, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Heydari, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Moosavi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to population growth, the demand for water supply has increased. This need has drawn attention to the use of consumed and treatable water resources. Organic pollutants are a key source of water pollution. On the other hand, petrochemical oil pollution and frequent oil accidents during oil production or maritime transport have become one of the environmental problems. There are different methods for water and oil separation and water purification that in the present project, selective separation can be achieved by using hydrophobic materials and surface roughness and creating surfaces with two properties: superhydrophobic and ultra-oil friendly. This method is also very effective, cheap...

Studying and Reviewing the Modification, Completion or Change of the Classical Theories Used in the Simulation of Resin Injection Network for Manufacturing of a Large Composite Structure by Means of Vacuum Infusion Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keramati Tavallaei, Hossein (Author) ; Abedian, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, liquid resin injection processes for aviation applications have been considered an alternative to conventional autoclave-based processes. At present, these processes have challenges that have been denied industry trust due to their inability to be objectively reproducible. In the last decade, some software has been developed to simulate the vacuum injection process, but this software does not have enough capability to predict the injection network, and an operator with sufficient empirical knowledge must use this software. In recent years, researchers have used this softwares to simulate the process, but so far no software has been developed that can offer injection...

Effect of nanoclays on the mechanical properties and durability of novolac phenolic resin/woven glass fiber composite at various chemical environments

    , Article Composites Part A: Applied Science and Manufacturing ; Vol. 63 , 2014 , pp. 149-158 ; ISSN: 1359835X Eesaee, M ; Shojaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Both natural montmorilonite (CN) and organically modified montmorilonite (CB) improved significantly the mechanical performance of novolac phenolic resin (PF)/woven glass-fiber (GF) composites due to their nanodispersion and good interfacial interaction with the matrix. It was revealed that the incorporation of 2.5 wt% of the clays enhances the elastic modulus up to 38% for CN and 43% for CB. Aging of PF/GF composites at various aqueous solutions, i.e. water, brine and acidic environments, increased stiffness of the composite (∼100-250% increase in elastic modulus) due to possible secondary crosslinking caused by water molecules and hydroxyl groups of PF resin. However, aging led to the...

Fracture toughness of a hybrid rubber modified epoxy. II. Effect of loading rate

    , Article Journal of Applied Polymer Science ; Volume 125, Issue 3 , January , 2012 , Pages 2476-2483 ; 00218995 (ISSN) Abadyan, M ; Kouchakzadeh, M. A ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Wiley  2012
    Abstract
Effect of loading rate on toughness characteristics of hybrid rubber-modified epoxy was investigated. Epoxy was modified by amine-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (ATBN) and recycled tire. Samples were tested at various loading rates of 1-1000 mm/min. Fracture toughness measurements revealed synergistic toughening in hybrid system at low loading rates (1-10 mm/min); hybrid system exhibited higher fracture toughness value in comparison with the ATBN-modified resin with same modifier content. However, synergistic toughening was eliminated by increasing the loading rate. At higher loading rates (10-1000), the fracture toughness of hybrid system decreased gradually to the level lower than that...

    Abstract
Asphaltene deposition during oil production and transportation causes extensive damage to reservoirs and wellhead equipment. In this study, the effects of native and non-native resins as well as those of their mixtures on the asphaltene deposition process are investigated. A novel pressure, volume, and temperature (PVT) visual cell is used to check the effect of resin on asphaltene deposition at different pressures and reservoir temperatures. Two Iranian crude oil samples with different potentials of asphaltene deposition (low and high) were used in these tests. During depressurizing in the presence of native and non-native resins, the amount of asphaltene deposited was measured. To monitor...

