American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)  2019
    Abstract
In this study, a theoretical analysis is performed to assess the interaction of freestream disturbances with a plane normal shock considering real gas effects. Such effects are important in a field with high velocities and high temperatures. To perform the theoretical analysis, the downstream disturbances field is expressed as a mathematical function of the upstream one by incorporating real gas effects in the formulation. Here, the linearized one-dimensional perturbed unsteady Euler equations are used for the classification of the downstream/upstream disturbances field and the linearized one-dimensional perturbed Rankine-Hugoniot equations are applied to provide a relationship between the...

    , Article Physica E: Low-Dimensional Systems and Nanostructures ; Volume 40, Issue 9 , August , 2008 , Pages 2965-2972 ; 13869477 (ISSN) Aghaie, H ; Gholami, M. R ; Monajjemi, M ; Ganji, M. D ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
The electron transport characteristics of a 1,10-dimethylene-1,10-dicarba-closo-decaborane (10-vertex carborane) single molecular conductor is investigated via the density functional-based non-equilibrium Green's function (DFT-NEGF) method. We consider three configurations for the molecular wire sandwiched between two Au(1 0 0) electrodes: the hollow site, top site and bridge site positions. Our results show that the energetically favorable hollow site configuration has a higher current intensity than the other configurations. The projection of the density of states (PDOS) and the transmission coefficients T(E) of the two-probe system at zero bias are analyzed, and it suggests that the...

Direct Discrete Method (DDM) and its application to neutron transport problems

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 14, Issue 1 , 2007 , Pages 78-85 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Vosoughi, N ; Salehi, A. A ; Shahriari, M ; Heshmatzadeh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2007
    Abstract
The objective of this paper is to introduce a new direct method for neutronic calculations. This method, called Direct Discrete Method (DDM), is simpler than the Neutron Transport Equation and more compatible with the physical meanings of the problem. The method, based on the physics of the problem, initially-runs through meshing of the desired geometry. Next, the balance equation for each mesh interval is written. Considering the connection between the mesh intervals, the final discrete equation series are directly obtained without the need to first pass through the set-up of the neutron transport differential equation. In this paper, a single and multigroup neutron transport discrete...

Investigation of a two impinging-jets contacting device for liquid-liquid extraction processes

    , Article Chemical Engineering Science ; Volume 61, Issue 12 , 2006 , Pages 3942-3950 ; 00092509 (ISSN) Saien, J ; Ebrahimzadeh Zonouzian, S. A. R ; Molaei Dehkordi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2006
    Abstract
A two impinging-jets contacting device (TIJCD) for liquid-liquid extraction processes was proposed and tested through the standard test system recommended by the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE), toluene-acetone-water, as a typical example of liquid-liquid extraction processes. The results obtained for the overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient (capacity coefficient) were more than three times higher than those reported in the conventional contactors and in an air-driven two impinging-streams contactor. These experimental results clearly indicate the greater performance capability of TIJCD relative to those of conventional contactors. To have a perfect study on the...

Effect of Pr doping on transport properties of Nd(Ba2-xPr x)Cu3O7+8

, Article Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, Part 1: Regular Papers and Short Notes and Review Papers ; Volume 44, Issue 11 , 2005 , Pages 7934-7942 ; 00214922 (ISSN) Maleki, P ; Akhavan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
Solid-state-reacted polycrystalline Nd(Ba2-xPr x)Cu3O7+8 materials have been prepared and investigated using X-ray diffraction and resistivity measurements. Our results show that Nd(Ba2-xPrx)Cu3O7+8 is a superconductor when x < 0.3. The Tc depression in superconductivity of Pr at Ba sites is due to both hole filling/localization and depairing effects. The normal state conductivity undergoes a dimensional crossover from two-dimensional to three-dimensional in the frame of the variable range hopping regime. The localization length of carriers shows that Pr doping localizes carriers in the normal state and causes the Tc depression. The magnetoresistance of the samples has been investigated...

