    Abstract
In this work, biosorption of Zirconium from aqueous solution by A.niger as a biosorbent was investigated. For this goal, both of live and dried biomasses were used. The effect of factors pH, temperature, contact time, initial concentration of metal and biomass dosage were investigated on biosorption. To preparing dried biomass, the live biomass was dried at 60-80 º C for 24 hr and then this dried cell was crushed by mortar and pestle and the drying biomass was ground through a set of sieve with 100 mesh. Also, effect of the pretreatment of biomass by NaOH 0.5 M on biosorption was studied. Optimization of factors was performed by Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The experiments were...

    Abstract
Water plays an essential role in the daily lives of humans, plants, and animals. Due to the lack of safe water on the planet, in recent years there have been many challenges in the field of water treatment, which has made water desalination technology always one of the most advanced technologies. The most advanced technology in this field is the use of nanotechnology in water and wastewater treatment, especially the use of Membrane processes such as reverse osmosis. Unlike conventional reverse osmosis membranes, nanoporous membranes can ensure rapid water transfer during the displacement process. The purpose of this thesis is to introduce new monolayers that have an incredible performance in...

An Experimental-Theoretical Study on Batch (Static) Sublimation and Derivation of a Correlation for its Heat Transfer Coefficient

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mottafegh, Amir Reza (Author) ; Otukesh, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The major features of batch sublimation were investigated in an experimental-theoretical study. An experimental setup with real-time displays, sublimated dry ice blocks of different sizes, with circular or rectangular geometries. When temperature of hotplate was changed from -30 to 200 oC, heat transfer coefficient “hsub” decreased from 126 to 70 W/m2K, while thermal flux increased, linearly. Weight and area of the block had a positive/negative effects on “hsub”, respectively. In theoretical part, at first, two “linear-gradient” and “cubic” models were developed by a combined mass-momentum-energy balance. The latter used Von Karman temperature profile, and in cases of circular and...

Low-frequency Model for Long-channel Monolayer Transistors

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Omdeh Ghiasi, Hesam (Author) ; Safarian, Amin Ghasem (Supervisor) ; Pourfath, Mahdi (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Transistors’ miniaturization and advent of short-channel effects causes searching for another devices with least adverse characteristics in short channels. Among all the considered devices, monolayer transistors attracted the attention. Although most of the papers in literature focused on the physical phenomenon of the device, circuit design of these transistors have been overlooked. Most of the papers related to monolayer transistors did not explain the design methodology of their circuits and they confined their work just to the report of the circuits constructed with 2D-based transistors. In order to take advantage of 2D materials in electronic circuits, simple modelling for...

Kinetic Modeling of Coke Formation in PDH over Pt-Sn/Al2O3 in Presence of Oxygenated Additives

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Samavati, Abolfazl (Author) ; Khorasheh, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Propylene, as one of the most important raw materials of petrochemical industries, is produced through different methods. One of the major methods is propane dehydrogenation. This reaction is endothermic and many by-products will be produced in high temperature. Therefore catalytic dehydrogenation is preferred. Reduction in catalyst's activity and too many side reactions are the most important problems. Coke formation is the most effective reason of deactivation. Main source of coke is propylene. Experiments show that very small amount of water presence within reaction can reduce rate of coke formation. Water content growth does not always increase activity. If water be more than optimum...

Investigation of Impurities and Structural Defects in Graphene

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rostami, Melika (Author) ; Faez, Rahim (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis the effects of impurities and different defects on electrical and magnetic properties of monolayer and bilayer graphene is investigated. Calculations are performed using density function theory. Alloying monolayer graphene with boron and nitrogen the energy gaps of 0.7 and 0.6 eV are obtained, respectively. Moreover, we show that BN is a good candidate for opening the band gap in graphene. Alloying monolayer graphene with BN the energy gap of 1.2 eV is obtained. Another way of opening band gap is to somehow break the symmetry between layers of the bilayer graphene. By alloying one layers of bilayer graphene with B, N or B-N, although the symmetry of layers is broken, each...

    Abstract
In this article, the synthesis, characterization, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements are reported for ferrocene-terminated oligophenyleneimine (OPI_Fc) and ferrocene-terminated conjugation-broken oligophenyleneimine (CB-OPI_Fc) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) in two different electrolytes, namely, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium-bis (trifluoromethyl-sulfonyl) imide (EMITFSI) ionic liquid and tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (Bu4NPF6) in acetonitrile (0.1 M solution). The SAMs were synthesized on Au surfaces by the sequential imine condensation reactions. CV was used to investigate the kinetics of electron transfer (ET) to the ferrocene, and it was observed that the standard ET rate...

