  7. Abstract:
  8. As accelerators develop, literature about their distinctive characteristics and functions grow. Primary studies about business accelerators focused on defining the model and finding the distinctive characteristics of business accelerators. Later studies started to ask different kind of questions about outcome, functions and especially different models of accelerators. . Accelerators in developing countries are new phenomenon. Considering the fact that economic and entrepreneurial ecosystem are different in developing countries, accelerators in these countries have some distinctive characteristics which are not studied deeply in small accelerators literature.Employing Pauwels’ design elements framework (2016), this paper aims to identify the distinctive functions of accelerators in developing countries using 7 case study of most successful Iranian accelerators. 6 distinctive characteristics were identified which, we believe, are the result of less matureelements of innovation ecosystems in developing countries. These findings show that Extended Business Accelerators (EBA) emerge in developing countries to compensate for some general weaknesses of the less mature innovation ecosystems of developing countries. While theoretical implications of the paper suggest a modified model for characterizing accelerators, an important policy implication for developing counties is that Extended Business Accelerators maybe an efficient policy tools to reform the innovation ecosystems
