Concentration of Whey Proteins by Ultrafiltration Membrane Process
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Soltanieh, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Through our work, we conducted a three-stage solution to effectively reduce the impact of 'concentration polarization' and 'fouling' on ultrafiltration process. The stages were compromise of: 1. the design and selection of appropriate equipment along with outlining the operational parameters, 2. the pretreatment process design, and 3. the cleaning process design. Because of the presence of fat, there are incline both in permeate flux and the quality of the final product. Therefore, we studied the different methods of removing the lipid content, during pretreatment stage. After examining these methods, finally, we found that adding chitosan parallel with employing centrifugal separator is the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Soltanieh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Goodarznia, Iraj ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
Abstract
In this study production of bioethanol from corn fiber that is a lignocellulosic material is investigated. Experiments were performed in a membrane bioreactor. Bioethanol is a second generation biofuel that is considered recently because of the decrease in oil production and pollutions caused by fossil fuels. The feed was corn fiber which is considered suitable due to its low cost and availability in my country. Corn fiber is composed of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. We should increase cellulose fraction by pretreatment methods to get a higher conversion rate into bioethanol. We did this by acid pretreatment and the fraction was reached to 41%. In most of previous work experiments were...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Bastani, Daruoosh (Supervisor) ; Musavi, Abbas (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this study the main goal is preparing an appropriate UltraFiltration membrane from PolyVinyl Chloride for using as substrate in producing efficient Reverse Osmosis membranes to use in sea water desalination. each membrane should have some specifications to use it as reverse osmosis membrane’s substrate. One of the most important specifications is the appropriate pore sizes. To investigate this subject pure water flux and PolyEthylene glycol rejection of prepared membranes is tested. After investigation of this parameters and proving them, RO membranes are prepared using this membranes.

Investigation of Parameters for Controlling Morphology and Pore Size in UF Mambrans
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Seyfkordi, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Hemmati, Mahmud (Supervisor)
Abstract
In order to increase the life-cycle of membrane filtration systems, energy efficient membranes are being developed in membrane bioreactor systems. Technology has been introduced which allows the power required to aerate the membrane for cleaning to be reduced whilst still maintaining a high flux level. Mechanical cleaning processes have also been adopted using granulates as an alternative to conventional forms of cleaning; this reduces energy consumption and also reduces the area required for filtration tanks.Membrane properties have also been enhanced to reduce fouling tendencies by modifying surface properties. This can be noted in the biotechnology industry where membrane surfaces have...
Treatment of Blow-down water to Reuse by Membrane Processes, Nanofiltration and Reverse Osmosis
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Borghei, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Petrochemicals, refineries and power plants are among the biggest water-consuming industries. Of all systems in mentioned complex, most water is consumed in the cooling tower system, of which the feed water of the cooling tower accounts for the largest portion of water demand. Drainage loss (blowdown) which constitutes the biggest portion of the feed water losses, varies greatly with changes in source water quality and cooling water treatment. Scarcity of water, large quantities of cooling tower blowdown water and increasing of water price lead to activities for blowdown water treatment to reuse. In this project two pre-treatment methods and two final membrane treatment methods were...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Borghei, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Textile industry is one of the biggest consumers of water in the world. Effluents of textile industry ordinarily have huge rate of dye compounds which are toxic and persistent in environment. In case which they did not treat and discharged in the environment, they can create cancer, poisoning and etc. Finding efficient, economic and fast method for treating of these effluents is an important factor on the management. Combination of ultrafiltration membrane and reverse osmosis processes, has taken into consideration as an efficient and fast method of treatment of textile effluents in recent years. One of the fundamental problems of this process is the high costs of operation and chemical...
UF Polymeric Membranes Modification with Chemical Method for Enhancement of Their Performance
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Bastani, Daruoosh (Supervisor) ; Mousavi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this research, modification of polysolfune ultrafiltration membranes is investigated. The enhancement is done via grafting of the acrylic acid as a hydrophilic monomer on the membrane surface. This is a free radical grafting method in which free radicals are formed via redox reaction of ammonium persulfate and sodium metabisulfite as an initiator. Water contact angle, molecular weight cut-off, pure water flux and fouling experiments were used to figure out the optimum conditions for the membrane performance. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were utilized to determine morphological changes of the membrane surface. Furthermore, Fourier...
Fabrication and Characterization of a UF Ceramic Membrane based on TiO_2 Nanoparticles
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Taghavinia, Nima (Supervisor)
Abstract
UF membranes are widely used in various industries now, a major type of these membranes are ceramic membranes which are resistant to high temperatures and corrosive fluids. In this thesis we developed an anisotropic UF ceramic membrane based on 20nm TiO2 nanoparticles on a prous sustrate. We had two major challenges, the first one was to find a suitable prous substrate and the second one was to find an appropriate coating method. Our main task was to optimise the process conditions to achive a crackless and uniform membrane layer with minimal ups and downs. Lots of coating methods and TiO2 inks have been tried, finally we used a coating method which we called it “Soft Blade Coating”, with...

Abstract
Nowadays with the increasing population of the world and constraint or even water shortages, necessity of reuse the effluent of the treatment plants is further increased whearas the grey wastewater (wastewater related to bathroom, dishwasher and laundry). They are part of the household wastewater.quantity ranging from 65% to 75% sewage produced in the house is grey water. In many developed countries of the world the grey wastewater treatment and its use in non-potable wastewater like irrigation, car washing and toilet siphoning are commonplace. This wastewater is lower in COD and BOD than conventional wastewater but it still needs to be refined. There are varios methods including biological...
Application of Ultrafiltration to Produce High Solid Content Yogurt
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Roosta Azad, Reza (Supervisor) ; Razavi, Jalil (Supervisor)
Abstract
Labneh is a semisolid product that is produced by concentrating milk to approximately 23% total solids (wt/vol) by the traditional cloth bag method, ultrafiltration and direct reconstitution. For ultrafiltration membrane processing is carried out either before or immediately after fermentation. The effect of storage time on the flow properties of concentrated yogurt (labneh) was investigated using a rotational viscometer. Experiments were performed at after 0, 2, 5 and 14 days after production. The apparent viscosity of fresh sample was then measured as a function of shear rate. For a given shear rate, the apparent viscosity was measured as a function of shearing time. The increase in the...
