  7. Abstract:
  8. Quince seed gum is a natural material that was used in Iranian traditional medicine for wound treatment. Alginate is a beneficial biomaterial that has been used in making commercial wound dressings for a long time. In this work, the preparation method and properties of films based on Alginate and Quince seed gum for drug delivery and wound healing have been investigated. According to the obtained results about crosslinking and plasticizing, the suitable condition of synthesis is 0.5% CaCl2 concentration, 2min soaking time, and 13% glycerol in crosslinking solution. In this crosslinking solution, a film with good mechanical properties (tensile strength: 13MPa, elongation: 27.3%, and Young’s modulus: 44.1 MPa) and physical properties (Swelling degree: 1000%, and WVT: 880 g/m2.day) is made. Also, honey was used in our work for co-plasticizing with glycerol and could improve elongation to 35%. In the main section of our research, films with different concentrations of alginate and quince seed gum (25%, 50%, and 75% of polysaccharides) were synthesized and have been examined with characterizations such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, Optical Microscope, thermal analysis, tensile test, swelling, WVT, solubility, contact angle, opacity, and toxicity. Finally, the sample with 25% Quince seed gum was selected for drug delivery because of its properties. For drug delivery, that sample was loaded with Curcumin, and Curcumin-Stearic Acid and drug delivery was considered. The results showed that Stearic Acid led to sustained drug delivery in a long period, so the sample with 25% Quince seed gum containing Curcumin and Stearic Acid is the optimum sample of this work. Based on the results of the toxicity test and cell behavior on this film, it has excellent potential for biomedical applications
