    Abstract
This investigation focused on a comparison between hydroxyapatite (HA) and carbon-nanotube-reinforced hydroxyapatite composite (CNTs/HA) coatings. The HA and CNTs/HA composite (with 5wt% CNTs) coatings were prepared with the sol-gel method on 316L stainless steel. Phase evaluation by means of XRD and Raman spectroscopy was performed on the HA and CNTs/HA composite coatings. The coatings were immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF) in order to evaluate the biological properties of the coatings. During the first week of immersion, the increase in the amount of Ca2+ precipitation in the SBF when CNTs/HA was used was lower than for the HA coatings. This behavior can be related to the difference...

    Abstract
TiO2-graphene (TiO2-GR) nanocomposites were synthesized using photocatalytic reduction method. TiO2-GR nanocomposites were thereafter doped with noble metals (Pt and Pd) by chemical reduction of the corresponding cations. The samples were characterized by different techniques. The addition of GR to TiO2 decreases the crystalline size of TiO2 due to the homogeneous dispersion of the TiO2 nanoparticles on GR sheets and prevention of coagulation of TiO2 nanoparticles during synthesis process. In addition, the surface area of TiO2 was increased by addition of GR and deposition of noble metals which helps to prevent agglomeration of graphene sheets and TiO 2 nanoparticles. Red shifts to the...

    Abstract
Two different hydroxyapatite based composites reinforced by oxide ceramic (20 wt%) nano crystals were synthesized by high-energy ball milling and sintered by pressure less technique. Alumina and titania nanoparticles as secondary phases improved densification and mechanical behavior of apatite and postponed its decomposition to the tricalcium phosphate (TCP) phases at elevated temperatures. Increasing the relative density of apatite using nano reinforcements leads to enhance the bending strength by more than 40% and 27% (as compared to the pure HA) and increase the hardness from 2.52 to 5.12 (Al2O3 composite) and 4.21 (TiO2 addition) GPa, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM),...

    Abstract
In this paper, for obtaining an overall size-dependent yield function for nanocomposites containing aligned cylindrical nanofibers, the effects of interface residual stress and interface elasticity are taken into account within a micromechanical framework. Toward this goal, the modified Hill's condition is used, and then, in order to consider effects of the interface residual stress, strains are decomposed into two parts, a part due to the external loadings and the other due to the interface residual stress. Next, utilizing the field fluctuation method, an overall yield function containing effective elastic constants of the material is derived and then simplified for practical loading...

    Abstract
In this paper, the well-known effective medium approximation (EMA) and coupled dipole approximation (CDA) methods are employed to study the optical properties of a metal nanoparticle-block copolymer (MNP-BCP) nanocomposite. This approach is applied to study a system consisting of small gold spherical nanoparticles randomly distributed in the cylindrical micelles of a di-BCP. At first, the EMA method is used to obtain the effective dielectric function of a semi-metallic cylinder. Then, the extinction spectrum of the hexagonal 2D-array of semi-metallic cylinders is obtained by the CDA method. This procedure makes it possible to study simultaneously both the electromagnetic extinction of MNPs...

    Abstract
Recent studies have shown that the surface/interface free energy plays an important role in the effective mechanical properties of solids with nanosized inhomogeneity. In the present study, an analytical model is developed for 3D axisymmetric analysis of short fiber nanocomposites including the fiber end region, subjected to an applied axial load considering surface effects. Closed form expressions are obtained for 3D stress filed in the fiber and matrix. Moreover, performing numerical examples, it is shown that the elastic stress field is size dependent in both the fiber and matrix especially for fiber radii less than 50 nm

    , Article Materials Characterization ; Volume 75 , 2013 , Pages 108-114 ; 10445803 (ISSN) Asgharzadeh, H ; Kim, H. S ; Simchi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
An ultrafine-grained Al6063/Al2 O3 (0.8vol.%, 25nm) nanocomposite was prepared via powder metallurgy route through reactive mechanical alloying and hot powder extrusion. Scanning electron microcopy, transmission electron microscopy, and back scattered electron diffraction analysis showed that the grain structure of the nanocomposite is trimodal and composed of nano-size grains (<0.1μm), ultrafine grains (0.1-1μm), and micron-size grains (>1μm) with random orientations. Evaluation of the mechanical properties of the nanocomposite based on the strengthening-mechanism models revealed that the yield strength of the ultrafine-grained nanocomposite is mainly controlled by the high-angle grain...
