- Abstract:
- Since interconnects are playing a very important role in today’s IC technology, introducing new models and approximations is vital to IC designers. In this dissertation, maxwell equations are introduced as they are the main equations governing transmission lines. Different methods to model interconnects are also presented. Moreover, because of the importance of the step response of a system, available methods for finding the step response of interconnects are briefly discussed. Some approximations are also described, which result in faster but not very accurate responses. Delay and noise in integrated circuit connections have been the subject of several investigations for a long time. Since these values depend on different variables such as the length of the transmission line, resistance, capacitance, inductance per unit length of the transmission line and the driver profile, finding closed-form answersfor these parameters has not been possible up to now. In this paper, we seek a piece-wise linear approximation. On our path toward this goal, we considered a normalization method to reduce the number of transmission line variables. Using numerical optimization we introduced closed-form solutions for the step response of a transmission line. The proposed PWL approximation gives acceptable results for a wide range of normalized parameters of the line, including the whole range predicted by ITRS. The effects of adding a loading capacitance on the proposed approximation have been discussed in the last chapter