Mechanism of photocatalytic reduction of CO2 by Ag3PO4(111)/g-C3N4 nanocomposite: a first-principles study

    , Article Journal of Physical Chemistry C ; Volume 123, Issue 36 , 2019 , Pages 22191-22201 ; 19327447 (ISSN) Tafreshi, S. S ; Moshfegh, A. Z ; De Leeuw, N. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to investigate the electronic structure and photocatalytic activity of a hybrid Ag3PO4(111)/g-C3N4 structure. Due to Ag(d) and O(p) states forming the upper part of the valence band and C(p), N(p), and Ag(s) the lower part of the conduction band, the band gap of the hybrid material is reduced from 2.75 eV for Ag3PO4(111) and 3.13 eV for monolayer of g-C3N4 to about 2.52 eV, enhancing the photocatalytic activity of the Ag3PO4(111) surface and g-C3N4 sheet in the visible region. We have also investigated possible reaction pathways for photocatalytic CO2 reduction on the Ag3PO4(111)/g-C3N4 nanocomposite to determine the most...

    Abstract
We study topological phase transitions and topological quantum field effect transistor in monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) using a two-band Hamiltonian model. Without considering the quadratic (q 2) diagonal term in the Hamiltonian, we show that the phase diagram includes quantum anomalous Hall effect, quantum spin Hall effect, and spin quantum anomalous Hall effect regions such that the topological Kirchhoff law is satisfied in the plane. By considering the q 2 diagonal term and including one valley, it is shown that MoS2 has a non-Trivial topology, and the valley Chern number is non-zero for each spin. We show that the wave function is (is not) localized at the edges when the q 2...

    Abstract
The authors propose a new design for monolayer superconducting planar flux transformer integrated with a coplanar resonator serving as a gigahertz range tank circuit for high-Tc rf-SQUID magnetometers. Based on the proposed design, which is optimized using the finite element method, the transformer-resonator configuration is made of 200-nm-thick monolayer YBCO film on a crystalline LaAlO3 substrate. In this optimized design, the SQUID magnetometer is coupled through flip-chip configuration with the configuration providing high coupling coefficient between the devices. The design permits coupling of the rf signals to the SQUID efficiently, whereas the transformer is designed to couple the dc...

    , Article Electroanalysis ; Volume 24, Issue 2 , February , 2012 , Pages 425-432 ; 10400397 (ISSN) Shahrokhian, S ; Mahdavi Shakib, A ; Ghalkhani, M ; Saberi, R. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The voltammetric behavior of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) on a gold electrode modified with self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of cysteamine (CA) conjugated with functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was investigated. The film modifier of functionalized SAM was characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and also, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) using para-hydroquinone (PHQ) as a redox probe. For the binary mixture of DA and UA, the voltammetric signals of these two compounds can be well separated from each other, allowing simultaneous determination of DA and UA. The effect of various experimental parameters on the voltammetric responses of DA and...

    Abstract
Herein, enhancement of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) performance is reported by combining the merits of the dye loading of TiO2 nanoparticles and light scattering, straight carrier transport path, and efficient electron collection efficiency of TiO2 cubes. We fabricate DSC devices with various arrangement styles and compositions of the electrodes in the forms of monolayer and double layer films. For this purpose, the solvothermal synthesized TiO2 cubic particles (100-600 nm) are employed as the scattering layer, whereas TiO2 nanoparticles (15-30 nm) synthesized via a combination of solvothermal and sol-gel routes are used as the active layer of devices. We improve the photovoltaic...

Specific picomolar detection of a breast cancer biomarker her-2/neu protein in serum: electrocatalytically amplified electroanalysis by the aptamer/peg-modified electrode

    , Article ChemElectroChem ; Volume 4, Issue 4 , 2017 , Pages 872-879 ; 21960216 (ISSN) Salimian, R ; Kékedy Nagy, L ; Ferapontova, E. E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Specific and sensitive electroanalysis of blood-circulating protein cancer biomarkers is often complicated by interference from serum proteins nonspecifically adsorbing at the biosensing interface and masking specific reactions of interest. Here, we have developed an electrocatalytically amplified assay for specific and sensitive analysis of human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2/neu, a protein cancer biomarker over-expressed in breast cancers) that allows us to avoid both the interference from bovine serum albumin (BSA) and electrocatalytic amplification of the signal stemming from the specific aptamer−HER-2/neu binding. A HER-2/neu-specific thiolated aptamer sequence was...

