    Abstract
    Researchers are faced with huge challenges when undertaking BME research projects in developing countries. Various administrative, technical, economic and even cultural barriers have to be overcome whereas the quality and quantity of the output has to be comparable with the developed world in order to make results publishable. This paper uses a real project context to highlight the major problems and the necessity of a holistic approach which would take into consideration all stakeholders interests. It is only by tackling problems such as relationship between academia-industry and administration efficiency at their root that significant progress can be achieved

    Drug administration using infusion pumps can find application in treating patients with arrhythmias.     A modular hierarchical structure is developed to describe human movement planning level. The modular feature of the proposed model enables it to generalize planning a task. The movements are planned based on decomposing a task into its corresponding subtasks (motion phases). There is a module responsible for one condition. The final plan is constructed using soft computing of the plans proposed by different modules. Each module estimates the kinematics of the joints at the end of each subtask; we call them kinematic estimator modules (KEMs).     Abstract
    We proposed a model to investigate the transient diffusion of drug (sulphate) into the intervertebral disc. Using finite element method, drug diffusion was simulated and the concentration of diffused drug in each region of disc including Nucleus pulpous (NP), Inner annulus fibroses (IA), and Outer annulus fibroses (OA) was measured. In addition, to investigate the role of CEP permeability on the amount of diffused drug, model was simulated with different cartilage endplate (CEP) permeability.     Abstract
    In this Paper a new approach is proposed for electrocardiogram (ECG) based human identification using wavelet distance measurement. The main advantage of this method is that it guarantees high accuracy even in abnormal cases. Furthermore, it possesses low sensitivity to noise. The algorithm was applied on 11 normal subjects and 10 abnormal subjects of MIT-BIH Database using single lead data, and a 100% human identification rate was on both normal and abnormal subjects. Adding artificial white noise to signals shows that the method is nearly accurate in SNR level above 5dB in normal subjects and 20dB in abnormal subjects

    Abstract
    Estimation of muscle force is needed for monitoring or control purposes in many studies and applications that include direct human involvement such as control of prosthetic arms and human-robot interaction. A new model is introduced to estimate the force of muscle from the EMG signals. Estimation is based on Hammerstein-Wiener Model which consists of three blocks. These blocks are used to describe the nonlinearity of input and output and linear behavior of the model. The nonlinear network is designed base on the sigmoid network.     Abstract
    In this paper, a new technique based on nonlinear resonance of microbubbles is investigated in order to estimate the amplitude of an ultrasound wave pressure field. First, the existing theoretical model is reviewed. Then, an experimental setup consisting of a bubble generator and transmitting/receiving ultrasound transducers operating in the 1 MHz frequency range is described. The effect of background noise is also taken into account. Results show that the second harmonic oscillations are detectable, paving the way to develop a quantitative method for in vivo calibration of ultrasound waves

    The most prevalent musculoskeletal condition and one of the most disabilities are caused by low back pain. In the low back pain, a large variety of evaluation tools is presented to assess the results of the treatment; therefore, it is important to measure the trunk angle in order to determine the progress during patient's treatment.     Sleep spindle is the hallmark of second stage of sleep in human being, which is defined as a rhythmic sequence with waxing and waning waves, whose frequency is approximately between 8 to 14 Hz, and its time duration is between 0.5 to 2 seconds. Bump modeling is a method for extracting regions with higher amounts of energy in a related time-frequency map. The bump model of the sleep spindle consists of a group of high energy bumps concentrating in approximately 8 to 14 Hz frequency band.     Flow mediated dilation (FMD) measurement using ultrasound imaging (FMD-US) has been established as a standard method for assessing the endothelial function. Recently, a less skilled-operator demanding method has been proposed based on the photoplethysmogram (PPG) changes during reactive hyperemia. It was shown that the amplitude of the PPG pulse (FMD-PPG) changed in a quite similar manner to that of the artery diameter in the method of the FMD-US i.e. increases following releasing the cuff and then gradually returns to baseline.     Abstract
    This paper uses singular value decomposition (SVD) for studying the dynamic properties of fatigue-loaded intervertebral disc. Previously, this problem had been addressed using mathematical models of using mass, spring and damper or based on poroelastic theory.     Assessment of respiratory volume is widely used in clinical application in order to assess the case of respiratory illness, and the progression of the respiratory syndrome. Respiratory plethysmography is used to determine the changes of chest volume to monitor the breathing.     Abstract
    Sleep Spindle is the hallmark of the second stage of sleep in EEG signal. It had been analyzed using different methods, including Fourier transform, parametric and non-parametric models, higher order statistics and spectra, and also time-frequency methods such as wavelet transform, and matching pursuit. In this study, bump modeling has been used to analyze sleep spindle. Bump modeling is a method which represents the time-frequency map of signals with a number of elementary functions. Results of this work demonstrate that bump modeling is capable of analyzing different sleep spindle patterns in sleep EEG signals successfully

    Abstract
    Inferior temporal (IT) cortex is the most important part of the brain and plays an important role in response to visual stimuli. In this study, object decoding has been performed using neuron spikes in IT cortex region. Single Unit Activity (SUA) was recorded from 123 neurons in IT cortex. Pseudo-population firing rate vectors were created, then dimension reduction was done and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was used for object decoding. Object decoding accuracy was calculated for various window lengths from 50 ms to 200 ms and various window steps from 25 ms to 100 ms. The results show that 150 ms length and 50 ms window step size gives an optimum performance in average accuracy
