  3. Abstract:
  4. The physicochemical techniques presently available for treatment of H2S containing gases are many and varied. In near future small gas reservoirs with high concentration of H2S will be explored, therefore the gas processing industry is seeking novel, cost effective, environmentally compatible and operator friendly technologies applicable to the small volume producrs. The continuing search for more economical methods has led to investigations into microbiological processes. The biological process which has been studied in this research is Bio-SR process. Bio-SR process uses thiobacillus ferroxidans bacteria to regenerate gas treating solution (ferrous sulfate). In this way, the effects of process variables such as temperature, pH, elemental sulfur, ferrous and magnesium ions on oxidation of ferrous sulfate by a native Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, that was isolated from Sarcheshmeh copper mine in Iran, were investigated. The optimum temperature for the specific growth rate was 33°C. The pH range from 2 to 2.3 was optimum for the growth of the cells and effective biooxidation of ferrous sulfate. The maximum biooxidation rate, 1.2g/L.hr, was achieved in a culture initially containing 20.1g/L Fe+2. Mg+2 from 20mg/L to 120mg/L didn't have any effect on the efficiency of process, while presence of elemental sulfur had negative effect on the biooxidation. The results of this research show that the native bacterium has the ability to oxidize ferrous iron and to regenerate the solvent used for sweetening of sour gases./s
