- Abstract:
- Three distinct areas in linguistic studies are typically considered, namely, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Each category has a specific realm and deals with special linguistic phenomena. Presenting exact definition and clarification of the corresponding boundaries of each area is considered in both linguistics and philosophy of language. In order to explain the “meaning” for sentences of a language, this issue turns out to be vital. Representing the definition and evaluating the domain of each area, is the objective of the first chapter. In chapter two, some important semantic theories have been investigated. Since at first one semantic theory ought to clear its position about reference, consequently, the chapter two is mainly devoted to the subject of “reference”. Studying each theory and reviewing their criticisms, we have endeavored to illustrate the pragmatic role of “context” and, in fact, explain their overlapping with pragmatics by employing some examples. In chapter three we have investigated semantics of sentences and truth conditions. In addition, various levels of sentence are studied and it is our objective to elucidate how those levels are related to each area, namely semantics and pragmatics. For this issue we invoke two different concepts of context corresponded to the aforementioned areas. In chapter three, the essential conclusion, which is also the main inference of the present thesis, is that any level of sentence’s meaning with truth conditional content is concerned to semantics. All of the discussed ideas in chapter three and four are obtained from literal meaning by Recanati. In chapter four, Grice’s argument against this result is represented and, after that, Recanati’s criticism against him, for defending from the above mentioned conclusion of this thesis, is explained