    Abstract
Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have shown rapid progress in a decade of extensive research and development, aiming now towards commercialization. However, the development of more facile, reliable, and reproducible manufacturing techniques will be essential for industrial production. Many lamination methods have been initially designed for organic photovoltaics (OPVs), which are conceptually similar to PSCs. Lamination could provide a low-cost and adaptable technique for the roll-to-roll production of solar cells. This review presents an overview of lamination methods for the fabrication of PSCs and OPVs. The lamination of different electrodes consisting of various materials such as metal back...

Extreme light absorption in a necking-free monolayer of resonant-size nanoparticles for photoelectrochemical cells

    , Article Journal of Optics (United Kingdom) ; Vol. 16, issue. 7 , 2014 ; ISSN: 20408978 Dabirian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Semiconductor photoelectrodes for water oxidation that absorb visible light usually have poor electronic transport properties and small optical absorption coefficients near their absorption edge. Therefore, innovative designs that lead to significant optical absorption in relatively thin layers of these compounds are highly desirable. Here, using full-field electromagnetic optical simulations, we demonstrate that a monolayer of resonant-size BiVO4 spheres can provide enhancement up to a factor of two in solar light absorption relative to dense planar layers. In this monolayer, BiVO4 spheres do not need to be interconnected; therefore, such monolayers are flexible and their fabrication...

Electronic and transport properties of monolayer graphene defected by one and two carbon ad-dimers

    , Article Applied Physics A: Materials Science and Processing ; Vol. 116, issue. 4 , 2014 , p. 2057-2063 Fotoohi, S ; Moravvej-Farshi, M. K ; Faez, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Using density functional theory combined with non-equilibrium Green's function method, we have investigated the electronic and transport properties of graphenes defected by one and two carbon ad-dimers (CADs), placed parallel to the graphene lattice. Addition of these CADs to graphenes creates 3D paired pentagon-heptagon defects (3D-PPHDs). The band structure, density of states (DOS), quantum conductance, projected DOS, as well as the current-voltage characteristic per graphene super-cells containing each type of 3D-PPHD are calculated. The local strain introduced to graphene by 3D-PPHDs forces the C-bonds in the dimers to hybridize in sp 3-like rather than sp 2-like orbitals, creating...

Theoretical-experimental investigation of Co emission from an oil refinery incinerator

    , Article American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Fluids Engineering Division (Publication) FEDSM ; Vol. 1C, issue , 2014 Darbandi, M ; Abrar, B ; Yazdi, M. K ; Zeinali, M ; Schneider, G. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we investigate the CO emission from an oil refinery gas incinerator both theoretically and experimentally. At the beginning of this research, our collected data from this incinerator showed that the CO contamination would be far exceeding the permissible environmental standards at the stack exhaust. Therefore, we decided to perform a combined theoretical-experimental study to find a reasonable solution to reduce the CO pollution suitably. Our theoretical study showed that a reliable solution would be to increase the incinerator operating temperature. However, we needed to collect some data from this incinerator to examine if our achieved analytical solution would work...

Peculiar transport properties in Z-shaped graphene nanoribbons: A nanoscale NOR gate

    , Article Thin Solid Films ; Volume 548 , 2013 , Pages 443-448 ; 00406090 (ISSN) Khoeini, F ; Khoeini, F ; Shokri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
A nanoscale logic NOR gate has been theoretically designed by magnetic flux inputs in a Z-shaped graphene nanoribbon composed of an armchair ribbon device sandwiched between two semi-infinite metallic zigzag ribbon leads. The calculations are based on the tight-binding model and iterative Green's function method, in which the conductance as well as current-voltage characteristics of the nanosystem are calculated, numerically. We show that the current and conductance are highly sensitive to both the magnetic fluxes subject to the device and the size of the system. Our results may have important applications for building blocks in the nanoelectronic devices based on graphene nanoribbons

    Abstract
Abstract: A novel simple synthetic procedure for improving cell efficiency and reducing the production cost of TiO2 dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) by modification and optimization of homemade formulated paste is reported. This is achieved in terms of morphological manipulation of deposited monolayer TiO2 films by controlling three processing parameters of paste formulation. These parameters are tailored to obtain a paste with proper viscosity suitable for spin-coating technique and to achieve uniform, homogeneous, and crack-free films with good connections between TiO2 grains and porous structure. Photovoltaic measurements show that TiO2...

