    Abstract
Novel organic-inorganic hybrid heterogeneous nanocatalysts were obtained by covalent anchoring of a molybdenum(vi) complex of salicylidene 2-picoloyl hydrazine, MoO2(sal-phz)(CH3OH), (1) on the surface of magnetic nanoparticles functionalized by one of two routes: in the first method, the surface of magnetic nanoparticles is directly modified with 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane yielding 1A. In the second method, magnetic nanoparticles were silica-coated with tetraethoxysilane and then with 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane yielding the intermediate 2B. Then complex 1 was grafted on the surface of 1A or 2B through covalent interaction yielding 2A or 3B, respectively. The nanocatalysts 2A and 3B...

    , Article Chemical Engineering Journal ; Vol. 250 , 2014 , Pages 35-41 ; ISSN: 13858947 Vafaeezadeh, M ; Hashemi, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A task-specific Brønsted acidic ionic liquid (BAIL), 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogensulfate ([BnMIm]HSO4), was prepared and confined onto the high surface area silica gel. The catalyst has shown extraordinary activity in comparison of homogeneous ionic liquid (IL) system for Fischer esterification of fatty acid with ethanol. The ester derivatives were synthesized in high yields and catalyst was easily separated from the reaction mixture by simple filtration. The structure of the catalyst is theoretically modelized to investigate the unusual catalytic activity. Hence, a hydroxylated cage-like nano-cluster, H6Si8O12(OH)2, was selected to mimic the surface of silica gel. The interactions...

Interaction of ionic liquids with the surface of silica gel using nanocluster approach: A combined density functional theory and experimental study

    , Article Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry ; Vol. 27, issue. 2 , 2014 , pp. 163-167 ; ISSN: 08943230 Vafaeezadeh, M ; Fattahi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Silica gel-confined ionic liquid (IL) is a class of heterogeneous catalysts with broad catalytic applications. Leaching of the IL from the surface of the support is the major drawback of these catalysts, which reduce the catalyst efficiency during the chemical reactions. To investigate the effect of the hydrogen bonding on the leaching phenomena, the interaction between the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium-based IL with various anions (Cl-, Br-, HSO4 -, NO3 -, BF 4 -, and PF6 -) and the surface of the silica gel were studied using density functional theory. Hence, a hydroxylated cage-like cluster of silica gel, Si4O6(OH), was selected to mimic the surface. The values of ÎEinteraction show that...

    Abstract
Exploring deprotonation properties of silica-functionalized propylsulfonic acid catalyst (silica-propyl-SO3H) is the subject of various experimental and theoretical researches. In the current study, the structure of the silica-propyl-SO3H has been simulated using density functional theory (DFT) methods by mimicking the surface of the silica in the form of cubic cage-like nanoclusters of silicon and oxygen. The values of ΔHacidity for gas-phase deprotonation are calculated considering various possible interactions of the propylsulfonic acid on the surface of the silica. Our investigations indicate that interactions of sulfonic acid (-SO3H) head...

    Abstract
This work develops a systematic uncertainty quantification framework to assess the reliability of prediction delivered by physics-based material models in the presence of incomplete measurement data and modeling error. The framework consists of global sensitivity analysis, Bayesian inference, and forward propagation of uncertainty through the computational model. The implementation of this framework on a new multiphase model of novel porous silica aerogel materials is demonstrated to predict the thermomechanical performances of a building envelope insulation component. The uncertainty analyses rely on sampling methods, including Markov-chain Monte Carlo and a mixed finite element solution of...

    Abstract
In this contribution, the effect of physical immobilization of methylene blue (MB) into silica nanocomposites was investigated on the conversion and selectivity of the photooxygenation of anthracene and dihydroartemisinic acid (DHAA). Physically immobilized photocatalysts were synthesized through a developed Stöber method and were thoroughly characterized by UV–Vis, FTIR, XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, HR-TEM, BET-BJH, and EDX analyses. Based on the TEM and UV–Vis results, it was determined that enhancement of the MB concentration as an organocatalyst for the Stöber reaction led to an increase in the size of the nanoparticles from 54 to 183 nm and a 21 nm blue shift in their UV–Vis spectra. Moreover,...
