, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Morshedi, Golnoosh (Author) ; Sadrhosseini, Hani (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A 2D simulation has been carried out to study the effect of magnetic field on heat transfer and pressure drop of nanofluid flowing through a pipe filled with porous medium. The nanofluid flow is modeled as a single-phase flow, and Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer equation is employed to model fluid flow in porous media. A constant uniform heat flux was imposed on the walls of the cylinder, and the values of Darcy number, Hartmann number, and volume fraction of the nanoparticles were selected as 0.1, 200, and 0.2, respectively. Effects of parameters such as Reynolds number, the material of the porous medium (conductivity and porosity), and material of nanofluids have been investigated in the...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Moezzi, Mahsa (Author) ; Kazemzadeh Hannani, Siamak (Supervisor) ; Farhanieh, Bijan (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
It is aimed in this study to numerically investigate the effect of contact angle on the heat transfer coefficient in oil-water two-phase flow. For this purpose, the finite element method (FEM) is used to solve the unsteady Navier-Stokes and energy equations. The level set method is also used to capture the interface between the phases. In the first part of the study, two-phase flow of the water and calibration oil is considered in a T-junction geometry at contact angles of 5°, 40°, and 75°. It is observed that the flow patterns formed in the microchannel depend on the initial flow condition which results in the hysteresis phenomenon. Investigating the effect of wall contact angle on the...

    Abstract
The use of nano-fluid, which is a stable solid liquid mixture, has been proposed as a new strategy for heat transfer operations. Much research has been done on heat transfer of nano-fluids until now, whereas the study of phenomena associated with phase change, such as boiling where there is heat transfer in larger scales is very necessary. The boiling process based on its potential for transferring high amounts of heat at low temperatures is a very effective and common mechanism, and it occurs in many engineering systems, including boilers at plants, evaporators in refrigeration systems and nuclear reactors. Also, a considerable amount of research was done recently in the field of...

    Abstract
In petrochemical, Process condensate is mixtures of dissolved gasses and water. Process condensate striper tower is a physical separation equipment where dissolved gasses remove from water by saturated steam. The Process condensate feed is introduced at the top of the column and the steam input is located at the bottom. When the process condensate enters the stripper tower, it comes down the tower also when the steam enters the tower, it goes up, because there is packing portion in the stripper tower and two streams are countercurrent, as result contact between steam and process condensate, a lot of dissolved gases vapors and exits with steam from top of tower. After leaving the tower, the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Akrami, Hamid Reza (Author) ; Nouri Borujerdi, Ali (Supervisor) ; Kazemzadeh Hannani, Siamak (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Fully developed fluid flow and heat transfer is numerically investigated in micro-channels. There are many techniques to intensify heat transfer for internal flows, such as: increasing Reynolds number, extending surface area of channel wall and also disrupting the boundary layer thickness on the wall. Among these, extension wall surface area is a common technique. There are several ways to extend surface area including finned, slotted, chemically etched, grooved as well as porous media adhered wall surface. One other method that we work on it is modifying wall cross-section and usage of uniform suction porous media. The governing equations include the momentum equation of the core region...

The effects of the thermal conductivity ratio, Darcy number, porosity, Reynolds number and height of the porous insert on velocity and temperature field were investigated. The results show that the flow behavior and its associated heat transfer are susceptible to the variation of the...

Design of Improved Multi Effect Desalination (MED)Plant to Increase the Heat Transfer and Reduce the Scaling

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Afshoon, Golnaz (Author) ; Avami, Akram (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There are different technologies for supplying water from alternative sources that meet different needs. In relation to thermal technologies such as multi-effect distillation, the highest water quality is obtained, there is no limit on the concentration of the incoming water, and there is the least need for maintenance. On the other hand, thermal technologies consume higher energy than membrane technologies. In this process, the better the heat transfer, the number of steps can be increased, and this means the production of more distilled water for the same amount of thermal energy. The distilled water layer on the surface of the heat exchanger has a high thermal resistance compared to the...

Sintering means the consolidation of a pressed powder sample into an integrated solid. This process can be done in different ways, such as traditional sintering, microwave, spark plasma, etc. In the process of fabrication of nuclear fuel pellets, after producing uranium dioxide in powder form and making corrections on the size distribution of powder grains, it would be nolded and then sintered. In this research, the temperature evolution of the green pellets introduced to microwave heating were investigated. In this report, a brief overview of the principles of microwave heating is...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Tabatabai Ghomsheh, Isar (Author) ; Nouri Borojerdi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
High temperature modular reactors (HTR) are the most likely next generation reactors that will meet future energy needs. Their inherent safety is the most attractive feature of this type of reactors, and along with that, we can mention the ease of their design, operation and maintenance. Since the reactor is safe in the event of an accident, without activating any external source of security, this reactor is considered intrinsically safe. Despite this inherent property, the reactor is only affected by its physical characteristics, and therefore, many dangerous situations are prevented. The inherent safety feature of this reactor is completely dependent on its proper design. The power density...

An Experimental-Theoretical Study on Batch (Static) Sublimation and Derivation of a Correlation for its Heat Transfer Coefficient

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mottafegh, Amir Reza (Author) ; Otukesh, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The major features of batch sublimation were investigated in an experimental-theoretical study. An experimental setup with real-time displays, sublimated dry ice blocks of different sizes, with circular or rectangular geometries. When temperature of hotplate was changed from -30 to 200 oC, heat transfer coefficient “hsub” decreased from 126 to 70 W/m2K, while thermal flux increased, linearly. Weight and area of the block had a positive/negative effects on “hsub”, respectively. In theoretical part, at first, two “linear-gradient” and “cubic” models were developed by a combined mass-momentum-energy balance. The latter used Von Karman temperature profile, and in cases of circular and...
