    Abstract
A novel optimized chelating hydrogel was synthesized via graft copolymerization of acrylamide and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (as two-dentate chelating co-monomer) onto salep (a multicomponent polysaccharide obtained from dried tubers of certain natural terrestrial orchids) using N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker and ammonium persulfate as an initiator. Reaction parameters (N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide and ammonium persulfate amounts as well as acrylamide/2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate weight ratio) affecting the water absorption of the chelating hydrogel were optimized using a systematic method to achieve a hydrogel with high swelling capacity as possible. Heavy metal ion adsorption...

    Abstract
In this work, a model is developed to continuously predict homogeneous and inhomogeneous swelling behavior of pH/temperature sensitive PNIPAM hydrogels. Employing the model, homogeneous swelling of the pH/temperature sensitive hydrogel is investigated for free and biaxial constrained swelling cases. Comparing the model results with the experimental data available in the literature, the validity of the model is confirmed. The model is then employed to investigate inhomogeneous swelling of a spherical shell on a hard core both analytically and numerically for pH or temperature variations. In this regard, numerical tools are developed via preparing a user defined subroutine in ABAQUS software....

    , Article Journal of Biomaterials Applications ; Volume 31, Issue 1 , 2016 , Pages 152-161 ; 08853282 (ISSN) Baniasadi, H ; Mashayekhan, S ; Fadaoddini, S ; Haghirsharifzamini, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAGE Publications Ltd  2016
    Abstract
In this study, we reported the preparation of self cross-linked oxidized alginate-gelatin hydrogels for muscle tissue engineering. The effect of oxidation degree (OD) and oxidized alginate/gelatin (OA/GEL) weight ratio were examined and the results showed that in the constant OA/GEL weight ratio, both cross-linking density and Young's modulus enhanced by increasing OD due to increment of aldehyde groups. Furthermore, the degradation rate was increased with increasing OD probably due to decrement in alginate molecular weight during oxidation reaction facilitated degradation of alginate chains. MTT cytotoxicity assays performed on Wharton's Jelly-derived umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells...

    Abstract
A novel and cost effective method of bio-separation developed recently is magnetic separation technology. In this study, super paramagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles are used for separation of bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein from plasma/serum samples at optimized conditions. The synthesis of chitosan hydrogel networks by two variant approaches that involve (1) crosslinking of chitosan with formaldehyde and (2) formation of carboxy methyl chitosan mediated complex, was investigated and the percent of gelation, swelling ratio and equilibrium water content were calculated. The results revealed the formation of better quality hydrogel from the first approach. In step 1, to quantify the BSA...

    Abstract
In this research, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were modified by dendritic macromonomer. Herein, polyamidoamine with acrylamide end groups was incorporated on MWCNTs. Afterwards, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), (PNIPAM), was grafted on polyamidoamine in a facile synthesis. Then, doxorubicin as anticancer drug was loaded on this nanocarrier. The drug release was studied at below and above the lower critical solution temperature of PNIPAM, (LCST 32 °C), 27 °C and 37 °C, respectively. At 37 °C (body temperature) the polymer shell dehydrated and the drug release increased. The profile of drug release was expressed by Higuchi's equation which indicated that the drug release mechanism was...

    Abstract
A novel superabsorbent composite based on kappa-Carrageenan (κC) was prepared by graft copolymerization of acrylamide (AAm) onto κC in the presence of bentonite powder using methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinking agent, ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator, and sodium carbonate as a pore-forming agent. The swelling behavior in distilled water and in solutions with different pH values was investigated. The results indicated that with increasing carrageenan/bentonite weight ratio, the swelling capacity is increased but the gel content is decreased. The swelling rate of the hydrogels was improved by introducing sodium carbonate as pore-forming agent. The prepared superadsorbent...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rezvan, Gelareh (Author) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor) ; Pircheraghi, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Wound is a defect or failure in the skin texture which occurs as a result of physical or heat injuries or physiological conditions. The wound dress as a temporary cover can improve wound healing process and due to the unique properties, hydrogels have become appropriate choice for this application. Hydrogel’s structure allows drug to be loaded in the wound dress. Hydrogel wound dress should have adequate fluidity to cover wound’s bed and make full contact with the skin. Sufficient cohesion and strength is also necessary to allow the wound dress to remove from wound completely. Therefore, the study on the viscoelastic properties of hydrogel is important. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khozaei Ravari, Mojtaba (Author) ; Mashayekhan, Shohreh (Supervisor) ; Baghban Eslami Nejad, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Methods that has been used for articular defects are faced with many limitations, so new therapies based on tissue engineering were taken into consideration in recent years. However, tissue engineering also encounters challenges regarding optimal scaffold construction and suitable cell source selection. Mature harvested chondrocytes are limited in number and may lose their chondrogenic potential in several cultures, leading to dedifferentiation. In addition, using stem cells also presents unique challenges associated with them, among which hypertrophic differentiation is the most substantial problem. Choosing the appropriate biomaterial similar to the cartilage structure with sufficient...

    Abstract
Petroleum contamination of soil is a serious problem throughout oil-producing countries. One of the cost-effective options for removing contaminants from shallow soils is phytoremediation. Vegetation, by stimulating the microorganisms via releasing root exudates near the rhizosphere, may play an important role in the biodegradation of toxic organic chemicals in soil. This experiment investigates the efficiency of this emerging technology following the implementation of five plant species. The study was carried out in a greenhouse using crude oil-contaminated soil from sites around the Tehran Refinery. To study the effect of a water-absorbent agent, we also used hydrogel in this experiment....

    Abstract
In this study chitosan hydrogel beads with porosity ∼ 0.86 and diameter ∼ 2 ± 0.07 mm were prepared from 85 % deacetylated chitosan for removal of Cd2+ ions from aqueous solutions. Incorporation of both biological and synthetic materials has been known as an effective strategy for improving mechanical and biological properties of the scaffolds. In the present work, a simple process was developed to fabricate hybrid hydrogel scaffolds with a biomimetic architecture from the natural urinary bladder...
