Application of Titania Nanoparticles for Lichen Removal from Ancient Stone Surface (Case Study: Takhte Jamshid)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Hossein (Author) ; Khorasheh, Farhad (Supervisor) ; Sohrabi, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Ghobadnezhd, Masumeh (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Iran is one of the richest historic countries in the world, as extention of cultural heritage and historic building is unique. Infestation of lichens to those heritages for doing strategic actions wants the coordination of systems and organizations and universities. All the actions that do in this field, about the conservation and preservation of heritage made by stone related to architecture, be limited to lasers, electromagnetic waves, and application of jet methods such as sand storm, water jet, and prior to this mechanical and handful methods that approximately all be destructive. Application of nanoparticles of titania, as a smart photocatalytic material with antimicrobial and...

A Framework to Select the Appropriate Combination of Retrofit and Insurance in Order to Reduce Earthquake Losses

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khalifeloo, Mohammad (Author) ; Haj Kazem Kashani, Hamed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The aim of this research is presentation of A framework to select the appropriate combination of retrofit and insurance in order to reduce earthquake losses. The vulnerability of buildings to earthquakes can lead to significant damage to owners and residents of these buildings. It is imperative that appropriate measures be taken to reduce these adverse effects before the risk occurs. Some of these measures, such as seismic retrofit of buildings, can reduce the vulnerability of buildings and, consequently, financial and human losses. Some other measures like insurance, in the event of an earthquake, can reduce the financial losses incurred by owners and residents of vulnerable buildings....

Development of a Water and Energy Management Tool to Retrofit the Crude Oil Distillation Unit of a Refinery

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Charkhestani, Saeed (Author) ; Avami, Akram (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The aim of this research is retrofit of a crude oil distillation refinery unit in terms of water and energy. To do this, the refinery distillation unit is ategorized to different zones from the perspective of water and energy to determine the saving potentials. The energy network consists of the four sub-types includes exchangers and the water network consist of seven sub-sets including water and steam. In the next stage, the retrofit of the energy network and the process heat exchangers are done by using pinch analysis in the commercial software and discussed the economical possibility of pinch analysis for 20 heat exchangers in the crude oil preheating unit. Using the flow of flashed crude...

Shake Table Test on Masonry Structures Retrofitted by Shotcrete

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghezelbash, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Mohtasham Dolatshahi, Kiarash (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In order to investigate the behavior of unreinforced masonry buildings and the effects of shotcrete retrofit, a half-scale one-story masonry building was constructed and tested on the shake-table of Earthquake Research Center at Sharif University of Technology (SUT), Iran. The project was jointly founded by SUT and Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), with the support of The Organization for Development, Renovation, and Equipping of Schools of I.R Iran (DRES). The 3.7×3.7×2 [m] specimen was modeled after a typically built classroom, with eccentric window openings on one wall and a door opening on the opposite wall. The walls were constructed using half-scale 10.5×5.0×2.9 [cm]...

Seismic Performance Assessment of Historical Structures and Presenting their Seismic Rehabilitation Plan ; a Case Study : Soltanieh Dome

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asgari, Pouya (Author) ; Bakhshi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Preservation of historical monuments is a very important issue for future generations. The importance of this issue is doubled when we know that most of these buildings are traditionally built and do not have a single structure to withstand seismic loads. One of such buildings in our country is Bam Citadel, which was completely destroyed as the oldest brick building in the world during the 2003 Bam earthquake. In this project, we will try to find a model that can determine the structural behavior of the historical dome of Soltanieh for engineers in a case study. This building is a brick dome with a height of 48.5 meters and a diameter of 24.4 meters from the seventh century , which is unique...

Modeling and Evaluation of the Role of Authorities in Enhancing the Effectiveness of Seismic Vulnerability Reduction Policies

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Habibi Moshfegh, Peyman (Author) ; Kashani, Hamed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of study is the modeling and evaluation of the role of authorities in enhancing the effectiveness of seismic vulnerability reduction policies. Seismic vulnerability reduction of infrastructures depends on the measures that must be taken before a disaster occurrence. In addition to increasing disaster preparedness, an important part of the pre-disaster measures is taken to increase the robustness of the infrastructure. In some cases, measures to reduce the vulnerability of infrastructure, such as the resilience of residential buildings, require the coordinated role’s implementation of relevant organizations. Evidence shows that in many cases, policies to reduce the vulnerability...

Prioritization of a Building Portfolio for Seismic Retrofit Based on Risk Considering Structural Irregularities

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asadi, Mohammad (Author) ; Mahsouli, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study proposes a probabilistic approach to prioritize a collection of buildings in a region for seismic retrofit based on regional risk analysis. Risk in this context is the exceedance probability of total economic and social losses, which include both direct and indirect consequences resulting from building damage. The prioritization criterion is determined by the benefit-to-cost ratio of retrofit, where the benefit is measured by the reduction of seismic risk achieved through retrofitting. Hence, the buildings are analyzed both in their current state and after retrofit to compute the risk measure, i.e., the mean total loss. Buildings that yield the highest reduction of the risk...
