  7. Abstract:
  8. Recent studies in nanotechnology field have shown this technology could solve many challenges and needs in oil and gas industry. As yet, many applications of nanoparticles in enhanced oil recovery have been reported. One of the most important applications is wettability alteration due to presence of nanoparticles in injecting fluid, which has recently been studied by several research groups. These studies indicate that, presence of nanoparticles in injecting water would improve oil recovery. However, there is no adequate information about the mechanisms affecting fluid flow in reservoir rock and its mathematical modeling. The aim of this project is to evaluate the effect of injection of hydrophilic silica nanoparticles in wettability alteration of reservoir rock and improvement in oil recovery. In experimental part, the effects of presence of nanoparticles in enhanced oil recovery of a sample from one of Iranian oil reservoirs will evaluate and relative permeability curves of two systems will determine. First one is an oil-wet system before injection of nanoparticles and the other one is a water-wet system after nanoparticle injection. These relative permeability data are needed to implement the mathematical model. In the second stage, a numerical model considering active mechanisms throughout displacement of nanoparticles in porous media was developed using MATLAB© software. In this model different equations like continuity,convection-diffusion and some auxiliary equations including reduction of porosity and permeability, are used. This model is capable of calculating changes in porosity and absolute permeability versus time along the core using determining concentration distribution. Moreover, because of gradual changes in wettability of system, relative permeability curves have been considered as a function of time.According to relative permeability curves obtained in laboratory in presence and absence of nanoparticles, wettability alteration of sample reservoir rock was concluded. Also, results of both experimental and numerical part shows that injection of hydrophilic silica nanoparticles into a porous media will results in increasing of oil production and reducing water cut. Furthermore, injection of these particles will postpone breakthrough time. Based on results of this project, final oil recovery in presence of nanoparticles could increase 10 to 20 percent
