    Abstract
Incorporation of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and crumb rubber (CR) materials into asphalt mixtures have been of great importance from sustainability point of view. Although, inclusion of RAP materials in asphalt mixtures improves the rutting resistance at high temperature, the low temperature (LT) and intermediate temperature (IT) cracking performance of RAP mixtures may need additional considerations. In this regard, different schemes of modification have been applied to RAP mixtures to address its performance weaknesses. This study evaluated the effect of RAP and CR in combination with Sasobit and hydrated lime on the cracking performance of asphalt mixtures. The LT and IT...

Synthesis of W17O47 nanothick plates with preferred orientation and their photocatalytic activity

    , Article Surface and Interface Analysis ; Volume 43, Issue 11 , 2011 , Pages 1397-1402 ; 01422421 (ISSN) Azimirad, R ; Khosravi, P ; Moshfegh, A. Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A simple method for synthesis of W17O47 nanothick plates by annealing sol-gel-deposited tungsten oxide thin films on soda lime substrate has been reported. After heat treatment of the dried thin films at 700 °C in N2 ambient for 60 min, W17O47 nanothick plates with [100] orientation were obtained. The synthesized product was characterized and analyzed by, X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM, XPS and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometery. According to SEM observations, nanothick plates grew with random orientations on the surface. In addition, it was observed that some of the nanothick plates were constituted from several nanosheets. XRD analysis determined that the nanothick plates were mainly...

The effects of stabilizers on the thermal and the mechanical properties of rammed earth at various humidities and their environmental impacts

    , Article Construction and Building Materials ; Volume 200 , 2019 , Pages 616-629 ; 09500618 (ISSN) Toufigh, V ; Kianfar, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
The overall behavior of rammed earth (RE) as a low embodied energy construction method can be enhanced by using stabilizers. Several studies have been performed on cement and lime stabilized RE. However, studies on other additives, especially the sustainable ones, are limited. In this research, the effect of stabilizers including cement, pozzolan, microsilica, fiberglass, guar gum and phase change material (PCM) was evaluated on the performance of RE mixtures. The mixtures were assessed by considering the durability, shrinkage, thermal conductivity, mechanical properties and their sensitivity to the humidity. Then, the correlations were determined between the mechanical properties and the...

In vitro study of hydroxyapatite/polycaprolactone (HA/PCL) nanocomposite synthesized by an in situ sol-gel process

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering C ; Volume 33, Issue 1 , 2013 , Pages 390-396 ; 09284931 (ISSN) Rezaei, A ; Mohammadi, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Hydroxyapatite (HA) is the most substantial mineral constituent of a bone which has been extensively used in medicine as implantable materials, owing to its good biocompatibility, bioactivity high osteoconductive, and/or osteoinductive properties. Nevertheless, its mechanical property is not utmost appropriate for a bone substitution. Therefore, a composite consist of HA and a biodegradable polymer is usually prepared to generate an apt bone scaffold. In the present work polycaprolactone (PCL), a newly remarkable biocompatible and biodegradable polymer, was employed as a matrix and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles were used as a reinforcement element of the composite. HA/PCL nanocomposites were...

Nanomechanical properties of TiO2 granular thin films

    , Article ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces ; Volume 2, Issue 9 , 2010 , Pages 2629-2636 ; 19448244 (ISSN) Yaghoubi, H ; Taghavinia, N ; Keshavarz Alamdari, E ; Volinsky, A.A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Post-deposition annealing effects on nanomechanical properties of granular TiO2 films on soda-lime glass substrates were studied. In particular, the effects of Na diffusion on the films' mechanical properties were examined. TiO2 photocatalyst films, 330 nm thick, were prepared by dip-coating using a TiO2 sol, and were annealed between 100 °C and 500 °C. Film's morphology, physical and nanomechanical properties were characterized by atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential thermo-gravimetric analysis, and nanoindentation. Contrary to expectations, the maximum film hardness was achieved for 300°C annealing, with a value of 0.69 ± 0.05 GPa....
