolving NaCl into distilled water with 5000 ppm (mg/L), NaftShahr oil which has about 41 API gravity and methane-carbon dioxide gas mixture as injecting gas used as working fluids. In this work all tests are performed at the rate of 0.5cc/min. For investigating the effect of injecting gas composition on oil recovery, five tests which the mole percents of methane in mixture are 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% 100% are performed, in this tests ten alternate cycles of brine and gas with a slug size (half of a cycle) of 0.1 pore volumes (PV) and a water/gas ratio (volume ratio) of 1:1 are injected. In addition, three tests are performed on WAG ratio of 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1 with constant injected gas composition of 50% methane and 50% carbon dioxide. The results of the experiments which performed at different WAG ratios show that there is an optimum WAG ratio of 1, where the oil recovery is maximized. Laboratory results show that the recovery of pure carbon dioxide as gas slug in WAG process have highest recovery but is not a good choice for some fields (especially for offshore fields) due to facility corrosion, transportation and storage costs. Availability of Hydrocarbon gases at the field and well head make it a good choice for injection but since it has low recovery factor, if it is mixed with carbon dioxide the recovery will be high and the mixture will be a good choice since the corrosion problem can minimize and recovery will be high enough. The effect of well orientation on the oil recovery also is investigated, simulation study using E-300 compositional model also performed on the field scale and at the end of work the experimental and simulation results were compared
