Design and Dynamic Analysis of a Variable Center of Mass Position Estimation Test System

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahalati Rayeni, Amir (Author) ; Saghafi, Fariborz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The weight characteristics of the aircraft, including the location of the center of mass, has a direct and important impact on its stability and control. For example, air dropping is one of those cases in which weight characteristics are subject to considerable changes. Today, the development of algorithms for accurate estimation of weight characteristics has flourished both on-line and off-line. Therefore, it is important to develop the means by which kinetic-based estimation algorithms can be tested. The device should be efficient both in terms of mechanical performance and Implementation capability. To do this, we have to design an outline of the machine, which has the same dynamics as a...

    , Article 2012 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies, ISGT 2012, 16 January 2012 through 20 January 2012 ; 2012 ; 9781457721588 (ISBN) Kazari, H ; Abbaspour-Tehrani Fard, A ; Dobakhshari, A. S ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
With the increasing penetration of renewable energies as distributed generation (DG) in power systems, technical problems arise in both distribution and transmission system level. Voltage rise is the main barrier for connection of DGs in rural areas, while excessive reactive power demand from transmission system is the major concern for Transmission System Operators (TSO). Here, a centralized control scheme based on the Smart Grid is proposed to reduce the impact on the transmission system voltages and improve its stability, while mitigating the voltage rise issue in the distribution network. Reactive power output of DGs, substation capacitors and tap setting of transmission transformer are...

    Value-based reserve market settlement

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 10, Issue 9 , 2016 , Pages 2216-2224 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Nouri, A ; Hosseini, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology
Institution of Engineering and Technology  2016
    Abstract
The main focus of this study is on reserve market settlement in an electricity market with marginal pricing scheme as the pricing mechanism. Following a day-ahead market clearing, the marginal prices are found using the appropriate Lagrange multipliers as the bi-products of the optimisation process. The payments to energy and reserve providers can then be found based on these prices. However, it is hard to find an appropriate settlement scheme that provides the fair and justifiable consumer payments based on marginal pricing scheme considering the actual reserve functions in power systems. In this study, a reserve marginal pricing that is based on a proper reserve marginal price definition...

, Article IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe ; 2012 ; 9781467325974 (ISBN) Salehi Dobakhshari, A ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
While the importance of wide area measurement system (WAMS) consisting of phasor measurement units (PMUs) is recognized, there are still unidentified applications that can be addressed with the advance of technology. Traditionally, power system operators diagnosed the fault point through the status of protective relays and circuit breakers of the protection system. In large blackouts, however, the malfunction of protection system has itself often been among the suspects of the disaster. This paper proposes an alternative fault diagnosis approach independent of the function of protection system, utilizing PMU data and bus impedance matrix (Zbus). First, the proposed method diagnoses the fault...

    Abstract
Spinning reserve (SR) is one of the most important ancillary services which are needed for satisfying reliability requirements, including the desired level of security in power systems. By definition, spinning reserve is the unloaded section of synchronized generation that is able to respond immediately to serve load. This paper proposes a hybrid DCOPF and harmony search (HS) optimization method as a novel heuristic approach to the joint dispatch of energy and reserve considering the bottling of reserve due to transmission limits. The effectiveness of the proposed method is examined by applying it to the IEEE 30-bus test system. The results obtained using the proposed method are presented...

    Abstract
This Paper presents a model for optimal locating and sizing of Distributed Generation (DG) for congestion management in deregulated electricity market. For reducing the solution space a priority list of candidate buses is formed and then optimal placement and sizing of DG in potential buses is discussed. In order to incorporate stochastic nature of power system in this study, Monte-Carlo method is used to simulate the effect of uncertainty of loads and system on the optimal location and size of the DGs in the network. The proposed method is applied to IEEE Reliability Test System (RTS). The impacts of load uncertainty on optimum DG size and location are studied

    Abstract
The objective of the dynamic economic dispatch (DED) problem is to schedule power generation for the online units for a given time horizon economically, satisfying various operational constraints. Due to the effect of valve-point effects and prohibited operating zones (POZs) in the generating units cost functions, DED problem is a highly non-linear and non-convex optimization problem. The DED problem even may be more complicated if transmission losses and ramp-rate constraints are taken into account. This paper presents a novel and heuristic algorithm to solve DED problem of generating units, by employing time varying acceleration coefficients iteration particle swarm optimization...

