  7. Abstract:
  8. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of reported micropumps, we aimed to introduce a novel idea to diminish the disadvantages and promote the advantages of Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) micropumps. This novel idea operates based on a mercury slug rotation in a circular microchannel. This cyclic motion of the mercury slug which is similar to a piston, push the fluid in the microchannel and pump the flow. However, to bring this idea into the practice, it must be integrated with a specific valve. Fluid has not to go through this specific valve. In contrary, mercury slug has to pass across this valve. These two specifications must be considered during the design process of the valve. On the other hand, a theory is developed in ahead of design and fabrication process to diagnose the critical and the most influential parameters of this micropump. Based on this theory four distinct sketches are designed and fabricated. Each of these fabrications is tested and the parts which need revisions are distinguished. The modifications of these components are initiated by selection of materials and dimensions as well as fabrication and assembling techniques. This way, at the first step the actuation part of the micropump is completed. Then, the design of the valve, that must contain no moving part, is accomplished after four significant modifications in its initial draft. The final step of fabrication process is the methods which are used to prevent leakage in the micropump. At the experimental result section the impact of several dimensions in the performance of micropump are discussed. Also, changes in the performance (i.e. flow rate) of the micropump are investigated versus the pressure difference, working duration, electrical current and magnetic flux density. Subsequently, using these experimental data, the proposed theoretical model is validated. Eventually, the comparison of Rotary Magnetohydrodynamic micropump with other reported micropumps showed that it has increased the performance of currently most effective MHD micropump by a factor of 11.75.
