    Abstract
During recent years centrifugal-based microfluidic devices known as Lab-on-a-CD have attracted a lot of attentions. Applications of these CD-based platforms are ubiquitous in numerous biological analyses and chemical syntheses. Mixing of different species in microscale is one of the essential operations in biochemical applications where this seemingly simple task remains a major obstruction. Application of centrifugal force, however, may significantly improve the flow agitation and mixing, especially when it is combined with the Coriolis force which acts perpendicular to centrifugal force. In this study, mixing process in minichambers located on a rotating platform under a periodic...

    Abstract
The Possibility of the laser assisted sonofusion is studied via single bubble sonoluminescence (SBSL) in Deuterated acetone (C3D6O) using quasi-adiabatic and hydro-chemical simulations at the ambient temperatures of 0 and -28.5 °C. The interior temperature of the produced bubbles in Deuterated acetone is 1.6 × 106 K in hydro-chemical model and it is reached up to 1.9 × 106 K in the laser induced SBSL bubbles. Under these circumstances, temperature up to 107 K can be produced in the center of the bubble in which the thermonuclear D-D fusion reactions are promising under the controlled conditions. © 2016 Author(s)

    , Article 2017 24th Iranian Conference on Biomedical Engineering and 2017 2nd International Iranian Conference on Biomedical Engineering, ICBME 2017, 30 November 2017 through 1 December 2017 ; 2018 ; 9781538636091 (ISBN) Karami, M ; Grasa, J ; Calvo, B ; Zohoor, H ; Firoozbakhsh, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Active behavior in skeletal muscle soft tissue is affected by electrical, chemical and mechanical parameters. More realistic model of skeletal muscle demands detailed formulation which is able to involve other parameters in addition to mechanical ones. In this paper a new formulation for considering Ca2+ level (as the most important chemical factor) along with mechanical parameters in force producing process of skeletal muscle is introduced and validated comparing simulated results with some experimental data. Prepared skeletal muscle behavior is able to predict the maximum generated force in muscle according to the concentration of intracellular Ca2+ level and muscle contraction velocity...

    Abstract
The anomeric carbon chemical shifts of α-, β- and γ-cyclodextrin in solution were studied experimentally and theoretically by NMR and two-layer ONIOM2 (B3LYP/6-31G*-GIAO: HF/6-31G*-GIAO) variant. The dependence between the anomeric carbon chemical shift and the glycosidic bond φ and ψ dihedral angles in d-Glcp-d-Glcp disaccharides with and (1 → 4) linkages in α-configurations were computed by Gauge-Including Atomic Orbital (GIAO) ab initio and ONIOM in water solvent using PCM methods. Complete chemical shift surfaces versus φ and ψ for this disaccharide were computed. We also present empirical formulas of the form 13C δ = f(φ, ψ) obtained by fitting the ab initio data to trigonometric series...

    Stretching an anisotropic DNA

    , Article Journal of Chemical Physics ; Volume 128, Issue 12 , 2008 ; 00219606 (ISSN) Eslami Mossallam, B ; Ejtehadi, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We present a perturbation theory to find the response of an anisotropic DNA to the external tension. It is shown that the anisotropy has a nonzero but small contribution to the force-extension curve of the DNA. Thus an anisotropic DNA behaves like an isotropic one with an effective bending constant equal to the harmonic average of its soft and hard bending constants. © 2008 American Institute of Physics

    Abstract
Multiphase impeller stirred tank reactors enhance mixing of reacting species used in a variety of chemical industries. Gas-liquid mixing and mass transfer between these phases is an important application in reactor design. One such an example is hydrogenation reaction of aqueous NDMA (Nitroso dimethyl amine) solution in which one of the parameters having a significant effect on the reaction rate is mass transfer. This parameter in turn is a function of impeller shape and rotational speed, gas flow rate and reactor scale. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a useful tool in the analysis, design and scale up of stirred tank reactors via investigating hydrodynamics of gas and liquid flow,...

    Abstract
Benzopyrans, or chromenes, are widespread in nature and are considered to be a privileged scaffold in medicinal chemistry. Herein, we report the first organocatalyzed asymmetric synthesis of chiral benzopyrans. The benzopyran unit is constructed through a domino reaction involving an oxa-Michael attack of salicylic aldehyde derivatives onto α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, activated through iminium-ion formation with the organocatalyst, followed by an intramolecular aldol reaction and subsequent elimination of water. This overall reaction sequence provides benzopyrans with aromatic C-2 substituents in up to 60% yield and 60% enantioselectivity, while C-2 aliphatic analogues can be obtained in 90%...

    Abstract
The effect of up velocity and influent COD concentration on the activity of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in UASB reactors is discussed. To study these effects, four UASB reactors were built and utilized in parallel. Examinations were carried out in two different concentrations of molasses (500 mg COD/l and 1000 mg COD/l) and four different upward flow velocities. It was observed that at velocities greater than 1 m/h, SRB bacteria were easily washed out from the reactors due to lower density and lack of ability to form dense and firm granules. It was found that in low-strength wastewaters with a COD to sulphate ratio of 2, an upward velocity in the range of 1.5-2.5 m/h could be...