Strategy deviation index as a new reactive market power indicator

    , Article IET Conference Publications, 7 November 2010 through 10 November 2010, Agia Napa ; Volume 2010, Issue 572 CP , 2010 ; 9781849193191 (ISBN) Rahmat Samii, R ; Nourizadeh, S ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Reactive market power assessment is an important issue for ISOs and the regulators of the reactive power market. Due to the localized characteristics of reactive power as a technical support and its monopsonistic nature as an economic commodity, a vivid reactive market power index including market share, demand side and cost is not achieved yet. In this paper, a new reactive market power index is presented which is based on bidding strategy deviation of the GENCOs after establishing a uniform price auction reactive market. Not knowing others' offers to ISO, each unit faces a bidding strategy problem that is solved using game theory. Considering its production costs, the unit uses the...

Stochastic unit commitment of wind farms integrated in power system

    , Article Electric Power Systems Research ; Volume 80, Issue 9 , Jan , 2010 , Pages 1006-1017 ; 03787796 (ISSN) Siahkali, H ; Vakilian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Integration of wind power generation creates new concerns for operation engineers in a power system. Unlike conventional power generation sources, wind power generators supply intermittent power due to uncertainty in parameters of wind such as its velocity. This paper presents probabilistic model for load and wind power uncertainty which can be used in operation planning (with durations up to one or two years). A stochastic model is proposed to simulate the status of units that are directly affected by the load and wind power generation uncertainties. This paper develops a solution method for generation scheduling of power system, while taking into account the stochastic behavior of the load...

Stochastic security constrained unit commitment incorporating demand side reserve

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 56 , March , 2014 , Pages 175-184 ; ISSN: 01420615 Sahebi, M. M. R ; Hosseini, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Increasing the social welfare and achieving real competitive markets are the main purposes of consumers participation in electricity markets. Hence, Demand Response Programs (DRPs) have been designed to consider the consumers participation. One of these programs named Emergency Demand Response Program (EDRP) is based on consumers' responses to high electricity prices and to the incentives that are paid by Independent System Operators (ISOs) in the critical hours. In this paper, a model has been proposed for EDRP participation in the Stochastic Security Constrained Unit Commitment (SCUC) program. Both the spinning reserve and the demand side reserve, which is modeled as EDRP, are taken into...

Stochastic network constrained payment minimisation in electricity markets

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 13, Issue 11 , 2019 , Pages 2268-2279 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Nouri, A ; Hosseini, S. H ; Keane, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This study presents a novel framework to incorporate the uncertainties associated with load fluctuations and components' availability in a day-ahead joint energy-reserve payment cost minimisation (PCM). The payments are calculated based on locational marginal prices (LMPs). Considering these uncertainties, appropriate definitions are not available for energy and reserve LMPs (RLMPs) that suit the probabilistic PCM formulation and reflect the market characteristics. A tri-level optimisation framework is proposed. The optimisation variables in the first-level optimisation include commitment status. In the second-level optimisation, the production schedule and allocated reserves are the...

Stochastic multi-stage model for co-planning of transmission system and merchant distributed energy resources

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 13, Issue 14 , 2019 , Pages 3003-3010 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Ranjbar, H ; Hosseini, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In recent years, while energy consumption is still increasing, system peak load is decreasing due to deregulation in power systems, application of demand response programmes, microgrids and smart grids implementation, and so on. Thus, transmission system operators (TSOs), which are usually a public entity, must reinforce the transmission systems to maintain power system reliability. They are not interested in investing transmission network because of high investment costs. In this regard, this study presents a new bi-level model for co-planning of transmission system and merchant distributed energy resources (DERs). The upper level takes the TSOs perspective and aims to minimise the line...

