    Abstract
In this study, factors affecting the noise generation by instability waves in a subsonic jet with acoustic Mach number of 0.5 are investigated using linear stability analysis. The base flow required for instability analysis is obtained by modeling the jet stream based on the k-ϵ turbulence model and using the empirical coefficients suggested by Thies and Tam [1]. The resulting base flow profiles are used to solve the linear instability equation, which governs the pressure perturbation for obtaining the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. The results of linear instability analysis for phase and amplitude of pressure fluctuations are compared against the existing experimental data, which...

Inverse vibration problem for un-damped 3-dimensional multi-story shear building models

    , Article Journal of Sound and Vibration ; Volume 333, Issue 1 , 6 January , 2014 , Pages 99-113 ; ISSN: 0022460X Dolatshahi, K. M ; Rofooei, F. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Various researchers have contributed to the identification of the mass and stiffness matrices of two dimensional (2-D) shear building structural models for a given set of vibratory frequencies. The suggested methods are based on the specific characteristics of the Jacobi matrices, i.e., symmetric, tri-diagonal and semi-positive definite matrices. However, in case of three dimensional (3-D) structural models, those methods are no longer applicable, since their stiffness matrices are not tri-diagonal. In this paper the inverse problem for a special class of vibratory structural systems, i.e., 3-D shear building models, is investigated. A practical algorithm is proposed for solving the inverse...

Intrinsic expressions for arbitrary stress tensors conjugate to general strain tensors

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 14, Issue 5 , 2007 , Pages 486-493 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Sohrabpour, S ; Naghdabadi, R ; Asghari, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a unified explicit tensorial relation is sought between two stress tensors conjugate to arbitrary and general Hill strains. The approach used for deriving the tensorial relation is based on the eigenprojection method. The result is, indeed, a generalization of the relations that were derived by Farahani and Naghadabadi [1] in 2003 from a component to intrinsic form. The result is unified in the sense that it is valid for all cases of distinct and coalescent principal stretches. Also, in the case of three dimensional Euclidean inner product space, using the derived unified relation, some expressions for the conjugate stress tensors are presented. © Sharif University of...

Interaction of the dynamics of doubly fed wind generators with power system electromechanical oscillations

    , Article IET Renewable Power Generation ; Volume 7, Issue 2 , March , 2013 , Pages 89-97 ; 17521416 (ISSN) Jafarian, M ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
The interaction of the dynamics of doubly fed wind generators with the electromechanical mode of nearby synchronous generators (SGs) can affect the small signal stability of power systems with high penetration levels of wind power. In this study, a novel approach is developed to investigate these interactions and their impact on the damping of power system oscillations. In this approach it is not necessary to model the dynamic behaviour of system SGs and only the frequencies of system oscillations are important. This approach is based on the sensitivity of SGs electromechanical eigenvalue with respect to variations in the Jacobian matrix of power system. By applying this approach to a test...

Influence of model simplifications and parameters on dynamic performance of grid connected fixed speed wind turbines

    , Article 19th International Conference on Electrical Machines, ICEM 2010, 6 September 2010 through 8 September 2010, Rome ; 2010 ; 9781424441754 (ISBN) Tohidi, S ; Rabiee, A ; Parniani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
With the rising penetration of wind power into electric power systems, more accurate and comprehensive studies are required to identify the interaction between wind farm(s) and power system. This requires accurate models of different types of wind turbine-generators. This paper describes modeling and small signal analysis of a grid connected fixed speed wind turbine generator (FSWTG). A complete model of FSWTG is derived and some reduced-order models are deduced. Eigenvalues and participation factors of the system for these models are calculated. Then, using the eigen analysis results, the models are compared and the simplifying assumptions which have been considered in the literatures are...