    , Article Physics of Fluids ; Volume 29, Issue 12 , 2017 ; 10706631 (ISSN) Jafari, I ; Masihi, M ; Nasiri Zarandi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, the effect of different parameters on the fluid transport in a fractured micromodel has been investigated. All experiments in this study have been conducted in a glass micromodel. Since the state of wetting is important in the micromodel, the wetting experiments have been conducted to determine the state of wetting in the micromodel. The used micromodel was wet by water and non-wet regarding normal decane. The fracture network, distribution of pore size, matrix construction, and injection rate are the most important parameters affecting the process. Therefore, the influence of these parameters was studied using five different patterns (A to E). The obtained results from...

Fluid slosh dynamics is included using multi-mass-spring model. According to derived model, a proper control law is designed for a system with three or more quadrotors. Implementing the proposed control law, quadrotors can control pose of the container, directions of the links and liquid sloshing modes simultaneously....

Hydrodynamic dispersion by electroosmotic flow of viscoelastic fluids within a slit microchannel

    , Article Microfluidics and Nanofluidics ; Volume 22, Issue 1 , January , 2018 ; 16134982 (ISSN) Hoshyargar, V ; Talebi, M ; Ashrafizadeh, S. N ; Sadeghi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The biofluids being manipulated in lab-on-a-chip devices usually contain elastic macromolecules. Accordingly, for an accurate modeling of the relevant flow physics one should invoke viscoelastic constitutive equations. In this paper, attention is paid toward the hydrodynamic dispersion by the fully developed electroosmotic flow of PTT viscoelastic fluids in slit microchannels of low zeta potential. Adopting the Taylor–Aris approach, analytical solutions are derived for late-time solute concentration and effective dispersion coefficient. Finite element-based numerical simulations are also conducted to monitor the broadening of an analyte band from the moment of injection. Both approaches are...

The effect of particle size on the structural, magnetic and electrical properties of La0.9Ba0.1MNO3 manganite samples

    , Article Phase Transitions ; Volume 92, Issue 11 , 2019 , Pages 949-959 ; 01411594 (ISSN) Shogh, S ; Eshraghi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2019
    Abstract
In this work, the magnetic and transport properties of micro and nanometer-sized samples of La0.9Ba0.1MnO3 manganite have been studied. The temperature variation of ac susceptibility of the nanometer-sized sample shows one transition at high temperature (265 K). On the contrary, the ac susceptibility of the micrometer-sized sample shows two transitions with a high-temperature transition occurring at 240 K and low-temperature transition around 100 K. The high-temperature transition corresponds to the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic (PM–FM) transition (Tc) and is independent of frequency, while the low-temperature transition is frequency-dependent and shifts toward high temperatures by increasing...

A new approach for solution of time dependent neutron transport equation based on nodal discretization using MCNPX code with feedback

    , Article Annals of Nuclear Energy ; Volume 133 , 2019 , Pages 519-526 ; 03064549 (ISSN) Ghaderi Mazaher, M ; Salehi, A. A ; Vosoughi, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper proposes a new method for solving the time-dependent neutron transport equation based on nodal discretization using the MCNPX code. Most valid nodal codes are based on the diffusion theory with differences in approximating the leakage term until now. However, the Monte Carlo (MC) method is able to estimate transport parameters without approximations usual in diffusion method. Therefore, improving the nodal approach via the MC techniques can substantially reduce the errors caused by diffusion approximations. In the proposed method, the reactor core is divided into nodes of arbitrary dimensions, and all terms of the transport equation e.g. interaction rates and leakage ratio are...
