    Abstract
The performance of the tower based concentrated solar thermal (CST-tower) plant is very sensitive to the operation strategy of the plant and the incident heat flux on the receiver. To date, most studies have been examined only the design mode characteristics of the cavity receivers, but this paper significantly expands the literature by considering non-design operating conditions of this important sub-component of the CST-tower plants. A feasible non-design operating conditions of the cavity receivers that was considered in this study is the storage mode of operation. Two practical dynamic control strategies were examined then to find the most efficient approach: fixed solar field mass...

Optimization of photovoltaic electrolyzer hybrid systems; taking into account the effect of climate conditions

    , Article Energy Conversion and Management ; Volume 118 , 2016 , Pages 438-449 ; 01968904 (ISSN) Sayedin, F ; Maroufmashat, A ; Sattari, S ; Elkamel, A ; Fowler, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Solar energy will make a valuable contribution for power generation in the future. However the intermittency of solar energy has become an important issue in the utilization of PV system, especially small scale distributed solar energy conversion systems. The issue can be addressed through the management of production and storage of the energy in the form of hydrogen. The hydrogen can be produced by solar photovoltaic (PV) powered electrolysis of water. The amount of transferred energy to an electrolyzer from a PV module is a function of the distance between maximum power points (MPP) of PV module and the electrolyzer operating points. The distance can be minimized by optimizing the number...

    Abstract
The future of urban energy systems relies on the transition to "smart energy networks" which incorporate energy storage with renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. Hydrogen provides a desirable energy vector for both energy storage and exchange of energy between energy hubs within a smart energy network. This paper aims to develop a generic mathematical model for the optimal energy management of future communities where hydrogen is used as an energy vector. An energy hub is a novel concept that systematically and holistically considers the energy requirements of both mobility and stationary loads. In order to perform optimization studies, the minimization of capital cost of...

    Abstract
While Afghanistan's power sector is almost completely dependent on fossil fuels, it still cannot meet the rising power demand of this country. Deploying a combination of renewable energy systems with hydrogen production as the excess energy storage mechanism could be a sustainable long-term approach for addressing some of the energy problems of Afghanistan. Since Badakhshan is known to have a higher average wind speed than any other Afghan province, in this study, a technical, economic, and carbon footprint assessment was performed to investigate the potential for wind power and hydrogen production in this province. Wind data of four stations in Badakhshan were used for technical assessment...

    Abstract
Due to population growth and industrial development, Iran is facing the challenge of energy supply in various industrial, power plant, agricultural, and residential sectors. While most of Iran's energy supply comes from fossil fuels, these fuels have devastating environmental impacts. Therefore, Iran has to invest more in its renewable energy sources. Given that many locations of Iran have significant wind, solar, and geothermal potential, this study used a combination of SWOT, multicriteria decision-making approaches, and game theory to identify the best renewable energy development plans for the country. The Stepwise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA) technique was applied to weight...

In situ polymerization of curcumin incorporated polyurethane/zinc oxide nanocomposites as a potential biomaterial

    , Article Reactive and Functional Polymers ; Volume 180 , 2022 ; 13815148 (ISSN) Shah, S. A. A ; Athir, N ; Shehzad, F. K ; Cheng, J ; Gao, F ; Zhang, J ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Curcumin incorporated polyurethanes (CPU) are gaining much attention as a biomaterial. However, challenges are still remained due to hydrophobicity and low mechanical strength of CPU. Herein, we synthesized the CPU/ZnO nanocomposites with good mechanical and improved hydrophilic properties via in-situ polymerization. A series of curcumin incorporated polyurethane with different concentrations of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnCPU) are synthesized by using the curcumin, polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the soft segment, hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) as the hard segment, and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) as the chain extender. The addition of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) facilitated the soft domain of PU which is...

Synthesis of a nanostructured MgH2-Ti alloy composite for hydrogen storage via combined vacuum arc remelting and mechanical alloying

    , Article Materials Letters ; Volume 65, Issue 7 , 2011 , Pages 1120-1122 ; 0167577X (ISSN) Mahmoudi, N ; Kaflou, A ; Simchi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
To improve the hydrogen kinetics of magnesium hydride, TiCr 1.2Fe0.6 alloy was prepared by vacuum arc remelting (VAR) and the alloy was co-milled with MgH2 to process nanostructured MgH2-5 at.% TiCr1.2Fe0.6 powder. The hydrogen desorption properties of the composite powder were studied and compared with pure magnesium hydride. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the composite powder prepared by VAR/mechanical alloying (MA) procedure consisted of β-MgH2, γ-MgH2, bcc Ti-Cr-Fe alloy, and small amount of MgO. The average size of particles and their grain structure after 4 h MA were determined by a laser particle size analyzer and XRD method and found to be 194 nm and 11 nm,...

    Abstract
In order to achieve the international climate goals and to keep the global temperature increase below 2 °C, carbon capture and storage in large point sources of CO2 emissions has received considerable attention. In recent years, mitigation of CO2 emissions from the power sector has been studied extensively whereas other industrial point source emitters such as hydrogen industry have also great potential for CO2 abatement. This study aims to draw an updated comparison between different hydrogen and power cogeneration systems using natural gas and coal as feedstock. The goal is to show the relative advantage of cogeneration systems with respect to CO2 emission reduction costs. Accordingly, the...

    Abstract
The use of hybrid renewable energy has increased in recent years due to the growing environmental concerns caused by the consumption of fossil fuels. The purpose of this study was the economic-environmental feasibility of using hybrid energy systems in one of the most polluted and populated provinces in Iran, Isfahan province. Various components of the hybrid energy system such as wind turbine (WT), photovoltaic panel (PV), diesel generator (DG), converter (CV) along with two scenarios of energy storage including battery (BT) and hydrogen storage have been considered in modeling the energy system. Six scenarios were considered based on the combination of different components for supplying...
