- polyamides have found great attractions in wide variety of applications due to their desirable mechanical and tribological properties and appropriate processability. Pure polymers are not suitable for this kind of application due to their low mechanical strength. High strength materials are needed for abrasive applications. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is one of the most popular materials for abrasive applications. In this study the effect of PTFE and surface modification on PA/PTFE composite properties is investigated. duo to modification of PTFE powder, PTFE is exposed to sodium naphtalenide (Na/naphtha) etchant so as to deflurinate the surface for obtaining carbonyl, carboxyl and hydroxyl functionality. In this study, in order to determine optimum value of variables Taguchi approach and Qualitek4 software is used. Due to study effect of PTFE and surface modification on PA/PTFE composite properties Morphology, mechanical, rheological, tribological tests was done. The results show that modification of PTFE surface leads to better dispersion of PTFE particles and adhesion of two polymer phases. Increasing PTFE content leads to decrease friction coefficient in cases of un-grafted PTFE particles and increase friction coefficient in case of grafted PTFE particles. Results of Mechanical properties show that increasing un-grafted PTFE content leads to decrease modulus, increase elongation at break and decrease tensile strength .impact strength in the case of un-grafted PTFE at low percentage of PTFE decrease but in 6% PTFE content increase. In the case of grafted PTFE, Increase PTFE content leads to increase modulus and tensile strength. Also Elongation at break first increase with addition of grafted PTFE and then decrease. Impact strength of these compounds is higher than PA66 but decrease with increase of PTFE content. Viscosity of these compounds in both case of grafted and un-grafted PTFE powder first decrease and then increase.
