    , Article Journal of Bioscience and Bioengineering ; Volume 93, Issue 2 , 2002 , Pages 125-129 ; 13891723 (ISSN) Kheirolomoom, A ; Khorasheh, F ; Fazelinia, H ; Sharif University of Technology
Society of Fermentation and Bioengineering  2002
    Abstract
Immobilization of enzymes on nonporous supports provides a suitable model for investigating the effect of external mass transfer limitation on the reaction rate in the absence of internal diffusional resistance. In this study, deacylation of penicillin G was investigated using penicillin acylase immobilized on ultrafine silica particles. Kinetic studies were performed within the low-substrate-concentration region, where the external mass transfer limitation becomes significant. To predict the apparent kinetic parameters and the overall effectiveness factor, knowledge of the external mass transfer coefficient, kLa, is necessary. Although various correlations exist for estimation of kLa, in...

    Abstract
A new, simple and sensitive method for the simultaneous determination of mercury(II) and methylmercury chloride at sub-ng 1-1 levels in river waters is described. Inorganic and organic mercury were preconcentrated from fresh water samples simultaneously on a laboratory-made column containing 2-mercaptobenzimidazol loaded on silica gel and then quantitatively eluted with 0.05 M KCN solution and 2.0 M HCl to desorp inorganic and methylmercury species, respectively. After irradiation with an intensive UV source, MeHg+ was decomposed and mercury vapours were generated from inorganic and organic mercury using an acidic SnCl2 solution in a continuous flow system and were subsequently determined...

Simultaneous preconcentration and speciation of iron(II) and iron(III) in water samples by 2-mercaptobenzimidazole-silica gel sorbent and flow injection analysis system

    , Article Analytica Chimica Acta ; Volume 424, Issue 2 , 2000 , Pages 233-242 ; 00032670 (ISSN) Bagheri, H ; Gholami, A ; Najafi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2000
    Abstract
2-Mercaptobenzimidazole, loaded on silica gel (MBI-SG) was used for preconcentration and speciation of iron(II) and iron(III) in water samples. The speciation is based upon selective retention of iron(III) on MBI-SG sorbent and quantitatively passing iron(II) ions. This type of sorbent was not only capable of separating theses two ions but also could concentrate them. The adsorbed iron(III) on MBI-SG was desorbed from the column by an SCN- solution and transferred to the detection device. The effluent, then, was treated with hydrogen peroxide to oxidize iron(II) into iron(III) and subsequently was pumped through the MBI-SG column. A home-made flow injection system was coupled with a UV-VIS...

    , Article Computers and Geosciences ; Volume 166 , 2022 ; 00983004 (ISSN) Khojastehmehr, M ; Bazargan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Understanding the chemistry of sandstone acidizing is important in designing an effective treatment for subsurface rock formations. The complex chemistry of sandstone systems leads to the precipitation of minerals that contribute to formation damage. Thus, monitoring the concentration and location of precipitates is necessary. In this work, a continuum-scale sequential implicit LEA/PLEA reactive transport model is developed and programmed through coupling OpenFOAM and Reaktoro to improve the model prediction. The proposed LEA/PLEA models are compared for core acidizing simulations at relatively high and low Damköhler numbers. We found that the common assumption of kinetically-controlled flow...

    Abstract
In drilling industry, energy consumption counts from 20 to 40 percent of total costs. Enhanced water-based mud (WBM) drilling fluids with nanoparticles can save energy in drilling processes. An in-house Taylor-Couette flow system (TCS) was developed at Australian University (AU) to study WBM enhanced by Al2O3, SiO2, and TiO2 nanoparticles. The TCS is really a practical tool to help well drillers with a rough idea of viscosity when nanoparticles are added. The TCS for sure cannot substitute advanced rheometry. The goal of the present experiment is to produce a rough estimate in field operation. Experimental results were examined with several rheology models in our previous publications. In...

    Abstract
Nowadays, the world is facing a shortage of fresh water. Utilizing adsorbent materials to adsorb air moisture is a suitable method for producing freshwater, especially combining the adsorption desalination system with solar energy devices such as solar collectors. The low temperature of solar collectors has caused some water to remain in the adsorbents in the desorption process and has reduced the possibility of using these systems. In this research, for the first time, an evacuated tube collector (ETC) is used as an adsorbent bed so that the temperature of the desorption process reaches higher values and as a result, more fresh water is expected to produced. In this study, two adsorption...

