Evaluate and Compare the Performance of Steel Zipper Frames under Far and near Faults Earthquake

- Zipper frames were proposed to provide a solution of prevention of forming soft Story due to the existence of unbalanced vertical load in Chevron frames. In this study, at first, by performing a nonlinear pushover analysis on the 2D zipper frames with 3, 7 and 12 story and 3 span that the middle one are braced, a Response modification factor for zipper frames is proposed. Then, The seismic behavior of zipper frames is evaluated under far and near-fault earthquakes by nonlinear time history analysis and at the end of the research, the cyclic behavior and energy absorption capacity of these frames are compared with the 2-story-X chevron frames with 3 and 7 story. It is concluded that the 2-story-X chevron frames under a near-fault earthquake exhibits a better seismic behavior. It is also proved that the insertion of zipper elements in zipper frames cannot guarantee an unbalanced vertical load transfer through these elements and 3 transfer paths of unbalanced vertical load is proposed. The response modification factor of 6 for the zipper frames is suggested. Results show that the energy absorption function of zipper frames in low height structures is better than the 2-story-X chevron frames. While in moderate heights this is quite the opposite, and the energy absorption of the 2-story-X chevron frames is much better than the suspended zipper frame.
