Influence of aluminide diffusion coating on the tensile properties of the Ni-base superalloy René 80

    , Article Surface and Coatings Technology ; Volume 202, Issue 8 , 2008 , Pages 1385-1391 ; 02578972 (ISSN) Rahmani, Kh ; Nategh, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Ni-base superalloy René 80 is widely used in manufacturing aircraft turbine blades. The service temperature of this alloy is in the range of 760-982 °C. Although this alloy possesses suitable mechanical, oxidation and hot corrosion properties, it is coated in order to increase its wear, oxidation, erosion and hot corrosion properties against harmful environmental service conditions. In this paper the influence of applying diffusion coating (CODEP-B) on the tensile properties of René 80 has been studied in the temperature range of 22-982 °C. Experimental results show that the tensile properties of the coated specimens are relatively lower than that of uncoated ones in the same conditions. But...

Sol-gel derived hydroxyapatite coating on TiB 2/TiB/Ti substrate

    , Article Surface Engineering ; Volume 28, Issue 7 , August , 2012 , Pages 526-531 ; 02670844 (ISSN) Esfahani, H ; Dabir, F ; Taheri, M ; Sohrabi, N ; Toroghinejad, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
The low erosion resistance of titanium and its alloys has prevented their widespread application as joint implants. In addition, one essential requirement for the implants to bond with the living bone is the formation of a bone-like apatite on their surfaces in the host body. To enhance the erosion resistance of the surface, a diffused layer of TiB2 was formed at 1000uC on the commercial pure titanium. Hydroxyapatite was then coated on the boronised titanium by means of dip coating in a sol-gel solution. In order to confirm the biocompatibility of the specimens, they were soaked in a simulated body fluid for several days. The surface morphology of the specimens after exposure was studied by...

Comparing three image processing algorithms to estimate the grain-size distribution of porous rocks from binary 2D images and sensitivity analysis of the grain overlapping degree

    , Article Special Topics and Reviews in Porous Media ; Volume 6, Issue 1 , 2015 , Pages 71-89 ; 21514798 (ISSN) Rabbani, A ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The grain-size distribution (GSD) of porous rocks is important in order to better understand their hydrodynamic behavior. Clear and precise GSD data can be used to computationally reconstruct rock structure for further analysis. In this study, three main algorithms for image analysis have been examined to estimate the GSD of clastic rocks. The main challenge in GSD determination from images is in detecting overlapping grains and measuring their size separately. In this study, three previously developed image processing algorithms are implemented on two-dimensional (2D) binary images of rocks in order to compare the obtained GSD from each of the methods, i.e., the mean intercept length...

Diffuse emissions of particles from iron ore piles by wind erosion

    , Article Environmental Engineering Science ; Volume 28, Issue 5 , 2011 , Pages 333-339 ; 10928758 (ISSN) Afshar Mohajer, N ; Torkian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Industrial air pollution from point and nonpoint sources of steel complexes has drawn increasingly more public attention in the past decades. Previous research efforts have been more concentrated on point sources of particulate emissions from these complexes. However, wind-induced particulate emissions from iron ore storage piles not only result in ambient air pollution but also increase economic adverse effects to the industry by loss of process raw materials. Experiments were conducted to assess the impact of wind speed and humidity on particulate emission rates from iron ore storage piles. A wind-generating system and specific iron ore, experimental piles (L:W:H of 30:11.5:5 cm) were...

    Abstract
Nanolaunchers are launch vehicles capable of carring light payloads (under 50 kg) to Low Earth orbit and received much attention in the few past years. Launching the nanosatellites grown about 30 times from 2008 to 2017. Since this category of launch vehicles has fewer developing costs and lower thechnology level, they fit developing space technology in our country. Conversely, the demand of high propellant mass fraction and specific impulse may be a serious difficulty to attain this technology. The only operating nanolauncher in the world is SS-520-5 which belongs to Japan and is a three-stage solid propellant launcher. The goal of this project is also the conceptual design and feasiblity...

    Abstract
According to available information and references, water leakage and internal erosion in bodies and foundations of embankment dams are the main reasons of many problems and failures. To reduce this risk in foundation, plastic cut off walls is one of the most reliable solutions. In this research the effect of specimen's age on the mechanical properties of plastic concrete was studied. This paper summarizes the test results which were conducted in unconfined and triaxial state. Plastic concrete specimens were prepared in the laboratory condition using the materials provided from the Silve dam site. Test results have shown that the time and confining pressure extremely affect the mechanical...

