  7. Abstract:
  8. Pipelines are the preferred means for transporting of liquid or gas phase materials. The economy of many countries is extremely dependent upon a large network of pipelines systems to transport and distribute the nation’s energy resources. Damages to the pipe structure may cause leakage and result in economic losses or even loss of life. Developing methods for detecting the anomalies and damages to the structure before they lead to catastrophic events is vital. Multiple pipeline misadventures over the past several years have resulted in hundreds of fatalities and billions of dollars in property damages. These accidents demonstrate that the current monitoring methods are not sufficient and must be improved. To avoid such disasters, more thorough methods are needed. In this thesis we have introduced the utilization of a structural health monitoring (SHM) by using ultrasonic sensors for detection of corrosion or damages in pipelines networks. By integrity a SHM system, the structural integrity can be monitored continuously; thereupon the overall risks and costs would be reduced. Ultrasonic sensors are ideal for non-destructive testing due to their many advantages over conventional sensors. Oil and gas pipelines are an area where ultrasonic sensors are used to monitor and detect the presence of corrosions and defects. In this thesis, we have built a framework structure used for measuring the wall thickness of pipeline by using the pitch-catch method. This device can scan surface of an object (with accuracy of about 1mm) and collect the obtained information and show it on a diagram