Cure Kinetics of Nanodiamond-Filled Epoxy Resin: Influence of Nanodiamond Surface Functionality

    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 54, Issue 36 , August , 2015 , Pages 8954-8962 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Aris, A ; Shojaei, A ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Chemical Society  2015
    Abstract
Thermally oxidized nanodiamond (OND), amine-functionalized ND (AND) and untreated ND (UND) were added to epoxy/TETA at 1 wt % loading. The ND enhanced the dynamic storage modulus of epoxy while decreasing the glass transition temperature because of the increment of free volume in the vicinity of the ND surfaces. The ND induced an acceleration effect on the curing reaction which could be due to functional groups of the ND and lack of any steric hindrance on molecules by the ND particles themselves. The Vyazovkin model-free isoconversional method indicated that all NDs decreased the activation energy; among them, AND showed the lowest value because of the significant promotion of the epoxide...

    , Article Fuel ; Volume 165 , 2016 , Pages 75-85 ; 00162361 (ISSN) Lashkar Bolooki, M ; Riazi, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Zeinol Abedini Hezave, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd
    Abstract
It is well established that the heavy oil components including asphaltenes and resins play vital roles on the interfacial tension (IFT) of acidic crude oil (ACO) and aqueous solutions. Therefore, this experimental work is designed to investigate the possible synergism between salt ions, resin, and asphaltene on the IFT of ACO/low and high salinity brines containing MgCl2/NaCl and CaCl2. The results demonstrate that a complex ion of MgCl2 - resin component created in the solution could occupy the sites at the interface at high MgCl2 concentration. However, the results show that on the contrary, the molecular arrangement of MgCl2 and asphaltene at low and high MgCl2 concentration could be...

    Abstract
In this research, compressive and tensile behaviors of polymer concrete have been investigated. A series of tests were performed on polymer concrete (PC) specimens with different amounts of epoxy resin to investigate the effect of epoxy resin content on behavior of PC. For prediction of this behavior the disturbed state concept (DSC) has been used. The proposed model was then verified by predicting laboratory compressive tests used to find parameters along with independent data sets from other researchers. Moreover, the applicability of existing cement concrete models for predicting the behavior of PC was assessed since they are basically phenomenological, based on experimental observation...

    Abstract
This work deals with the preparation of epoxy-clay nanocomposites. The results show that the mechanical properties of nanocomposites depend on their compatibility, the epoxy resin used and the purity of the nanoclay. The used bentonite was purified and the effects of the organoclay synthesis and various additives on its characteristics were evaluated. X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to analyze the microstructure and the phase composition of the nanoclay. The XRD results revealed that when the modifier addition was increased from 10wt.% to 40 wt.%, the interlayer spacing of the nanoclay increased from 12.43 Å being...

Morphology development and mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester resin containing nanodiamonds

    , Article Polymer International ; Volume 66, Issue 6 , 2017 , Pages 950-959 ; 09598103 (ISSN) Hashemi, M ; Shojaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Unsaturated polyester/styrene (UP) resin was filled with nanodiamonds (NDs) containing carboxyl and methacrylate functionalities using mechanical mixing. Field emission SEM exhibited a uniform dispersion of tightly bound aggregates of nanosized spherical NDs with good interfacial interaction. Rheological measurements exhibited a step increment in the shear viscosity of a UP/ND suspension at 0.6 wt% ND resembling a percolation state at this loading. Shear viscosity data supported by dynamic mechanical analysis results suggested the development of effective ND particles in which ND aggregates were covered by only polyester macromolecules. Accordingly, the morphology of UP/ND composites...

    Rubber-toughened epoxies: A critical review

    , Article Polymer Reviews ; Volume 49, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 201-225 ; 15583724 (ISSN) Bagheri, R ; Marouf, B. T ; Pearson, R. A
    2009
    Abstract
Epoxy resins have been used as structural materials since the late 1940s. Despite their desirable properties such as high strength, excellent creep resistance, and good adhesion, they suffer from low fracture energy. Rubber modification as a major toughening approach to overcome the inherent brittleness of epoxy polymers was introduced during the early 1970s. Since then, a large number of investigations have been conducted to elucidate different aspects of rubber-toughened epoxies. The present work is a critical review of the field focusing on the important parameters affecting rubber-toughening. The studies reviewed are classified in five categories including roles of matrix ductility,...

