    UALM: unsupervised active learning method for clustering low-dimensional data

    Abstract
    In this paper the Unsupervised Active Learning Method (UALM), a novel clustering method based on the Active Learning Method (ALM) is introduced. ALM is an adaptive recursive fuzzy learning algorithm inspired by some behavioral features of human brain functionality. UALM is a density-based clustering algorithm that relies on discovering densely connected components of data, where it can find clusters of arbitrary shapes. This approach is a noise-robust clustering method. The algorithm first blurs the data points as ink drop patterns, then summarizes the effects of all data points, and finally puts a threshold on the resulting pattern.     Abstract
    This paper uses singular value decomposition (SVD) for studying the dynamic properties of fatigue-loaded intervertebral disc. Previously, this problem had been addressed using mathematical models of using mass, spring and damper or based on poroelastic theory. This paper utilizes the signal processing approach and attempts to describe SVD based feature that can be an indicator for change in behavioral performance of the intervertebral disc warning the occurrence of temporary or permanent change in the structure or abnormality in behavior. The results are encouraging; however, further validation is required with more data

    In this paper, optimal approaches for controlling chaos is studied. The unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) of chaotic system are selected as desired trajectories, which the optimal control strategy should keep the system states on it. Classical gradient-based optimal control methods as well as modern optimization algorithm Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are utilized to force the chaotic system to follow the desired UPOs.     Abstract
    We study the homogenization of semilinear elliptic equations in divergence form with discontinuous oscillating coefficients in the whole ℝN. As is well known, the homogenization process in a classical framework is concerned with the study of asymptotic behavior of solutions u Isin; of boundary value problems when the period ∈ > 0 of the coefficients is small. By extending some of the classical homogenization results for quasi-linear elliptic equations to unbounded domains and, making use of various variational techniques, we shall establish some stability results under Γ-convergence of least energy solutions for such boundary value problems  

    Small signal circuit modeling for semiconductor self-assembled quantum dot laser

    Abstract
    In this paper, for the first time, we present a small signal circuit model of InGaAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dot (QD) laser, based on the standard rate equations. By using the presented model, modulation response of QD laser is investigated. The simulation results show that retarded carrier relaxation due to phonon bottleneck degrades the modulation and impulse responses of a QD laser. It is shown that modulation bandwidth is increased with larger inhomogeneous broadening. Also, our model describes the effects of carrier recombinations inside and outside of a QD region, on the modulation response behavior

    This paper investigated the headway distribution of platooning vehicles in work zones with and without automated Speed Photo Enforcement (SPE). Data from two work zones were collected and analyzed. The portion of vehicles traveling with a very short headway (less than 0.7 sec) was also examined. In addition, the behavior of vehicles near the law enforcement vehicles was analyzed in terms of applying brakes and changing lane in one of the work zones.     Abstract
    We present a novel deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) model for predicting human behavior in repeated games. The model is the first deep neural network presented on repeated games that is able to be trained on games with arbitrary size of payoff matrices. Our neural network takes the players’ payoff matrices and the history of the play as input, and outputs the predicted action picked by the first player in the next round. To evaluate the model’s performance, we apply it to some experimental games played by humans and measure the rate of correctly predicted actions.     Opposing trends of geometrical parameters in maximisation of micro-ring resonator quality factor

    Opposing trends of geometrical parameters in minimisation of bending loss and thus in maximising the quality factor are briefly discussed for micro-ring resonators. It is shown that, while the quality factor of low order modes is an oscillatory function of geometrical parameters, the quality factor of high order modes is a monotonic function. The former has discrete pairs of optimum inner and outer ring radii which maximises the quality factor. In contrast, the quality factor of the latter has no local maximum.
