    , Article Renewable Energy ; Volume 145 , 2020 , Pages 1255-1265 Esmaeli, H ; Roshandel, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Greenhouses require energy in order to provide a proper environment for crop production. Utilizing solar energy in solar greenhouses is a sustainable solution to face this problem. In this study, a solar greenhouse concept is considered, and a dynamic thermal model is developed to predict the inside air temperature. The model is integrated into an optimization procedure to find the optimal greenhouse design that has the best thermal performance by adjusting its structural parameters. This optimization procedure provides a tool to find the optimal solar greenhouse design for each climate condition and predict its performance. For instance, for the case study of Tehran (Iran), the optimal...

    Abstract
Modern sensors consist of arrays of detectors specially arranged to enhance precision, capabilities, and field of view (FOV). Sensor arrays can have multiple functionalities, such as the simultaneous detection of position and motion. We use a linear sensor model and develop an optimization method to design an array of photodiodes. Our objective function minimizes bias and variance estimations. We introduce a maximum likelihood technique to approximate and determine the bias caused by measurement errors, and verify our theory by statistically complete simulations. We apply our theory to design an optimal sun sensor. The sensor has a predefined conical FOV, and its accuracy is controlled by a...

    Abstract
Renewable energy (RE) as a new player in the generation sector of power systems imposes new challenges to the system operators. The intermittent nature of REs for systems where are autonomous calls for new operational and planning strategies to reach more efficient power management. An autonomous hybrid green power system (HGPS) should be able to meet the load while keeping the cost of the HGPS as low as possible. Many studies have presented different un-optimal and optimal operational strategies, a few of which were optimally sized. In this regard, this paper develops a new thorough framework for designing and optimizing an autonomous HGPS. To reach this goal, the proposed model (a)...

The developed model is used to investigate the effect of using PCMs with different melting points on the performance of the proposed system. It is demonstrated that the RT-50 provides superior performance among the studied...

In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive control scheme based on adaptive backstepping strategy is presented to control the operation of a grid-connected renewable DG unit. As compared to the popular vector control technique, the...

Moreover, photoluminescence, Mott–Schottkey, and photovoltaic characteristics such as IMPS/IMVS and charge extraction analysis indicated that the NTiO2 layer is an efficient scatterer in two aspects: enhancement of light-harvesting...

The results showed that the highest amount of exergy destruction was related to parabolic trough collectors (PTCs) and absorption chillers. To select the geothermal fluid of the organic Rankine cycle (ORC), several different fluids...

Modeling the time-dependent characteristics of perovskite solar cells

    , Article Solar Energy ; Volume 170 , 2018 , Pages 969-973 ; 0038092X (ISSN) Moeini, I ; Ahmadpour, M ; Mosavi, A ; Alharbi, N ; Gorji, N. E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We proposed two different time-dependent modeling approaches for variation of device characteristics of perovskite solar cells under stress conditions. The first approach follows Sah-Noyce-Shockley (SNS) model based on Shockley–Read–Hall recombination/generation across the depletion width of pn junction and the second approach is based on thermionic emission model for Schottky diodes. The connecting point of these approaches to time variation is the time-dependent defect generation in depletion width (W) of the junction. We have fitted the two models with experimental data reported in the literature to perovskite solar cell and found out that each model has a superior explanation for...

    Abstract
Nowadays, fossil fuel limitations and environmental concerns push researchers to find clean and renewable energy resources. Solar hydrogen production via water splitting reactions in electrochemical and/or photo-electrochemical systems has been accepted as a promising route and efficient electrocatalysts are involved in both. Here, cobalt nanoflakes with an oxide/hydroxide surface and a conductive metallic core are grown on commercially available steel mesh modified with carbon based nanocomposites as a support layer. The portion of reduced graphene oxide sheets was changed from 0 to 100 wt% and the correlation of this concentration with the surface morphology and electro-catalytic activity...

Mesoscopic oxide double layer as electron specific contact for highly efficient and UV stable perovskite photovoltaics

    , Article Nano Letters ; Volume 18, Issue 4 , 2018 , Pages 2428-2434 ; 15306984 (ISSN) Tavakoli, M. M ; Giordano, F ; Zakeeruddin, S. M ; Gratzel, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The solar to electric power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has recently reached 22.7%, exceeding that of competing thin film photovoltaics and the market leader polycrystalline silicon. Further augmentation of the PCE toward the Shockley-Queisser limit of 33.5% warrants suppression of radiationless carrier recombination by judicious engineering of the interface between the light harvesting perovskite and the charge carrier extraction layers. Here, we introduce a mesoscopic oxide double layer as electron selective contact consisting of a scaffold of TiO2 nanoparticles covered by a thin film of SnO2, either in amorphous (a-SnO2), crystalline (c-SnO2), or...

    Abstract
The fabrication of high performance, solution-processed CIGS family solar cells is based on high-temperature crystallization processes in chalcogen-containing atmosphere and/or using dangerous solvents like hydrazine. The non-hydrazine sulfurization- and selenization-free reports typically suffer from poor grain structures. We report a facile strategy to overcome grain growth limitations at very low temperature processing (250 °C). Selenium free Superstrate configuration CuInS2 (CIS) solar cells are fabricated using a nanocrystals ink which avoiding from high temperature selenization or/and sulfurization is targeted. We investigated the effect of intentional M doping (M = Sb, Zn, Cd and Sn)...

    Abstract
Isolated microgrids depend mainly on diesel generation and have polluting transportation. This is being addressed by the introduction of renewable energy resources and electric vehicles (EVs). Hence, this paper presents a novel long-term planning model for the introduction of EVs in isolated microgrids. This work studies the replacement of internal combustion vehicles with electric ones by analyzing their respective investment, maintenance and operation costs. Various case studies are discussed, considering different EV and solar photovoltaic (PV) penetration levels, and varying prices of diesel in the planning horizon. Results demonstrate that investing in EVs could significantly reduce net...
