    Abstract
A very simple and well-controlled procedure was employed to prepare CdS nanoparticle/few-layer MoS2 nanosheet/Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin film heterostructures. To tune and fabricate the CdS/MoS2(t)/ITO thin films with various surface topographies, first electrophoretic deposition (EPD) was used to deposit MoS2 nanosheets on the ITO substrate under an optimized applied potential difference (8 V) for different deposition times (t) of 30, 60, 120 and 240 s. Then, CdS nanoparticles were deposited via a successive ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique. The highest photo-current density of 285 μA cm-2 was measured for the CdS/MoS2(60 s)/ITO sample, which was about 2.3 times higher...

Water retention and volumetric characteristics of intact and re-compacted loess

    , Article Canadian Geotechnical Journal ; Volume 53, Issue 8 , 2016 , Pages 1258-1269 ; 00083674 (ISSN) Wang Wai Ng, C ; Sadeghi, H ; Belal Hossen, S. K ; Chiu, C. F ; Alonso, E. E ; Baghbanrezvan, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Alaboratory testing program was conducted to investigate the effects of microstructure on the water retention curve (WRC) and wetting-drying induced volume change in loess. The axis translation and vapor equilibrium techniques were adopted to control suction in the range of 0-400 kPa and 4-140 MPa, respectively. Hysteresis in the WRC of loess was observed for the entire range of suction studied. Compared to re-compacted loess, intact loess exhibits a more pronounced hysteresis in the suction range below 20 kPa, which can be explained by the ink-bottle pore neck effect or constricted pores. The hypothesis is supported by microstructural evidence of mercury intrusion porosimetry and scanning...

    Abstract
Wettability alteration in porous media is one of the mechanisms for enhancing oil recovery through injecting low-salinity water into carbonate reservoirs, in which active ions can remove the carboxylic oil component from the rock surface, altering the rock's wettability toward a water-wet condition. This study investigated the concomitant effects of low-salinity water and hydrophilic SiO2 nanoparticles on oil-wet dolomite rock. Results revealed that low-salinity water coupled with hydrophilic nano-SiO2 in oil-wet dolomite rock remarkably affected the wettability alteration of the rock, showing that the simultaneous presence of ions in water and hydrophilic nano-SiO2 led to considerable...

    Abstract
A silicon carbide coating was formed on the surface of graphite flakes by reaction of molten Si with carbon at 1100-1300. °C in a 95%KCl-5%NaF molten salt under Ar atmosphere. The effect of temperature and Si/graphite ratio in the initial mixture on the quality and the amount of SiC were investigated by XRD and SEM/EDS analyses. Also, the water wettability, oxidation resistance and zeta potential of un-coated and coated graphite were examined by TGA analysis and sedimentation test. The results show the amount of coating to increase in the coated flakes with increasing temperature and Si/graphite ratio. The SiC coating improves water wettability of graphite and acts as a protective layer to...

    , Article Journal of Molecular Liquids ; Volume 216 , 2016 , Pages 377-386 ; 01677322 (ISSN) Lashkarbolooki, M ; Riazi, M ; Hajibagheri, F ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The impacts of salinity adjustment of displacing fluid have recently gained special attention to enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Different mechanisms have been studied widely in the literature while some of them are still subjugated to more scrutiny. The effects of diluted sea water on the interfacial properties of brine and asphaltenic-acidic crude oil and the wettability alteration of carbonate reservoir rock are investigated in this experimental observational work. The measurements of interfacial tension (IFT) and contact angle (CA) as two main parameters are studied. Besides, the effects of asphaltene and resin in the crude oil on the IFT values between the crude oil and aqueous solution...

    , Article Physics of Fluids ; Volume 29, Issue 12 , 2017 ; 10706631 (ISSN) Jafari, I ; Masihi, M ; Nasiri Zarandi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, the effect of different parameters on the fluid transport in a fractured micromodel has been investigated. All experiments in this study have been conducted in a glass micromodel. Since the state of wetting is important in the micromodel, the wetting experiments have been conducted to determine the state of wetting in the micromodel. The used micromodel was wet by water and non-wet regarding normal decane. The fracture network, distribution of pore size, matrix construction, and injection rate are the most important parameters affecting the process. Therefore, the influence of these parameters was studied using five different patterns (A to E). The obtained results from...

