, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moniri Piri, Mohammad (Author) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Atherosclerosis, due to the penetration of low-density lipoprotein particles (LDL) into the arterial wall, is one of the most common and death-leading diseases in today's world. Due to its importance, extensive research has been conducted on the factors that affect this disease. In this thesis, a numerical study of the effects of Wall Shear Stress (WSS), non-Newtonian behavior of blood, different hematocrit values, and blood pressure on LDL permeation through the artery wall layers are investigated in a 4-layer wall model of a coronary bifurcation. To obtain the velocity and concentration fields in the domain, momentum, Brinkman, and mass transport equations are solved in the lumen and wall...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Maleki Tehrani , Mahdi (Author) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dense underflows are continuous currents, caused by interaction of two or more fluids of different density. Density currents move down-slope due their density being heavier than that of the ambient water. In this work, entrainment in 3-D density currents in a straight channel was investigated by a set of experimental studies and Theoretical calculations. Velocity components were measured using Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV). First of all, the bed shear stress was calculated by the velocity profile method and Reynolds stress method as well and showed a good agreement. By increasing the Richardson number, the bed shear stress decreases. On the other hand, the interface shear stress was...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi, Hamed (Author) ; Sayadi, Hassan (Supervisor) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor) ; Navabi Shirazi, Mohammad Ali (Co-Supervisor) ; Malakan Rad, Elaheh (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Patients with a single ventricle disease who have undergone Fontan surgery have always had long-term complications. These complications include pulmonary artery stiffness and decreased ability to exercise. In fact, due to removal of the right ventricle from the circulatory system, blood pressure and pulsatility inflow to total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) are reduced following this surgery. Creating waves (radial displacement) on the IVC (Inferior Vena Cava) wall can increase pulmonary flow pulsations. The Objective of this study is to test the effect of induced wave amplitude on the pulmonary flow pulsations at the rest condition. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations were...

Investigation of Two-Fluid Flow Contains Oil and Water in Hydrocyclones

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Maddahian, Reza (Author) ; Farhanieh, Bijan (Supervisor) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Having an efficient and reliable system for oil-water separation especially in offshore oil and gas industry is of crucial importance. Due to the platform movement, space, weight and operating limitations in offshore industries, using common methods, (e.g. gravity based vessels), for oil-water separation is ineffective. On the other hand, producing oil on offshore platforms is often accompanied by large discharge of oil-contaminated water into the sea, resulting in environmental pollution. Therefore a need for high efficiency compact separators capable of operation in various operating conditions arises. One solution to the mentioned problem is the use of hydrocyclone separators. The...

Numerical Modeling of Treatment of Liver Tissue Cancer by Using High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (Hifu)

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mohammadpour Ghadikolaie, Maryam (Author) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, the incidence rate of liver cancer has increased sharply and nowadays liver cancer is known as the second leading cause of cancer death in the world. Surgical resection is usually used to treat malignant hepatic tumors. However, in some cases, surgical resection is not possible because of some reasons, such as tumor size and location. In these cases, other minimally invasive ablation methods such as radio-frequency ablation, microwave ablation, and high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) can be used. HIFU has some advantages such as noninvasiveness, high penetration depth, and low cost in comparison to the other ablation techniques such as radiofrequency ablation. In HIFU...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Lak, Behzad (Author) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor) ; Afshin, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Sedimentation tanks are one of the important and costly stages of water treatment process in which remained particles from previous stages settle down due to gravity force. In this research, the hydrodynamics of secondary settling tanks without and in the presence of particles is numerically investigated using VOF method in order to simulate the interphase using RNG k-ε for turbulence modelling. The simulations are performed by means of open-source code OpenFoam, and the code is developed to model particles in the flow. The calculated velocity profiles using VOF method show a reasonable agreement with the experimental data. Comparing the concentration profiles with experiments shows the...

Generating a Pulsatile Pulmonary Flow after Fontan Operation by Means of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghoreyshi, Mostafa (Author) ; Saidi, Mohamad Said (Supervisor) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor) ; Navaee Shirazei, Mohammad Ali (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
This study considers blood flow in total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) morphology, which is created in Fontan surgical procedure in patients with single ventricle heart disease. Ordinary process of TCPC operation reduces the pulmonary blood flow pulsatility; because of right ventricle being bypassed. This phenomenon causes a lot of side effects for patients. A cardiac surgeon has suggested that keeping main pulmonary artery (MPA) partially open, would increase pulmonary flow pulsations. MPA gets closed in ordinary TCPC operation. The purpose of current study is to verify the effects of keeping MPA partially open on pulmonary flow pulsations, by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD)....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghasemi Varnamkhasti, Amir (Author) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Flows which density difference in a gravity field is their driven force are called Density Currents. Such flows are present in both nature and man made environments. Due to their importance, there have been large efforts to analyse them in both experimental and numerical way. In the present thesis, Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is introduced as a new tool to simulate such flows. As the method is Lagrangian and particle based, simulation of Density Currents with particles can be addressed more naturally that can be accounted as the method preference to traditional mesh based methods. SPH projection method is incorporated to impose incompressibility. To precisely simulate Density...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fahim Alavi, Morteza (Author) ; Afshin, Hossein (Supervisor) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Mass transfer of a drop moving in a bulk fluid is an interesting subject which has attracted a lot of attention. Understanding effective parameters in this process would be helpful in order to increase the efficiency of the industrial processes related to mass transfer. In this research, the deformation and mas transfer of a moving drop was studied numerically. Navier-Stokes equations and concentration equation were solved separately with a VOF method in an axisymmetric domain using Fluent software. Comparision between numerical results and former experimental results proves the accuracy of the modelling in both fields of deformation and mass transfer. Moreover, effects of the physical...