    Abstract
Single-layer MoS2-MoO3-x heterojunction nanosheets with visible-light-sensitive band gap energy and average lateral dimensions of ~70 nm were synthesized by using a two-step combined exfoliation method. The exfoliation was initiated from pristine MoS2, while some sulfur sites in expanded MoS2 sheets during exfoliating were substituted by ambient non-thermal oxygen, resulting in formation of α-MoO3-x crystalline domains. The morphological features, crystalline structure, phase formation, number of layers, and optical properties of the MoS2-MoO3-x nanosheets were determined by atomic force microscopy; X-ray diffraction; field emission electron microscopy; transmission electron microscopy; and...

    Abstract
Controlled growth of atomic monolayers of IV-VII transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has provided unprecedented opportunities to fabricate modern optoelectronic nanodevices. However, synthesis of large-area and high quality two-dimensional TMDs is still challenging. We have synthesized WS2 and MoS2 nanosheets by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) at wide-range of processing conditions. The nanostructures were analyzed by optical and confocal microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction to determine the thickness, lateral size and structure of the deposits. Through designing and performing of a set of controlled experiments as well as...

    Abstract
Several evidences support the idea that a small population of tumour cells representing self-renewal potential are involved in initiation, maintenance, metastasis, and outcomes of cancer therapy. Elucidation of microRNAs/genes regulatory networks activated in cancer stem cells (CSCs) is necessary for the identification of new targets for cancer therapy. The aim of the present study was to predict the miRNAs pattern, which can target both metastasis and self-renewal pathways using integration of literature and data mining. For this purpose, mammospheres derived from MCF-7, MDA-MB231, and MDA-MB468 were used as breast CSCs model. They had higher migration, invasion, and colony formation...

    Abstract
Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures of two-dimensional monolayers are a relatively new class of materials with highly tunable band alignment, bandgap energy, and bandgap transition type. In this study, we performed density functional theory calculations to investigate how a vdW heterostructure of heptazine-based graphitic carbon nitride (hg-C3N4) and graphitic zinc oxide (g-ZnO) monolayers is formed (hg-C3N4/g-ZnO). This heterostructure is a potential solar-driven photocatalyst for the water-splitting reaction. Upon the formation of the heterostructure, a type-I indirect bandgap (Eg = 2.08 eV) is created with appropriate conduction band minimum and valence band maximum levels relative to...

Ab initio study of electronic effects in the ZnO/TiO2 core/shell interface: Application in dye sensitized solar cells

    , Article RSC Advances ; Vol. 4, issue. 1 , April , 2014 , p. 301-307 Pazoki, M ; Nafari, N ; Taghavinia, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Core/shell structure of ZnO nanowires coated with a monolayer of TiO 2 is investigated using Density Functional Theory (DFT). The electronic states of the semiconductor is calculated and compared before and after coating of the TiO2 monolayer on a ZnO [101 0] surface. The effect of TiO2 coating induce surface states changes and shifts the conduction and valence band edges to higher energies. Our results, in qualitative agreement with the experimental work of Matt Law et al. (J. Phys. Chem. B, 110, 22652), show an increase in open circuit voltage and a decrease in short circuit current in ZnO/TiO2 core shell dye sensitized solar cells. Regarding the semiconductor density of states (DOS), TiO2...

    Abstract
To improve the efficiency of electrochemical processes for environmental remediation, we present a new type of hybrid nanomaterials based on leaf-like copper-based quaternary transition metals and spongy monolayer graphene. To demonstrate the functionality of the hybrid electrocatalyst, fast and competent electrooxidation of water and glucose is shown. The mechanism of improved catalysis is ascribed to the synergetic catalytic effect of quaternary Cu-Ni-Fe-Co alloy with dendritic morphology along with the highly conductive and spongy structure of the graphene monolayer. It is shown that water oxidation can be performed at a low overpotential of 315 mV to reach a current denisty of 100 mA...
