Thermodynamic forces and flows between a thermal bath and a squeezed thermal bath: Application to optomechanical systems

    , Article Physical Review A ; Volume 105, Issue 6 , 2022 ; 24699926 (ISSN) Shahidani, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Physical Society  2022
    Abstract
When a quantum system is coupled to two thermal baths at different temperatures, the temperature gradient as a thermodynamic force causes stationary heat flow within the system. We present a theoretical model to study how quantum features of squeezed thermal reservoirs affect the classical formulation of entropy production in terms of generalized forces and flows. Applying the quantum phase-space method to calculate Wigner entropy production helps us identify heat and squeezing fluxes and their corresponding generalized forces in terms of input-noise correlations of both reservoirs. Our study highlights the essential role played by the correlation of the input-noise operators of the thermal...

    Abstract
Thermal analysis of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) dams is generally carried out considering identical ambient boundary conditions at upstream and downstream faces. For the case of Shahri-Kor Dam (an RCC dam with a height of 57 m), recorded thermal data depicts a considerable difference between upstream and downstream ambient temperatures, especially during cold months. This paper investigates how taking this difference into account can affect the thermal response of the dam. For this purpose, two thermal analyses are carried out with and without consideration of these different ambient boundary conditions (DABC). Consequently, the computed temperatures at representative points are compared...

Accelerated heat transfer in thermal cracking reactor tubes: the time for sinusoidal corrugated configuration

    , Article Brazilian Journal of Chemical Engineering ; 2022 ; 01046632 (ISSN) Mansouri Mogharab, A ; Ardjmand, M ; Towfighi Darian, J ; Khorasheh, F ; Sharif University of Technology
Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH  2022
    Abstract
Olefin industry came to a commercialization maturity, but still energy consumption, coke formation and thermal cracking optimization seem hot debates. The typical use of static mixers or fins inside the pipes itself leads to significant pressure drop, leading to higher power consumption and lower selectivity of olefins production. Herein we propose an innovative approach, i.e., accelerated sinusoidal heat transfer through mixing at viscous sublayer pipe-fluid interface. CFD simulation by SOLIDWORKS, ANSYS FLUENT computer-aided computations visualized hydrodynamic wave effects on heat transfer in corrugated tube taking bare tubes as reference. The length and outside diameter of tube were...

    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
The dynamics and heat transfer performance of droplets play an important role in electrowetting systems. Contrary to the growing trend towards non-Newtonian fluids in electrotechnical systems, most researchers have focused on Newtonian fluids. In the current study, the interface is tracked by the phase-field method and afterwards, the numerical model is confirmed by comparing the results obtained from previous experimental and theoretical works. Several parameters such as power-law index and contact angle are analyzed. Furthermore, the dynamics and heat transfer of the droplets on chemically or topographically structured substrates in the presence of electrowetting are examined. It has been...

    , Article Finite Elements in Analysis and Design ; Volume 198 , 2022 ; 0168874X (ISSN) Yasbolaghi, R ; Khoei, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
In this paper, a novel coupling technique is developed in continuum–atomistic multi-scale analysis of temperature field problems. In this manner, a new thermostat is introduced based on the single-atom sub-system, where its capability to control the temperature and produce the canonical ensemble is investigated. Moreover, the performance of proposed thermostat is verified by comparing the distribution of velocities to the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. The single-atom sub-system thermostat is then incorporated into the concurrent multi-scale model to relate the temperature field between the continuum and atomistic domains with complex lattice thermal fields. In order to illustrate the...

    Abstract
In this paper, a computational technique is presented for the isothermal and non-isothermal water injection into naturally fractured oil reservoirs. A remarkable number of naturally fractured reservoirs contain relatively heavy oils that could not be extracted economically; hence, the thermal recovery methods are extensively used for such reservoirs. In this study, the effectiveness of hot water injection over cold (isothermal) water injection in oil production is quantified. The influence of long and short fractures and their alignments on oil recovery are discussed. To this end, a 2D model for two-phase fluid flow and heat transfer is presented. The medium is assumed to be partially...

    Abstract
The aim of this paper is to provide a solution to decrease water consumption in the slab-cooling unit of Mobarakeh Steel Complex in Iran. The plan should give an hourly decline in water consumption during a one-year operation period to calculate the annual reduction in water consumption of the proposed process. Recommended solutions for the conversion scheme of an existing wet cooling tower to a dry or hybrid cooling system require modeling of the slab cooling process. The curves of temperature drop in slabs are extracted in this paper by modeling the transient heat transfer of the slabs in the cooling process. This will reduce the computational volume. Then, the design and optimization of...

    Abstract
Higher than a standard level, the humidity provides a suitable environment for the pathogenic microorganisms to grow and increases energy consumption for cooling, increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Desiccant air-conditioning (DAC) is an effective method to reduce humidity and energy simultaneously. Conventional desiccants are not suitable for use as a desiccant in building air conditioners, mainly because of high regeneration temperature and other issues such as limited equilibrium capacity and hydrothermal and cyclic instability. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a novel class of porous crystalline materials without the disadvantages of traditional desiccants. They benefit from a huge...

Dynamic Modeling of Top-Fired Steam Methane Reforming Furnaces

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moein Kia, Zahra (Author) ; Farhadi, Fathollah (Supervisor) ; Vafa, Ehsan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
CFD models are accurate but time-consuming for simulation and optimization of steam methane reformer and controlling the tube wall temperature, and syngas production rate and unsuitable for online optimization. Empirical data-driven models are less accurate when there are wide variations in operating conditions. The physics-based model presented in this thesis overcomes these limitations. In this model, the furnace side and the process side are divided into zones with uniform temperature and composition, and for each zone, mass, energy and momentum balances are derived. Radiative heat transfer modeling and calculation of exchange areas are accomplished with the zone method. The system of...

Implementation and Analysis of Thermal Model of High Voltage Induction Motors

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khosravifar, Mahdi (Author) ; Oraee Mirzamani, Hashem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today, various industries rely on high-power, high-voltage induction motors for diverse applications. Given the critical role these motors play, any reduction in their lifespan or occurrence of failures can lead to substantial financial losses and even pose risks to lives. One significant factor influencing motor life is the temperature of its components. Manufacturers strive to enhance motor power while minimizing dimensions for economic reasons, but this increases power density and subsequent losses, elevating motor temperature. Consequently, thermal analysis becomes crucial, posing a significant challenge for companies producing high-power induction motors. In this study, a thermal model...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ranjbar Kermani, Javad (Author) ; Shafii, Mohammad Behshad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The unique properties of phase change materials (PCMs), such as high latent heat and nearly constant phase change temperature, have made them a suitable option for use in thermal energy storage systems and thermal management systems. However, the low thermal conductivity of these materials has imposed limitations on their widespread use in industries. In this study, for the first time, the effect of injecting a boiling fluid (BF) into the PCM container to enhance heat transfer and accelerate the solidification process has been experimentally investigated. In this regard, paraffin wax and acetone have been selected as the PCM and the BF, and the effects of parameters such as the initial...