To determine the structure and morphology of the prepared catalysts, they were characterized by the XRD, FESEM, BET, and basic strength measurements. Under optimum reaction conditions of methanol/oil molar ratio of 15:1, 5 wt% catalyst at 65 °C, 96.3% conversion was obtained in 2.5 h of reaction duration. Moreover, the catalyst demonstrated a rather high stability where reuse of up to five cycles without significant loss of performance observed. © 2016 The Korean Society of...

Experimental investigation of inorganic scale deposition during smart water injection - A formation damage point of view

    , Article IOR NORWAY 2017 - 19th European Symposium on Improved Oil Recovery: Sustainable IOR in a Low Oil Price World, 24 April 2017 through 27 April 2017 ; 2017 ; 9789462822092 (ISBN) Ghasemian, J ; Mokhtari, R ; Ayatollahi, S ; Riahi, S ; Malekzade, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Smart water injection is determined as an effective EOR process to change the wettability and interfacial tension for better micro/macro sweep efficiencies. This water contains reactive ions such as Mg ∧(2+), Ca ∧(2+) and SO-4 ∧(2-) which can act as potential determining ions and change the surface charge of calcite rocks. One of the major concerns in the execution of an effective waterflood, especially in tight carbonate reservoirs, is the incompatibility between the formation brine and the injecting water. This research work aims to investigate the most important challenge of waterflooding process related to the possible formation damage because of inorganic scale deposition during...

Dynamic response of a flat plate subjected to compression force during vertical and oblique impacts with calm water

    , Article Engineering Structures ; Volume 176 , 2018 , Pages 697-706 ; 01410296 (ISSN) Moradi, H ; Rahbar Ranji, A ; Haddadpour, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
An existing hydroelastic model is extended for a flat plate subjected to a compression force with spiral spring boundary conditions during water entry. Both vertical and oblique impacts of the plate into calm water are investigated. A longitudinal strip of the plate is analyzed by fully coupling hydrodynamic pressure with elastic responses. Hydrodynamic pressure is determined by potential flow theory and plate deflections are expressed in terms of dry normal modes. The plate deflections are validated through comparison with available asymptotic models, semi-analytical and experimental results. The effect of compression force on the plate deflection is investigated at the midpoint considering...

Surface wettability effect on the rising of a bubble attached to a vertical wall

    , Article International Journal of Multiphase Flow ; Volume 109 , 2018 , Pages 178-190 ; 03019322 (ISSN) Javadi, K ; Davoudian, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper deals with the dynamics of rising bubbles attached to a vertical wall under different wettability conditions. Even though, bubbles rising freely in a liquid have extensively been studied, bubbles attached to a wall have not been fully understood. Therefore, in this work, rising bubbles attached to a vertical wall were numerically investigated by applying the ALE method along with adaptive mesh refinement schemes to properly resolve the bubble interface and its deformation. To consider wall wettability effects, different contact angles of 45° 90° and 105° were considered along with the case of freely rising bubbles. The problem was carried out at different Bond numbers of 0.27,...

In addition, the performance of the prepared membranes was investigated in terms of basic parameters: filtrate water flux, nitrate removal efficiency, and antifouling properties. Results showed significant improvements of the characteristics of modified...

Investigating the synergic effects of chemical surfactant (SDBS) and biosurfactant produced by bacterium (Enterobacter cloacae) on IFT reduction and wettability alteration during MEOR process

    , Article Journal of Molecular Liquids ; Volume 256 , 2018 , Pages 277-285 ; 01677322 (ISSN) Hajibagheri, F ; Hashemi, A ; Lashkarbolooki, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2018
    Abstract
In the current study, a novel approach which takes into account the effectiveness of both convectional surfactants and biosurfactants was investigated. The biosurfactant produced by Enterobacter cloacae strain was utilized concomitant with conventional surfactant (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS)) to evaluate its capability to reduce the SDBS adsorption on rock surface (biosurfactant acts as sacrificial agent) or synergistically enhance the effectiveness of the SDBS. In this regard, the wettability alteration and interfacial tension (IFT) measurements and calculation of spreading coefficient were performed considering two different scenarios. In the first scenario, SDBS was added to...

