, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohseni, Mahdi (Author) ; Arjmand, Navid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Biomechanical models require body posture to evaluate the risk of musculoskeletal injuries during daily/occupational activities like manual material handling (MMH). The procedure to measure body posture via motion-analysis techniques is complex, time-consuming, and limited to equipped laboratories. This study aims to develop an easy-to-use yet accurate model that predict human whole-body static posture (3D body coordinates and anatomical joint angles) during different MMH activities. Twenty healthy male right-handed individuals with body mass index between 18 and 26 performed 204 symmetric and asymmetric MMH activities. Each person reached (i.e., without any load in hands) the destinations...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Daroudi, Sajjad (Author) ; Arjmand, Navid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Ground reaction forces (GRFs) and their centers of pressure (CoPs) are essential inputs in musculoskeletal models of the spine that study load-lifting tasks. While GRFs and CoPs are usually measured in vivo via force-plates, they can be predicted based on motion equations, developed in AnyBody Modelling System (AMS) thus eliminating the need for laboratory equipment and in vivo measurements. This study aims to develop an easy-to-use yet accurate model that predict GRFs and CoPs during different Manual Material Handling (MMH) activities using AnyBody Modelling System and artificial neural networks. First, the accuracy of the AMS GRF prediction algorithm was evaluated for 8 normal- and 4...

Prediction of HLA-Peptide Binding using 3D Structural Features

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bagh Golshani, Marjan (Author) ; Sharifi Zarchi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The human leukocyte antigen protein, commonly known as HLA, has the ability to present small protein fragments called peptides on the surface of cells, whether they originate from within the cell or externally. The binding of these peptides to HLA receptors is a crucial step that triggers an immune response. By estimating the affinity between peptides and HLA class I, we can identify novel antigens that have the potential to be targeted by cancer therapeutic vaccines. Computational methods that predict the binding affinity between peptides and HLA receptors have the potential to expedite the design process of cancer vaccines. Currently, most computational methods exclusively rely on...

Money, Economic Order & The Problem of Moral Responsibility

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shahrabi Farahani, Sajjad (Author) ; Taqhavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the history of philosophy, the discussion of moral responsibility is tied to "Free Will" metaphysical controversies. Philosophers generally expect that people have "alternative possibilities" -that require them not to be bound to a deterministic situation- or if they don't have such possibilities, at least be able to "control" their actions, and if they don't know all aspects of what they do, at least not to be in ignorance about that, according to Aristotle. In the case of having such minimal possibilities, it is that one can be considered morally responsible for his or her actions. This broad conception of moral responsibility can be traced from Aristotle's discussions in the...

    Abstract
In his book “Groundwork for the Metaphysic of Morals ”, Kant tries to pesent a formula for the supreme pinciple of morality. He ends up introducing three formulae that he thinks are all the same and just pesenting one formula In three different ways. After publishing this book, many criticisms were levelled against both his way of argument and the efficacy of his proposed formulae. In this enquiry, by focusing on the first two chapters of Kant’s book, and by considering the universal law formula and the humanity formula, we try to answer these criticisms. In the way, we make use of the new reading of Kant’s view- the critical reading- proposed by Samuel Kerstein, according to which Kant’s...
