Improving the Performance of the Electrostatic Precipitator Used in Cement Plant

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sabah Kadhm Alkaabi, Dhiyaa (Author) ; Sadrhosseini, Hani (Supervisor) ; Pasharavesh, Abdolreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Electrostatic precipitators are widely used in cement plants to remove impurities and dust from the exhaust gases. The filtration mechanism is based on using high intensity electric fields which first ionize the particles and then absorb them toward the collecting electrodes. The corrosion effect is one of the major problems associated with electrostatic precipitators which not only can negatively affect their operation efficiency but also decreases their life-time through breakage occurrence in the corroded electrodes. One of the commonly used methods to suppress this negative effect and increase the total working hours of the device is to cut the bottom part of the first collecting plate...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadi Kazemabadi, Abolfazl (Author) ; Hosseini Kordkheili, Ali (Supervisor) ; Zabihollah, Abolghasem (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
In this paper, a finite element formulation is presented to study the thermoelastic behavior of Functionally Graded (FG) axisymmetric coating in shell structures. The power law distribution model is assumed for the composition of the constituent materials in thickness direction. The Plasma Spray with multi steps coating method is considered for coating method. The procedure adopted to derive the finite element formulation contains the analytical through-the-thickness integration inherently. So the explicit through-the-thickness integration becomes possible after defining a two-noded, three parameters degenerated axisymmetric FG element. The nonlinear heat transfer equation is used for...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Ebrahim Fathabadi, Hadi (Author) ; Ghorbani, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis a smart anticorrosive pH-responsive coat was developed with layer by layer (LbL) technique in the assembly of SiO2/CTAB/PSS/HMTA/PSS/PEI/PSS. SiO2 nanoparticles were prepared from Matland Company (Iran) with average size of 24 nm. At first, the corrosion inhibition of HMTA for API 5L Grade B steel in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was investigated. Tafel polarization technique showed the optimum concentration of HMTA was 0.08 M with 92% corrosion inhibition efficiency as the morphology of coverage and adsorption on the steel surface was confirmed by SEM and EDS. AFM results showed the roughness of the surface decreased from 241 nm to 56 nm that is attributed to HMTA adsorption on the...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Imanieh, Iman (Author) ; Afshar, Abdollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Smart coatings which prevent corrosion by several mechanisms recently have been carefully planned. One of these mechanisms is the use of ion exchangers like Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) in the coating network. In this study, the LDH containing a kind of green inhibitor (sodium molybdate) was synthesized and utilized in a Poly-Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) base coating applied on the aluminium (5054 series) surface. After evaluating the LDH performance, the inhibitor release from the LDH crystals was examined by changing significant parameters like MII/MIII (the molar ratio of divalent ions into trivalent ions), pH, aging time and temperature. Considering the LDH morphology or the thickness of the...

Cathodic Protection of Underground Pipeline by Polyurethane Coating

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rajabpour, Foroud (Author) ; Dolati, Abolghasem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Selection of appropriate coating system is the most important subject in corrosion control of buried pipelines. Corrosion control of buried pipelines is achieved by using a combination of barrier coatings and cathodic protection (CP). Applying barrier coating can decrease the protection current of CP. However, at the coating holidays the pipeline act as cathode generating hydroxyl ion and hydrogen electrochemically. Therefore the selected coating should be compatible with the alkaline condition. This research focuses on evaluating of an epoxy-tar and a urethane-tar based coating. Coatings performance has been tested by accelerated corrosion test methods (i.e. Salt spray according to ASTM...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Razavizadeh, Omid (Author) ; Ghorbani, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Zinc–silicanano-composite coatings were produced by successive dip coatand sintering procedure from different sol-gel solutions. The surface and cross-sectional morphologies of Zn-SiO2 nano-particles (NPs) were examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Corrosion resistance evaluated by means of polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that even thin films of Zn-SiO2 in orders of 200 nm can have corrosion rates as low as conventional hot dip galvanized steels. Multi-layers coatings have been studied and showed that 10 layers coating with the thickness of 2m has the lowest corrosion rate with the passive region in anodic branch. Corrosion...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Alemi, Bita (Author) ; Mohammadi Shodja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, by adding a small amount of a desired nanomaterial to a matrix having certain properties one may design a multifunctional nanocomposites with a remarkably improved macroscopic properties of interest. The capability of conventional continuum theories in treating the problems of embedded ultra-small inhomogeneity with any of its dimensions comparable to the characteristic lengths of the involved constituent phases is questioned, mainly, on the grounds of the accuracy and the size effect. In this work, effort is firstly directed at the prediction of the macroscopic shear modulus of composites consisting of nano-/micro-size fibers of elliptic cross-sections via couple stress theory, a...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Zarghami, Vahid (Author) ; Ghorbani, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Shokrgozar, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor) ; Pooshang Bagheri, Kamran (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Aseptic loosening and infection are two major problems of bone implants. Aseptic loosening occurs due to poor cell growth and poor adhesion to the implant surface over time. Bone infection at the implant site occurs mainly by the staphylococcus aureus bacteria. In some cases, infection occurs in the short term and in the early times after implantation, and in some cases, infection occurs in later times. The aim of this study is to synthesize and evaluate antibacterial coatings, while having cell growth-promoting components and cell differentiation to solve bone implant problems simultaneously. Also, the issue of bacterial resistance to antibiotics and their risks in bone implants is another...
