  7. Abstract:
  8. The present study is concerned with the development of a rubric which can help to have an objective, valid, and reliable assessment of short stories and novels written by creative writing students. The 30 participants of the study who were literature and creative writing experts took part in rubric development, validation, and reliability estimation. Review of the related literature, as well as the administration of a Likert scale questionnaire and a series of unstructured interviews led to the identification of ten elements which were used to construct the first version of the creative writing rubric. To ensure validity of the developed rubric, 18 literature and creative writing experts were requested to review it and comment on the appropriateness of this assessment tool for measuring the intended construct. Some of the experts also suggested revisions to the content of the rubric. These comments were collected and reviewed by the researcher to both explore the validity of the developed rubric and improve its quality by incorporating provided information and feedback into the finalized rubric. Following these procedures, the researcher came up with an analytical rubric consisting of nine elements namely narrative voice, characterization, story, setting, mood and atmosphere, grammar and writing mechanics, dialogue, plot, and image which were defined at four performance levels. Reliability of the developed rubric was also checked by having two experts evaluate 19 samples of student writings using the developed rubric and calculation of both interrater and intrarater reliability which were established at 0.79 and 0.83 accordingly. The significance of the development of this rubric are discussed and its implications for teaching and assessing creative pieces of writing are also presented