Impact of hydraulic hysteresis on the small strain shear modulus of unsaturated sand

    , Article Soils and Foundations ; Volume 58, Issue 2 , 2018 , Pages 344-354 ; 00380806 (ISSN) Khosravi, A ; Shahbazan, P ; Pak, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Japanese Geotechnical Society  2018
    Abstract
The results of previous studies on silt and clay indicated that variations in the small strain shear modulus, Gmax, during hydraulic hysteresis had a non-linear increasing trend with matric suction, with greater values upon wetting. However, due to differences in material properties and inter-particle forces, a different behavior is expected for the Gmax of unsaturated sand. Although considerable research has been devoted in recent years to characterizing the behavior of the Gmax of sand during drying, less attention has been paid to the effect of hydraulic hysteresis on Gmax and its variations during wetting. In the study presented herein, an effective stress-based semi-empirical model was...

Application of a free volume model in correlating thermodynamic properties of β-lactam, tetracycline, fluoroquinolone and chloramphenicol antibiotic groups in associating fluids

    , Article Chemical Engineering Research and Design ; Volume 87, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 335-342 ; 02638762 (ISSN) Pazuki, G. R ; Taghikhani, V ; Vossoughi, M ; Alemzadeh, I ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this work, an expression for the free volume Gibbs energy model based on the local composition concept (LCC) has been proposed in correlating the solubility, the partitioning and the surface tension of β-lactam, tetracycline, fluoroquinolone and chloramphenicol antibiotic groups in water, alcohol, ketone, trihalomethane, ether and ester solvent groups. Similar to the LCC models the proposed model has two combinatorial and residual terms. The extended Guggenheim model is used as combinatorial term and a new local composition-based model, which is the extended local area fraction NRTL-NRF model, is proposed for the residual term. The results obtained from the proposed model have been...

An atomistic insight into the implications of ion-tuned water injection in wetting preferences of carbonate reservoirs

    , Article Journal of Molecular Liquids ; Volume 293 , 2019 ; 01677322 (ISSN) Koleini, M.M ; Badizad, M. H ; Ghatee, M. H ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The efficiency of water flooding methods is known to improve by applying ion-tuned water injection. Although there is a consensus that such improvement happens through reversing reservoir wettability characteristics to more water-wet state, the true impact of ions is still ambiguous among contradictory debates. The well-known molecular dynamics (MD) simulation techniques would shed light on such ambiguities to gain deep atomic-scale understanding of the process. Results from MD simulations show that the presence of Na+ and Cl¯ ions leads to the formation of an electrical double layer in adjacency of calcite surface while Mg2+ ions dominantly make complexes with hydrocarbons throughout the...

Wettability alteration of oil-wet carbonate porous media using silica nanoparticles: Electrokinetic characterization

    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 58, Issue 40 , 2019 , Pages 18601-18612 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Dehghan Monfared, A ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Application of nanoparticles for wettability alteration offers a practical approach to resolve some surface-related problems encountered in the nowadays technological process. Examples are underground/subsurface engineering implications, including the enhanced oil recovery from the oil-wet carbonate reservoirs. However, the common wettability evaluating techniques such as contact angle and flotation cannot be representative of the dynamic phenomena occurring at the pore scale and hence are unable to give accurate information about the process. Therefore, in the present work, the electrokinetic evaluations are utilized to explore the wettability alteration of initially oil-wet carbonate rock...

    Abstract
A novel nebulizing spray hydrolysis approach was used for preparation of semi-transparent superhydrophobic coatings. Methyltrimethoxysilane was dissolved in water:ethanol mixture and ultrasonically sprayed on different substrates. Superhydrophobic coatings with a contact angle (CA) as high as 164° and a sliding angle below 5° were obtained. FESEM and AFM revealed a hierarchical micro-nano binary structure with nanometric roughness of the coatings. The coated glass substrate exhibited transmittance close to 80%. The prepared coating showed great self-cleaning and water jet repellency behaviors. The superhydrophobicity of the samples was remained after subjecting to ambient conditions for 50...

Interactions between Rock/Brine and Oil/Brine interfaces within thin brine film wetting carbonates: A molecular dynamics simulation study

    Abstract
The thin brine film that wets rock surfaces governs the wettability of underground reservoirs. The ionic composition and salinity of this nanosized brine film influence the wetting preference of the rock pore space occupied by hydrocarbons. Despite numerous investigations over the last decades, a unanimous fundamental understanding that concerns the contribution of ions in the original wetting state of the reservoir is lacking and hence the mechanisms responsible for the wettability reversal of the mineral are still unclear. This wettability reversal is the main consequence of ion-Tuned waterflooding. Although the method is widely accepted in practice, there is no universal consensus on the...
