Design of a Phased Array Receiver for 5G Applications

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tahbaz Alli, Parsa (Author) ; Sharif Bakhtiar, Mehrdad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Next-generation wireless communication requires phased-array systems to ensure Gb/s data communication. This work demonstrates a four-element phased array receiver based on N-path filters for the 5G-FR1 frequency band. The behaviour of the circuit including non-idealities and effects due to mismatch in the paths is modeled and verified via simulations. As the time-variant nature of the N-path filter introduces multiple frequency translations, third harmonic selection of the switching frequency rather than the fundamental helps to reduce the input frequency of the multiphase clock generator by a factor of three. Therefore, the proposed structure is capable of third harmonic reception as well...

    Abstract
Loose parts in the primary circuit of a nuclear power plant, causing damage to the fuel rods and other equipment, so early localization and mass estimation of this pieces can provide context of safety measures for the reactor after an event.Acoustic signals emitted by the location of these parts provide enough information to estimate their location and mass. So with obtain time-of-arrival differences between sensors and sound velocity can be estimate loose part location. In this thesis signals of the sensors in Bushehr power plant monitoring system are analyzied. To estimate the loose part locations, the time delays between sensors must be calculated. The time difference between the sensors...

Ultrastrong optical modulation in waveguides by conducting interfaces

, Article Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering ; Volume 8631 , 2013 ; 0277786X (ISSN) ; 9780819494009 (ISBN) Karimi, F ; Khorasani, S ; The Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Here, an in-depth study of a novel electro-optic phenomenon suggested earlier in optical waveguides, referred to as the conducting interfaces, is carried out. It is shown that it would be possible to achieve a very strong optical modulation effect in slab waveguides fabricated on the standard III-V InAlGaAs compound platform. The electro-optic effect is obtained by controlling the density and population of the electron and hole states in the well layer. The additional phase shift contributed to the reflection phase of the guided electromagnetic wave constitutes an ultrastrong source of optical modulation and phase control. It is estimated that a Mach-Zhender configuration based on this...

Transmission capability improvement using wide area monitoring and control

    , Article 2008 IEEE Electrical Power and Energy Conference - Energy Innovation, Vancouver, BC, 6 October 2008 through 7 October 2008 ; January , 2008 ; 9781424428953 (ISBN) Karimi, M. J ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Nourizadeh, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Operation of transmission lines are usually limited by stability limits rather than thermal capacity limits. Thermal limit of transmission lines is a physical limitation of their components and not related with the overall power system characteristics, but stability limits are strictly related with power system characteristics. This paper presents an approach for increasing stability limits using PSS. © 2008 IEEE

    Abstract
The concept of a nonlinear transfer function of a fibre-optic communication link is reviewed. Also an approximation of the nonlinear transfer function is introduced, which allows to define an equivalent single-span model of a dispersion-managed multi-span system. In this paper we will show its limits of validity and try to extent these limits by enhancing the theoretical model. In this respect we will discuss the impact of dispersion precompensation and show the influence of residual dispersion per span, number of spans and local dispersion on transmission systems with on-off keying and differential phase-shift keying modulation formats. This approach allows fast assessment of the...

Simply decoded efficient full-rate space-time block codes over correlated Rician fading channels

    , Article IET Communications ; Volume 8, Issue 10 , 3 July 2014 , Pages 1684-1695 Kuhestani, A ; Pilaram, H ; Mohammadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A novel technique is presented to design efficient full-rate space-time block codes (STBCs) over correlated Rician fading channels. The authors first derive a formula for the achievable information rate of a linear dispersion coded multi-input single-output system as a function of correlation at the transmitter in a Rician fading channel. In addition, the authors obtain the bit-error-rate (BER) equations for this system, when multiple phase shift keying and multiple quadrature amplitude modulation schemes are used at the transmitter. Therefore with regard to derived formulae and using a genetic algorithm, a method is presented to construct STBCs over correlated Rician fading channels. The...

