  7. Abstract:
  8. Washing a dead person’s body and dressing the corpse prior to burial is an act of love and necessity in many religions. Since the deceased loses all bodily functions at time of death, cleaning the body to eliminate odors is generally a hard and unpleasant task for many to perform. It has also been reported that tens of thousands of microbes are present on every square centimeter of a human corpse which is always a health risk to the persons performing the task. Among Islamic nations, preparation of the corpse is usually carried out in washing rooms (Ghassalkhaneh) of cemeteries in large cities. This preparation consists of two important operations namely as washing of the corpse (Ghosl) and wrapping the body in shroud (Kafan). Applying robotics and automation technologies for washing and preparation of a Moslem human corpse in accordance with the Islamic Shari’a laws is the challenging foundation of this research. With the population growth and the increasing number of deaths as a result, as compared to the old times, automating part of the procedure to increase the speed of the operation, reducing the health risks to the Ghassalkhaneh’s personnel and enhancing their quality of life has been the utmost objective of this project. We have named and patented this semi-automated corpse preparation machine as the “Paakshooy” in the Persian language. The whole process is composed of three operational units lined up in series; as the automatic washing chamber, drying cell, and the semi-automatic shrouding table. The thesis covers a thorough literature review of the subject in Islam and other religions, design of various machines and mechanism to automate the important tasks in accordance with Islamic laws, and the final detailed design and animation of the Paakshooy machine. In doing so, consultation with Islamic scholars and leaders has been a priority from the beginning of the project to the end
