    Abstract
    Tolerance allocation in the recent mechanical assembly is significant because it straightly affects product performance and cost. Loose tolerances may cause the quality defect while tight tolerances can increase the cost. Thermal effects and the temperature gradients are one of the factors that caused changes in the size and geometry of the components during the performance of mechanical assemblies. This thesis proposes a new approach for tolerance design considering the thermal effects, to achieve lower manufacturing cost and good product quality.     Accurate description of kinematics of continuum mechanics is essential in simulation of large deformation problems in solid mechanics. From the numerical viewpoint, two main approaches have been used for such description; the Lagrangian approach and the Eulerian approach. However, each of these approaches suffer from shortcomings which hinders their application in large deformation problems. A more general approach called the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method (ALE) provides an opportunity to exploit the advantages of both Lagrangian and Eulerian approach, while avoiding their shortcoming.     This note considers the effect of different Darcy numbers on the onset of natural convection in a horizontal, fluid-saturated porous layer with uniform internal heating. It is assumed that the two bounding surfaces are maintained at constant but equal temperatures and that the fluid and porous matrix are in local thermal equilibrium. Linear stability theory is applied to the problem, and numerical solutions obtained using compact fourth order finite differences are presented for all Darcy numbers between Da = 0 (Darcian porous medium) and Da → ∞ (the clear fluid limit).     Abstract
    In this paper, an Al-Mg-Si-Cu aluminum alloy was exposed to various heat treatment processes and the effect of precipitation hardening on hardness was investigated as a function of time and temperature. It was concluded that the variation in time and temperature can improve the hardness of the alloy. The work revealed that time and temperature play an important role in the precipitation hardening process of the alloy. To achieve the maximum hardness, an optimum aging cycle should be used which is heating at 180-190 °C for 15-18 h. Kinetics studies show an apparent activation energy of 58 kJ/mol.     Abstract
    An efficient numerical method for simulation of casting solidification is presented. The presented method is based on a stable explicit finite difference solution of the heat equation in conjunction with the temperature recovery method to incorporate latent heat effect. The computational cost of the presented method is approximately the same as an explicit method (per time step), while it is free from the time step limitation due to the stability criterion. A simple domain decomposition method is included to improve the computational performance of the presented method.     Inverse method and artificial neural network were employed in modeling the rheological behavior of the AZ61 Mg alloy. The hot deformation behavior of these alloys was investigated by compression tests in the temperature range 250-350 °C and strain rate range 0.0005-0.1 s-1. Investigation of stress-strain curves and microstructure of the compression specimen illustrate occurrence of dynamic recrystallization.     Abstract
    In this study, strain ageing during and after warm rolling of a carbon steel has been investigated. At the first step, the occurrence of serrated flow was studied by means of tensile tests at different temperatures and strain rates. In the next stage, warm rolling experiments were performed under different rolling conditions and then the samples were aged at the room temperature for a period of 3 months. For both aged and non-aged samples, tensile tests were employed to evaluate their mechanical properties.     High bainite dual phase steel has been subjected to tension test at different temperatures from 25 to 500 °C with strain rate of 4.6 × 10-4 s-1 to investigate the effect of temperature on its mechanical properties. Stress-strain curves of steels showed serration flow at temperature range of 200-350 °C and smooth flow at the other temperatures.     Microbial EOR (MEOR) is receiving renewed interest worldwide. The method is based on microorganisms' activities to reduce residual oil of reservoirs, which is dependent on behavior of inherent microorganisms or injection of bioproduct of external microorganisms. Five bacterial species were taken from MIS crude oil that is one of the aging Persian fractured reservoirs. Visualization experiments were carried out to examine the behavior of MEOR in micromodels designed to resemble the fractured system: static and dynamic.     A modified mixed oxide method which is based on a two step reaction sintering process was designed to obtain single phase PMN ceramics. In this regard, pyrochlore phase formation during calcination process at different calcination temperatures was studied to determine the best soaking temperature for the first step in the specified method. In other words, the calcination temperature in which the least pyrochlore phase produced was chosen as the first step soaking temperature.     We examine the effect of local thermal non-equilibrium on the steady state heat conduction in a porous layer in the presence of internal heat generation. A uniform source of heat is present in either the fluid or the solid phase. A two-temperature model is assumed and analytical solutions are presented for the resulting steady-state temperature profiles in a uniform porous slab.     Free vibration analysis of simply supported FG cylindrical shells for four sets of in-plane boundary conditions is performed. The material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependant and gradually changed in the thickness direction of the shell. The effects of temperature rise are investigated by specifying arbitrary high temperature on the outer surface and the ambient temperature on the inner surface of the cylinder.     Abstract
    The hot deformation behavior of A-286 superalloy has been characterized using hot compression experiments in the temperatures between 1000 and 1100 °C and strain rates varying between 0.001 and 0.1 s-1. In addition, hot workability of this alloy has been analyzed by employing flow-localization parameter. The results show that both kinds of softening mechanism, dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization, occur during hot working, where at 1000 °C the main mechanism is dynamic recovery and at higher temperatures and strain rate of 0.001-0.01 s-1 dynamic recrystallization takes place.     In the present work, the sintering behavior of high strength Al-5.6Zn-2.5Mg-1.6Cu (in wt.%) alloy compacts was investigated.     In this research, low density polyethylene (LDPE) and poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) were used as polymeric materials. The methods used to produce LDPE and EVA was film blowing and thermal-dry phase inversion. The amount of permeability, diffusivity and solubility of O2 and CO2 through above polymers were obtained and also the effect of temperature, pressure and film thickness for LDPE was measured.     Results of recent studies on the effect of heat treatment after cold rolling on mechanical properties and transformation temperatures of the cast 52Ni48Ti alloys are described. It is seen that stress-induced martensite is formed when both the as-rolled and the low-temperature (≤400 °C) heat-treated samples are strained. Martensite reorientation due to the stress action occurs in samples heat treated at 500 °C and higher. Optimum recovery occurs below 600 °C resulting in hardness reduction. Recrystallization starts at 600 °C resulting in parent phase yield stress enhancement.