    Abstract
Rotating field gradients (RFGs), generated by simultaneously applying sine- and cosine-modulated gradient waveforms along two perpendicular directions, provide an alternative diffusion sensitization mechanism for magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy. Two RFGs with a 90-degree phase shift between them are applied around the 180-degree RF pulse in a spin echo sequence to measure the diffusion orientation distribution function (dODF) directly. The technique obviates transforming the data from a space reciprocal to the displacement space. Here, we compare RFG results with those obtained by two pulsed field gradient (PFG) techniques: q-ball imaging (QBI) and its extension to constant solid...

Phase shift calibration based on Fresnel diffraction from phase plates

    , Article Journal of Optics (United Kingdom) ; Volume 14, Issue 12 , 2012 ; 20408978 (ISSN) Aalipour, R ; Aminjafari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
When a transparent plane-parallel plate is illuminated at a boundary region by a parallel monochromatic beam of light, Fresnel diffraction occurs because of the abrupt change in phase imposed by the finite change in refractive index at the plate boundary. The intensity of the diffraction fringes varies periodically with changes in the optical path difference of the light passing through the plate edge. The optical path difference depends on the incident angle of the light, the refractive index of the plate and surrounding medium, and the wavelength of the light. Plotting the intensity of the diffraction fringes versus optical path difference provides a general phase shift method for phase...

Phase-noise measurement of microwave oscillators using phase-shifterless delay-line discriminator

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques ; Volume 58, Issue 2 , January , 2010 , Pages 468-477 ; 00189480 (ISSN) Gheidi, H ; Banai, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this paper, a modified method based on the frequency discriminator technique for measuring phase noise of microwave oscillators is presented. In the proposed method, the phase shifter is omitted. In contrast, a 90° hybrid with one more channel containing a phase detector, and a low-noise amplifier is added to the measurement setup. It can be said that an in-phase/quadrature phase-noise detection has been developed. With the proposed method, tuning of the variable phase shifter is not needed anymore. Therefore, the measurement is done automatically, and as a result, the measurement time is decreased. Another considerable advantage of this method is that the method is theoretically...

Performance comparison of coherent and non-coherent multicarrier frequency-hopping code division multiple-access systems

    , Article 2004 IEEE 15th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications, PIMRC 2004, Barcelona, 5 September 2004 through 8 September 2004 ; Volume 1 , 2004 , Pages 165-169 Yazdi, Z. Z ; Nasiri Kenari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
In this paper, we evaluate and compare the multiuser performance of the multicarrier frequency-hopping (MCFH) CDMA system using coherent and non-coherent detections in AWGN and slowly frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channels in a downlink application. For fair comparison, we use BFSK modulation for both cases. Our numerical results indicate that in both AWGN and fading channels, the coherent detection sub-stantially outperforms the non-coherent detection. Furthermore, it has been realized that the performance enhancement due to the diversity order is only observable for coherent detection

On the contribution of circumferential resonance modes in acoustic radiation force experienced by cylindrical shells

    , Article Journal of Sound and Vibration ; Vol. 333, issue. 22 , October , 2014 , p. 5746-5761 Rajabi, M ; Behzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A body insonified by a constant (time-varying) intensity sound field is known to experience a steady (oscillatory) force that is called the steady-state (dynamic) acoustic radiation force. Using the classical resonance scattering theorem (RST) which suggests the scattered field as a superposition of a resonance field and a background (non-resonance) component, we show that the radiation force acting on a cylindrical shell may be synthesized as a composition of three components: background part, resonance part and their interaction. The background component reveals the pure geometrical reflection effects and illustrates a regular behavior with respect to frequency, while the others...