Simultanous emergency demand response programming and unit commitment programming in comparison with interruptible load contracts

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 6, Issue 7 , 2012 , Pages 605-611 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Sahebi, M. M ; Duki, E. A ; Kia, M ; Soroudi, A ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Different reasons such as power system restructuring, electricity price variation in some hours of a day and growth in the fuel price, have led to more attention to demand response (DR) programmes for consumers. Two important issues in DR programmes are emergency demand response programming (EDRP) and Interruptible/Curtail able (I/C) programme that is utilised as interruptible load contracts (ILC). The EDDR is utilised to decrease the consumption in peak load or critical hours of the day. This occurs by means of customer's behaviour in response to the incentives. However, the curtailment of voluntarily loads in the critical hours considering the consumer requirements is an action that can be...

Role of fiber arrangements in operation of a double-fiber opto-mechanical system

    , Article Journal of Applied Sciences ; Volume 11, Issue 16 , 2011 , Pages 3001-3007 ; 18125654 (ISSN) Entezari, E ; Golnabi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Determination of the surface structure using the light reflection is an important issue. The aim is to study such surface reflections using an opto-mechanical system. The effects of the fiber arrangements in the operation of an opto-pair probe system for surface profiling are described. The opto-mechanical testing system consists of a double-fiber optical probe design and an electro-mechanical scanning system. Reflection signals for the plane and cylindrical surfaces made with different curvatures and materials are investigated with both probes and the results are compared. The reflection signal for the plane surface is independent of the double-fiber orientation in probe but for the curves...

Robust fault location of transmission lines by synchronised and unsynchronised wide-area current measurements

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 8, Issue 9 , 1 September , 2014 , Pages 1561-1571 ; ISSN: 17518687 Salehi-Dobakhshari, A ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This study presents a novel method for fault location of transmission lines by multiple fault current measurements. In contrast to conventional methods, it is proposed to utilise several current measurements, which may be far from the faulted line. The circuit equations of the network are used to express each fault current as a function of fault location. Fault location is then estimated using a least-squares estimation technique. To achieve a robust estimation of fault location, statistical hypotheses-testing is employed for identifying erroneous measurements. The method is applicable to both synchronised and unsynchronised measurements. Moreover, fault location can be estimated regardless...

    Abstract
Secure operation of protective intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) has been recognized as a crucial issue for power grids. By gaining access to substation IEDs, intruders can severely disrupt the operation of protection systems. This paper develops an analytical reliability assessment framework for quantifying the impacts of the hypothesized integrity attacks against protection systems. Petri net models are used to simulate possible intrusion scenarios into substation networks. The cyber network model is constructed from firewall, intrusion prevention system (IPS), and password models, which are three types of defense mechanisms for protecting substation networks. In this paper, two main...

Reliability-constrained unit commitment using stochastic mixed-integer programming

    , Article 2010 IEEE 11th International Conference on Probabilistic Methods Applied to Power Systems, PMAPS 2010 ; 2010 , p. 200-205 ; ISBN: 9781420000000 Parvania, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Abiri-Jahromi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper proposes a stochastic mixed-integer programming (SMIP) model for the reliability-constrained unit commitment (RCUC) problem. The major objective of the paper is to examine both features of accuracy and efficiency of the proposed SMIP model of RCUC. The spinning reserve of generating units is considered as the only available reserve provision resource; however, the proposed formulation can be readily extended to comprise the other kind of reserve facilities. Expected load not served (ELNS) and loss of load probability (LOLP) are accommodated as the reliability constraints. Binding either or both reliability indices ensures the security of operation incorporating the stochastic...