    Abstract
The carbon dioxide (CO2) separation can be enhanced by using modified materials like a deep eutectic solvent (DES) modified mesoporous silica SBA-15 in polymeric support i.e polysulfone via mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). The pure SBA-15 and DES are potential candidates for the CO2 capturing and their combination has not been reported yet. In this work, a fresh DES was synthesized by combining equal concentrations of Decanoic acid and choline chloride by mass. MMMs were fabricated by DES functionalized SBA-15 (DES-SBA) filler. The DES-SBA-based polymeric MMMs of different compositions, from 5% to 20% with the difference of five each, were developed and subjected to the gas permeation analysis...

    Abstract
The simultaneous control of the molecular weight, separation, and purification of polyvinyl acetate was achieved using a cobalt-mediated radical polymerization (CMRP) in a packed column with silica gel particles (PC-CMRP). The controlled radical polymerization of VAc in the packed columns was evaluated from the linear time dependence of Ln[M]0/[M], linear increase of molecular weight with the increase in conversion, and narrow molecular weight distribution. PC-CMRP method was used to produce high-purity polymers with controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution without requiring additional purification steps. The high ability of silica gel particles to adsorb free...

Improvement of nanosilica effects on the performance of mechanically processed styrene-butadiene rubber by rational hybridization with nanodiamond

    Abstract
Hybrid nanoparticle comprising of nanosilica (NS) and nanodiamond (ND), denoted by ND@NS, was synthesized by a two-step chemistry route and then incorporated into styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) at low concentrations up to 5 phr by a two-roll mill. Physical hybrids of NS and ND, i.e., ND&NS, with a weight ratio similar to chemical hybrid (80:20 for NS:ND), were also incorporated into SBR. Field emission scanning electron microscopy observations revealed very fine dispersion of nanoparticles in the case of physical hybrids (ND&NS). In contrast, agglomerations and aggregation of nanoparticles were evidenced for ND@NS. Tensile and dynamic mechanical analyses exhibited a higher reinforcing effect...

Syngas production through CO2 reforming of propane over highly active and stable mesoporous NiO-MgO-SiO2 catalysts: Effect of calcination temperature

    , Article Fuel ; Volume 322 , 2022 ; 00162361 (ISSN) Barzegari, F ; Kazemeini, M ; Rezaei, M ; Farhadi, F ; Keshavarz, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
In this contribution, NiO-MgO-SiO2 catalyst was prepared and calcined at different temperatures of 500, 600, 700 and 800 °C. The resulting samples were characterized by BET-BJH, XRD, TPX, CO-chemisorption, EDS and SEM analyses. These were employed toward syngas production via propane dry reforming. The increment in the calcination temperature from 500 to 800 °C decreased the basicity of the catalysts. In addition, the active surface area and Ni dispersion were gradually declined by increasing the calcination temperature from 600 to 700 °C due to active metal sintering during the activation process. The calcined sample at 600 °C displayed the highest propane and CO2 conversions of 93% and 78%...

    Abstract
Present work illustrated that the performance of ultrafine silica (Si) particles was improved considerably by rational hybridization with nanodiamond (ND). For this, Si@ND hybrid particles synthesized by chemical hybridization were incorporated into styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) up to 10 phr. Scanning electron microscopy revealed coarse flower-like clusters for Si@ND nanohybrids, while Si exhibited rigid agglomerates in SBR. Comparing with physical hybrid (Si&ND) and single Si particles, it was revealed that chemical hybrids synergistically improved tensile properties, like 100% and 135% improvements in tensile strength and elongation at break, respectively. Dynamic mechanical analysis of...

    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
Silica composite membranes and BaCe0.9Y0.1O3-δ (BCY) perovskite membranes were successfully synthesized to separate hydrogen in an equimolar mixture of H2, CH4, CO, and CO2 at temperature range of 500–900 °C and pressure difference of 1 bar. The phase structure of both membranes was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to evaluate phase stability of perovskite membrane. FESEM images confirmed graded structure of silica membrane and uniform, dense structure of perovskite membrane. H2 permeation in semi-dense silica layer deposited on alumina substrate indicated that permeation in top selective layer follows a diffusion mechanism which is based on...

Enhanced singlet oxygen production under nanoconfinement using silica nanocomposites towards improving the photooxygenation’s conversion

    Abstract
In this contribution, the effect of physical immobilization of methylene blue (MB) into silica nanocomposites was investigated on the conversion and selectivity of the photooxygenation of anthracene and dihydroartemisinic acid (DHAA). Physically immobilized photocatalysts were synthesized through a developed Stöber method and were thoroughly characterized by UV–Vis, FTIR, XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, HR-TEM, BET-BJH, and EDX analyses. Based on the TEM and UV–Vis results, it was determined that enhancement of the MB concentration as an organocatalyst for the Stöber reaction led to an increase in the size of the nanoparticles from 54 to 183 nm and a 21 nm blue shift in their UV–Vis spectra. Moreover,...
