- Abstract:
- Pipeline systems have a major role in civil infrastructure for transportation of energy sources including, petroleum, natural gas, and water. As most pipelines are located in hard-access location such as underground and sea as well as mountains, they are vulnerable to corrosion, cracks and thus, unpredictable failure. Failure of pipelines not only costs millions of dollars but also causes environmental damage, requiring continuous health monitoring systems to provide early detection and early warning of flaws such as corrosion and leaks. Structural health monitoring based on ultrasonic guided waves is used in structures as plates, composites, rods, piping and tubing. This research aims to investigate the waves-structure interaction in structural crack and corrosion monitoring in pipelines. An accurate yet simple electrical model has been developed to simulate the effects of ultrasonic wave to locate the occurrence and propagation of cracks in pipelines. The response of the electrical model is then repeated using a bond graph model. It is observed that occurrence of damage significantly alters both the amplitude and period of the waveform. In order to provide a preventive health monitoring system, the developed model is utilized to locate the occurrence of corrosion at early level. An in-situ pipeline monitoring system using bonded piezoelectric actuators to generate guided waves through the thickness, and sensors to detect the occurrence of damage has been developed.