Ictal EEG signal denoising by combination of a semi-blind source separation method and multiscale PCA

    , Article 2016 23rd Iranian Conference on Biomedical Engineering and 2016 1st International Iranian Conference on Biomedical Engineering, ICBME 2016, 23 November 2016 through 25 November 2016 ; 2017 , Pages 226-231 ; 9781509034529 (ISBN) Pouranbarani, E ; Hajipour Sardoubie, S ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Contamination of ictal Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals by muscle artifacts is one of the critical issues related to clinically diagnosing seizure. Over the past decade, several methods have been proposed in time, frequency and time-frequency domain to accurately isolate ictal EEG activities from artifacts. Among denoising approaches Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) and Independent Component Analysis (ICA) are widely used. Denoising based on Generalized EigenValue Decomposition (GEVD) is one of the Semi-Blind Source Separation (SBSS) methods which has been recently proposed. In the GEVD-based method, a couple of time-frequency covariance matrices are used. These time-frequency (TF)...

    Abstract
The energy of a graph G, E(G), is the sum of absolute values of the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. This concept was extended by Nikiforov to arbitrary complex matrices. Recall that the trace norm of a digraph D is defined as, N(D)=∑i=1nσi, where σ1≥⋯≥σn are the singular values of the adjacency matrix of D. In this paper we would like to present some lower and upper bounds for N(D). For any digraph D it is proved that N(D)≥rank(D) and the equality holds if and only if D is a disjoint union of directed cycles and directed paths. Finally, we present a lower bound on σ1 and N(D) in terms of the size of digraph D. © 2021 Elsevier Inc

    Abstract
Pentamode metamaterials are a type of extremal designer metamaterials, which are able to demonstrate extremely high rigidity in one direction and extremely high compliance in other directions. Pentamodes can, therefore, be considered as building blocks of exotic materials with any arbitrarily selected thermodynamically admissible elasticity tensor. The pentamode lattices can then be envisioned to be combined to construct intermediate extremal materials, such as quadramodes, trimodes, and bimodes. In this study, we constructed several primary types of anisotropic pentamode lattices (with midpoint positioning of 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, and 42% of the main unit cell diagonal) and then...

    Abstract
Shape analysis plays an important role in many medical imaging studies. One of the recent shape analysis methods uses the Laplace Beltrami operator which is also used in this paper for hippocampal shape comparison. We proposed a feature vector which consists of size measures and shape descriptors based on Laplace Beltrami eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. The aforementioned feature space is utilised for automatic differentiating normal subjects from epileptic patients as well as distinguishing epileptic patients with left temporal lobe epilepsy (LTLE) from patients with right temporal lobe epilepsy (RTLE). Achieved results are diagnostic accuracy of 93% with 95% sensitivity and lateralization...

    Abstract
Shape analysis plays an important role in many medical imaging studies. One of the recent shape analysis methods uses the Laplace Beltrami eigenvalues which is also used in this paper for global shape comparison of hippocampus of normal subjects and epileptic patients. Popularity of the Laplace Beltrami operator in this field is due to its isometry-invariance which avoids pre-processing steps like mapping, registration, and alignment. In addition, it is capable of revealing fine details in shapes that makes this method a good choice for deformation detecting purposes like epilepsy diagnosis. To examine capability of the proposed method, statistical analysis and two ways of classification,...

Highly accurate and east convergent diffractive interface theory for fast analysis of metasurfaces

    Abstract
Recently, an approximate formalism [Opt. Express 23, 2764, (2015)] called diffractive interface theory has been reported for the fast analysis of the optical response of metasurfaces, subwavelength two-dimensional periodic arrays. In this method, the electromagnetic boundary conditions are derived using the susceptibility distribution of the metasurface, such that the analysis of metasurface is possible without solving any eigenvalue equation inside the grating layer. In this paper, we modify the boundary conditions to achieve more accurate results. In addition, in this paper, correct Fourier factorization rules are also applied leading to faster convergence rate. The obtained results are...