Distinguishing polymeric insulators PD sources through RF PD measurement

    Abstract
A better performance and consequently the widespread use of polymeric insulators in different parts of the power grid can increase their role in the grid reliability. The accumulation of contamination and housing-erosion are the two most effective factors in undermining the performance of this type of insulators. Therefore, electric utilities need to identify contaminated insulators for washing and cracks in polymeric housing to replace them with healthy specimens. This paper discusses the impact of contamination layer and housing-erosion of polymeric insulators on the partial discharges (PD) at the insulator surface, through RF-PRPD (phase resolved partial discharge) patterns. The existence...

Influence of unsteady flow hydrograph shape on local scouring around bridge pier

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers: Water Management ; Volume 165, Issue 9 , October , 2012 , Pages 473-480 ; 17417589 (ISSN) Borghei, S. M ; Kabiri-Samani, A ; Banihashem, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    ICE Pub  2012
    Abstract
Accurate estimation of scour depth is needed for economic and safe determination of bridge pier foundation depth. Most design criteria are based on maximum scour depth due to the steady design discharge without flow time limit. In this paper, the results are presented of an experimental investigation on local scouring around a single bridge pier under steady and unsteady flow regimes. For unsteady flow, triangular shape hydrographs with repeatable peaks have been chosen. Results show that both sharp and flat increases to the peak of hydrographs have a negligible effect on scour depth for the same base time. An equation is obtained to compute the scour depth due to a specific triangular...

    Local scour at open-channel junctions

    , Article Journal of Hydraulic Research ; Volume 48, Issue 4 , Sep , 2010 , Pages 538-542 ; 00221686 (ISSN) Borghei, S. M ; Jabbari Sahebari, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
High bed-shear stress resulting from secondary flows and velocity increase at a channel junction cause local erosion and deposition in natural rivers and earth-lined channels. Herein, the scour patterns at the junction of two loose bed channels were studied under clear-water conditions. The main dimensionless variables are the angle between the two approach flow branches, the discharge and width ratios of the tributary to the downstream channel branches, and the ratio of the mean downstream velocity to the threshold velocity. The results indicate that the position of the maximum scour depth temporally moves to the outer wall and upstream to the main channel, as affected by the dimensionless...

Particle trajectory study in submerged flows with baffles using ν̄2-f and k-ε turbulence models

    , Article Journal of Fluids Engineering, Transactions of the ASME ; Volume 132, Issue 5 , 2010 , Pages 0511051-05110510 ; 00982202 (ISSN) Mehdizadeh, A ; Firoozabadi, B ; Sherif, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the structure of a wall jet deflected by a baffle along with the trajectory of particles has been studied. This baffle is used to produce a stable deflected surface jet, thereby deflecting the high-velocity supercritical stream away from the bed to the surface. An elliptic relaxation turbulence model (ν̄2-f model) has been used to simulate this submerged flow. In recent years, the ν̄2- f turbulence model has become increasingly popular due to its ability to account for near-wall damping without use of damping functions. In addition, it has been proven that the ν̄2- f model is superior to other Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) methods in many flows where complex flow...

New insight into the filtration control of drilling fluids using a graphene-based nanocomposite under static and dynamic conditions

    , Article ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering ; Volume 9, Issue 38 , 2021 , Pages 12844-12857 ; 21680485 (ISSN) Movahedi, H ; Jamshidi, S ; Hajipour, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
During oil and gas well drilling, the filtration control of bentonite water-based drilling fluids (BT-WBDFs), as an environmentally friendly fluid, is crucial to avoid formation damage and swelling shale problems. One of the most critical problems is undesirable changes in the rheology and filtration properties of the BT-WBDFs because of salt contamination. Herein, the potential of using both graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and a graphene oxide-polyacrylamide (GO-PAM) nanocomposite is evaluated for controlling the filtration properties, especially in a salty medium. First, GO nanosheets were functionalized, and then the GO-PAM nanocomposite was synthesized using the solution polymerization...

Estimation of current-induced scour depth around pile groups using neural network and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system

    , Article Applied Soft Computing Journal ; Volume 9, Issue 2 , 2009 , Pages 746-755 ; 15684946 (ISSN) Zounemat Kermani, M ; Beheshti, A. A ; Ataie Ashtiani, B ; Sabbagh Yazdi, S. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The process of local scour around bridge piers is fundamentally complex due to the three-dimensional flow patterns interacting with bed materials. For geotechnical and economical reasons, multiple pile bridge piers have become more and more popular in bridge design. Although many studies have been carried out to develop relationships for the maximum scour depth at pile groups under clear-water scour condition, existing methods do not always produce reasonable results for scour predictions. It is partly due to the complexity of the phenomenon involved and partly because of limitations of the traditional analytical tool of statistical regression. This paper addresses the latter part and...
