  7. Abstract:
  8. The design and optimization of processes was focused in the past on economic issues such as profitability and return on investment, and less attention has been paid to environmental issues. In recent years, by introducing environmental criterion as pillars of sustainable development, environmental optimization of processes has becoming an inseparable element of the process engineering. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the compatibility of environmental indicators with economic objective. The purpose of this study is to investigate environmental indicators and economic objective function in optimizing the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) of an oil refinery. The CDU is one of the most important refinery unit in terms of energy consumption. In this research, the life cycle assessment method is performed, where environmental potential of global warming, acid rain, smog formation and water toxicity are investigated. Initially, sensitivity analysis of CDU unit is presented against variables such as temperature of feed to atmospheric and vacuum columns, steam flow rate, the temperature of Isomox return stream, which were selected as effective variables. The optimization of the CDU unit was performed using a genetic algorithm based on an economic or environmental objective function independently. In economic optimization mode, after 115 generations, the target economic function has increased by 5.05%. In environmental optimization mode, after 85 generations, the environmental indicators have improved by 22.97%. In the multi-objective optimization, two economic and environmental objective functions are combined to present the optimal solution set as Pareto curve .By using TOPSIS method, the optimal solution is proposed to improve the environmental indicators by 14.6% by decreasing 1.14% of the economic target. This research, due to the simultaneous discussion of two economic and environmental functions in optimizing a typical refinery in Iran, can greatly assist in decision making of the refinery's production