Experimental Investigation of the Effect of Inlet Concentration and Obstacle Height on The Structure and Depositional Behavior of Turbidity Currents

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farizan, Ahmad Reza (Author) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor) ; Afshin, Hossein (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Gravity currents are a general class of flows in which the density difference between two fluids drives the flow. Turbidity currents are gravity currents in which the density difference is due to suspended sediment. Reservoir sedimentation is mainly occurs because of sediment transport by these currents. If turbidity currents can be stopped in a reservoir, or influenced in such a way that the sediments are not deposited in critical locations like bottom outlets, the storage capacity of the reservoirs can be increased considerably. In order to do this, various methods such as placing an obstacle in the path of these flows have been proposed. In this study, the effect of inlet sediment...

Effects of Heart Dynamic Motion on Blood Hemodynamics and LDL Accumulation in Coronary Bifurcation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Olyaei, Mostafa (Author) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, the effect of heart dynamic motion and pulsatile inflow on blood hemodynamics and LDL permeation into the arterial wall in a 3-D coronary artery bifurcation was investigated. To determine the effect of each factor alone and simultaneous effect of both factors i.e. heart dynamic motion and pulsatile inflow, flow simulations were performed in four cases i.e. steady-static, steady-dynamic, pulsatile-static, and pulsatile-dynamic. The results of flow simulations showed that dynamic geometry and pulsatile inflow have considerable impact on temporal variations of wall shear stress (WSS), even though the effect of pulsatile inflow on WSS variation dominates over the effect of...

Simulation of Competitive Flow in the Coronary Arteries Bypass

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Azimi Nejad, Milad (Author) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Atherosclerosis is one of the most important factors for mortality and morbidity in the world. Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is applied for treatment of this disease which in this surgery, the patient vessels, such as internal thoracic artery and saphenous vein, are harvested and grafted to the coronary arteries. The graft success and its performance in short and long-term are depended on the much factors e.g. the severity of stenosis in the coronary artery. It should be noted that the low level of stenosis in the coronary artery causes the creation of undesirable phenomenon of competitive flow in the grafts after the surgery which this phenomenon has been reported as a cause of graft...

Experimental Study on Behavior of Turbidity Currents with Obstacle

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Oshaghi, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Afshin, Hossein (Supervisor) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Turbidity currents are produced when a particle laden fluid flows under the lighter ambient fresh fluid. The streaming of particle laden fluid is called turbidity current and this kind of currents is the major mechanism for sediment transportations in lakes and oceans. In the present research, the main concentration is on the effect of obstacle on the behavior of turbidity current. A series of laboratory experiments were carried out with various obstacle heights, shapes and different inlet densimetric Froude numbers. In each experiment, velocity profiles upstream and downstream of the obstacle were measured, using an ADV (Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter). Kaolin was used as the suspended...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abbaszadeh, Shahabaddin (Author) ; Firoozabadi , Bahar (Supervisor) ; Afshin, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Density currents as a particular form of stratified fluid motion in nature have attracted the interest of many researchers in the past decades. These flows are formed whenever a fluid with specific density begins to move through another fluid with different density called ambient fluid. Prediction of propagation of turbulent density currents, especially because of their remarkable influence on the environment, is one of the researcher’s interests in geophysics and engineering. Density currents have a lot of applications in industry and nature. Sand storm in deserts, turbidity currents in oceans and avalanches are natural examples and leakage of dense gas into the atmosphere due to reservoir...

Numerical Fluid–Structure Interaction and non-Newtonian Simulation of Blood Flow in a Compliant Carotid Bifurcation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Toloui, Mostafa (Author) ; Firoozabadi, Bahar (Supervisor) ; Saidi, Mohammad Saeid (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Researchers have done a lot of studies about the use of CFS in blood flow modeling in order to improve the supplementary devices or find mechanical factors which cause artery to be diseased. Blood is a complex rheological fluid, blood flow is a pulastile flow, and blood flow field interacts with the deformable vessel wall. Thus, blood flow modeling like other biological phenomena has its own complexities such as anisotropy, vsicoelasticity, and nonlinearity in stress-strain relationship of vessel wall. To explore the role of hemodynamics in the initiation and progression of stenosis in carotid artery bifurcation, a 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique is applied. The effect of...
