Promoting Corporate Entrepreneurship in Successive Generations of Family Firms: Identifying the Competencies of Predecessors and Successors

  8. Corporate entrepreneurship has been shown to have a positive effect on the long-term growth of family firms. Therefore, identifying the factors affecting the promotion of corporate entrepreneurship in successive generations of a family firm could be critical. Out of a variety of factors the focus of this research is on indenfying the successor's competencies, the methods of developing the competencies in the successor, and the predecessor's competencies for developing the successor. In this regard, five Iranian family firm which have been entrepreneurial in different generations have been studied. The results show 17 competencies are needed for the successor to develop corporate entrepreneurship in the family firm. In addition, four main methods have been used for nurturing the successor, including mentoring. Besides, 8 competencies are requiered for the predecessor to develop the successor. The paper describes each of the competencies as well as the nurturing methods and explains the effects of them