Hermite polynomial expansion for analysis of electromagnetic slow waves in coupled nano conducting layer with Gaussian profile

    , Article LAPC 2007: 3rd Loughborough Antennas and Propagation Conference, Loughborough, 2 April 2007 through 3 April 2007 ; 2007 , Pages 265-268 ; 1424407761 (ISBN); 9781424407767 (ISBN) Sarrafi, P ; Mehrany, K ; Rashidian, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
The possibility of electromagnetic slow wave propagation in dielectric slab waveguides, when free two-dimensional interface charge layers are generated at film-substrate and film-cover interfaces, is already explored. In this paper, the propagation of electromagnetic slow waves supported by induced charge layers of nonzero thickness, whose induced charge densities have Gaussian profiles, is investigated for the first time. In order to analyze the effects of inhomogeneity in the conductivity profile, the electric field is expanded in terms of Hermite polynomials and each eigenmode is sought in the complete space spanned by them. © 2007 IEEE

    Abstract
In this paper, we derive some necessary spectral conditions for the existence of graph homomorphisms in which we also consider some parameters related to the corresponding eigenspaces such as nodal domains. In this approach, we consider the combinatorial Laplacian and co-Laplacian as well as the adjacency matrix. Also, we present some applications in graph decompositions where we prove a general version of Fisher's inequality for G-designs. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

Graetz problem extended to mixed electroosmotically and pressure-driven flow

    , Article Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer ; Volume 26, Issue 1 , 2012 , Pages 123-133 ; 08878722 (ISSN) Sadeghi, A ; Veisi, H ; Saidi, M. H ; Chakraborty, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Thermally developing mixed electroosmotically and pressure-driven flow in a parallel plate microchannel with a step change in wall temperature is considered in the framework of an extended Graetz problem. Both Joule heating and viscous dissipation effects are taken into consideration. Expressions for the dimensionless temperature and Nusselt number in the form of infinite series are presented. In general, the associated eigenvalue problem is solved numerically. Nevertheless, an analytical solution is also presented for axial locations close to the entrance. Comparisons are made between the present results and those obtained by approximating the electroosmotic velocity with the...

    Abstract
In our previous report (J. Phys. Org. Chem., 2017), we discussed the dual behavior of gold nanocluster (Au3 NC), where it scavenged reactive oxygen species (ROS) while promoted their generation to a lesser extent. Continuing this quest, we investigate the effects of Au3 NC on common reactive nitrogen species (RNS: O=N˙ and O=N-O) and their precursors (O=N-H and O=N-O-H, respectively), at B3LYP/LACVP+* level of theory. We compare the results with those of prevalent ROS (H-O˙ and H-O-O˙) and their precursors (H-O-H and H-O-O-H, respectively). To this end, various parameters are probed such as binding energy (Eb), bond dissociation energy (BDE), bond lengths, Mullikan spin density (MSD),...

Geometrical influence of a deposited particle on the performance of bridged carbon nanotube-based mass detectors

    , Article Physica E: Low-Dimensional Systems and Nanostructures ; Volume 94 , 2017 , Pages 31-46 ; 13869477 (ISSN) Ali Akbari, H. R ; Ceballes, S ; Abdelkefi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A nonlocal continuum-based model is derived to simulate the dynamic behavior of bridged carbon nanotube-based nano-scale mass detectors. The carbon nanotube (CNT) is modeled as an elastic Euler-Bernoulli beam considering von-Kármán type geometric nonlinearity. In order to achieve better accuracy in characterization of the CNTs, the geometrical properties of an attached nano-scale particle are introduced into the model by its moment of inertia with respect to the central axis of the beam. The inter-atomic long-range interactions within the structure of the CNT are incorporated into the model using Eringen's nonlocal elastic field theory. In this model, the mass can be deposited along an...

    Abstract
In this paper, a new approach for solving the problem of pole assignment, using static output feedback, has been proposed. The proposed approach is based on genetic algorithm where it can place all the closed-loop poles at desired locations with a high accuracy, provided that there exists a solution to the problem. It is also shown that how some known difficulties of static output feedback like order of system, multiplicity of the desired poles and the need for having closed-loop poles to be distinct or different from the open loop poles have been solved. Numerical examples at the end of the paper illustrate the applicability and the performance of the proposed method. © 2002 IEEE