On optimum asymptotic multiuser efficiency of randomly spread CDMA

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Information Theory ; Volume 61, Issue 12 , 2015 , Pages 6635-6642 ; 00189448 (ISSN) Sedaghat, M. A ; Müller, R. R ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We extend the result by Tse and Verdú on the optimum asymptotic multiuser efficiency of randomly spread code division multiple access (CDMA) with binary phase shift keying input. Random Gaussian and random binary antipodal spreading are considered. We obtain the optimum asymptotic multiuser efficiency of a K-user system with spreading gain N when K and N → ∞ and the loading factor, (K/N) , grows logarithmically with K under some conditions. It is shown that the optimum detector in a Gaussian randomly spread CDMA system has a performance close to the single user system at high signal-to-noise ratio when K and N → ∞ and the loading factor, (K/N), is kept less than (log3 K/2). Random binary...

    Abstract
Usually the digital phase shifters are used to steer the beam of a phased array antenna, and the accuracy of beam steering and other properties of the radiation pattern is dependent on the number of bits of the phase shifter and its resolution. In this paper the results of simulations, accomplished using a number of phase feeding methods in order to reduce the phase quantization error effects are presented and three new methods are introduced and compared with the previous works. Abstract
In this paper, we evaluate and compare the multiuser performance of the Fast Frequency-Hopping (FFH) and the MultiCarrier slow Frequency-Hopping (MC-FH) systems employing non-coherent detection for both uncoded and coded schemes in AWGN and slowly frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channels, based on Gaussian distribution assumption for the decision variable. Our numerical resulte indicate that with non-coherent detection, both systems show the same performance. However, the MC-FH system can be easily implemented using FFT algorithm. Furthermore with a slow hopping rate and high number of carriers, a coherent detection for the MC-FH system is feasible. Our results will indicate that the...

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider an iterative multiuser receiver for the coded MC-FH system, first introduced in [4], in the presence of partial-band interference. The structure of the receiver consists of two principal parts: multiuser soft input soft output (SISO) detector and SISO channel decoder. When the channel is under the attack of jamming, for optimum detection we propose to add a jamming estimator to multiuser SISO detector. So, the new SISO multiuser detector consists of multiuser likelihood calculator (MULC) and iterative jamming estimator (JE). The numerical results show that the proposed receiver works quite well compared to the ideal receiver which has the perfect channel state...

    Abstract
In this study, a new isolated high-gain switched-boost DC/DC converter employing two symmetrical switched-boost networks along with a modified control algorithm based on the combination of the pulse-width modulation (PWM) and phase-shift modulation is proposed. Utilising symmetrical switched-boost networks increase the voltage gain of the proposed converter, significantly. Moreover, applying the proposed switching algorithm on the proposed isolated switched-boost DC/DC converter leads to the following advantages: (i) high-voltage gain, (ii) zero voltage switching (ZVS) turn-on of two switches, (iii) ZVS turnoff of two switches and (iv) appearing three controllable parameters (the...

Harmonic disturbance attenuation in a three-pole active magnetic bearing test rig using a modified notch filter

    , Article JVC/Journal of Vibration and Control ; Volume 23, Issue 5 , 2017 , Pages 770-781 ; 10775463 (ISSN) Mahdi Darbandi, S ; Behzad, M ; Salarieh, H ; Mehdigholi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This study is concerned with the problem of harmonic disturbance rejection in active magnetic bearing systems. A modified notch filter is presented to identify both constant and harmonic disturbances caused by sensor runout and mass unbalance. The proposed method can attenuate harmonic displacement and currents at the synchronous frequency and its integer multiples. The reduction of stability is a common problem in adaptive techniques because they alter the original closed-loop system. The main advantage of the proposed method is that it is possible to determine the stability margins of the system by few parameters. The negative phase shift of the modified notch filter can be tuned to...

    Abstract
A fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based delay line (or phase shifter) has been developed for microwave over fiber and phased array antenna (PAA) applications. The scheme uses band edge time delay of tunable fiber gratings to provide a continuously controllable microwave time delay or phase shift. Following the formulation and analysis of the device behavior, simulations of amplitude and phase responses are conducted. The results confirm the validity of theoretical predictions
