  7. Abstract:
  8. Occurrence of natural disasters such as flood, windstorms, tsunamis and earthquakes has caused striking effects on critical infrastructures like power systems in recent decades. There are some examples of high-impact low-possibility (HILP) events which causes catastrophic effects on power systems. Traditionally, planning and operational studies of power system have been run taking into account some reliability metrics. Although, the reliability indices can represent the ability of a system in confronting with possible failures of components, they are unable to efficiently consider the effects of severe events such as earthquake and other HILP events. Moreover, traditional power systems were designed to supply power to all loads during normal circumstance. However, these systems become unable to support the loads in the case of extreme disasters. Therefore, in recent years, researchers have been discussed that it is essential to design power networks in such a way that not only being reliable to known and predictable treats, but also being resilient against extreme and unpredictable events. Among different disasters, earthquake is one of the most unpredictable hazard, which may cause widespread disruptions on vital infrastructures such as power distribution systems. Distribution systems in electricity industry acts as the main link between bulk power system and the customers. The radial nature of these systems makes them more vulnerable to customers interruptions compared with transmission and generation systems during an extreme event like earthquake. Moreover, more than 80% of power outages occur due to various faults in power distribution systems. For these reasons, boosting the resilience of this section of power systems is requisite. In new version of power distribution systems Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) play important role. Therefore, develop any operational and planning studies without considering the effects of such players become useless. BESS which have grown dramatically in power distribution networks in recent years are a good idea for improving the resiliency. According to these remarks, in this thesis a comprehensive method is presented for finding optimal size of BESS to achieve high level of resiliency in distribution networks. The key contributions of this thesis include:- Offering a general proposed structure for modeling earthquake phenomena as a determined threat for resiliency studying;- Proposing a model for evaluating the vulnerability of power distribution network lines by using the concept of fragility curves;- Modeling the effects of buildings on distribution lines during an earthquake;- Introducing a new method for optimal allocation of BESS in a distribution network; and; - Finding optimal size of BESS with the aim of boosting the resiliency