Long-term mechanical performance of polyethylene pipe materials in presence of carbon black masterbatch with different carriers

    , Article Polymer Testing ; Volume 91 , 2020 Gholami, F ; Pircheraghi, G ; Sarafpour, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
In this paper, two types of carbon black (CB) masterbatch with different carriers, i.e. HDPE and LDPE, are used to produce black compounds using three PE100 resins with various short chain branching distributions. Due to difference in short chain branch (SCB) distribution, the used polyethylene resins behave differently in microstructure development and long-term creep behavior. The microstructural analysis using different DSC techniques and rheological measurements revealed more sensitivity of the polyethylene resin with uniform comonomer distribution to the carbon black aggregates and their polymeric carriers. The Full Notched Creep Test (FNCT) was performed to determine the long-term...

    Abstract
Understanding the roles of asphaltene and resin as natural surfactants existed in crude oil can enlighten contradicting reported results regarding interfacial tension (IFT) of crude oil/aqueous solution as a function of salinity and ion type. In this way, this study is aimed to investigate the effect of these natural surface active agents on IFT of with special focus on SO42− anion and Mg2+ cation. Two different synthetic oil solutions of 8 wt% of the extracted asphaltene and resin dissolved in toluene are prepared, and then IFT values are measured. After that, the obtained results are compared with the IFT of intact crude oil in contact with the same saline solutions examined in the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mehrabi, Fatemeh (Author) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Epoxy resins are relatively brittle and have low resistance to crack propagation. It is common to add rubber particles to improve crack resistance in epoxies, although these particles may deteriorate the strength of the matrix. Different nanomaterials are used to overcome the inherent brittleness of epoxies and to keep the mechanical properties. Among them, carbon nanotubes has been attracted many attentions. Fractue behavior and mechanical properties of two kind of novel nanocomposites, i.e, epoxy/carbon nanotube and epoxy/rubber/carbon nanotube are investigated in current study. Electron microscopy investigations were done to assure the CNTs distribution and fracture mechanisms as well....

Study the Toughening Mechanisms in Hybrid Epoxy/Rubber/CNT Nanocomposites

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jafari, Mohadeseh (Author) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor) ; Pircheraghi, Gholamreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Epoxy resins are used for a wide number of application due to good stiffness, chemical resistant and dimensional stability. This is the reason of their use as matrix in composite material. The incorporation of a small amount of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in epoxy increases mechanical properties if nanocomposite have strong interfacial interaction between epoxy and CNTs, fine dispersion of CNTs and high final aspect ratio CNTs. In Noncovalent functionalization by polymer surfactant, CNTs are dispersed in a solvent/surfactant solution by ultra-sonication and then added to epoxy. In this thesis a novel study of toughening and mechanical properties of epoxy/ rubber/ CNT nanocomposite is presented....

Also a pseudo-second order chemical reaction fairly fitted the kinetics data

Modeling of Yield Behavior of Rubber Modified Epoxies

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abbasi, Mohammad (Author) ; Kuchakzadeh, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Because of increasing usage of modified polymers and consequent necessity for investigation and modeling of mechanical behavior of these materials, it is important to get a yield criterion for these materials. For this purpose the Gurson yield criterion presented for porous metals, was modified with regard to mechanical properties of polymers. Indeed pressure sensitivity of polymers and their large elastic strain during deformation, makes using of Gurson yield criterion problematic for modified polymers.
For modification of Gurson criterion, macroscopic hydrostatic yield stress equation was derived for a thick-walled spherical shell of epoxy and then Gurson criterion was modified with...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aris, Atousa (Author) ; Shojaei, Akbar (Supervisor) ; Bagheri, Reza (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, it has been interesting to to use nanodiamond (ND) in oreder to improve mechanical and electrical properties. Producing it in very low dimensions, make it more important to treat ND surface proportional to its application. Hence, with knowledge of influence of ND and its functional groups on curing process, in present research, carboxylic acid and amine were settled on its surface and in addition to untreated ND, they were dispersed in DGEBA epoxy as a reinforcement. Afterward, by adding triethylenetetramine kinetic cure of nanocomposites were investigated. For this purpose, conversion was determined using heat flow of reaction and then activation energy was calculated....
