- Abstract:
- Technological catchup has been one of the topics of interest for researchers and policymakers, especially in developing countries, and has been studied from various dimensions. The catchup in the renewable energy industries is important due to the possibility of benefiting from its economic dimensions along with responding to the growing energy demand in these countries, as well as accessing the sustainable sources of energy supply. In the literature, various dimensions have been studied to investigate the factors affecting the technological catchup, one of the most important of them is the technology life cycle. In answer to the question of what stages of the technological area life cycle is suitable for new innovators to enter the industry, there is a dilemma about the specialization pattern of new and incumbent innovators. Some consider the early stages of the life cycle to be appropriate and some others suggest that later stages are better. In this study, due to the catchup of China in the two industries of wind energy and solar energy, using the network main path method and Louvain community detection method, the behavior of this country as well as the behavior of new and incumbent innovators in the industry and according to the life cycle of technological areas was examined and explained. The results indicate the competitive advantage of new innovators in areas with less path dependency. Also according to the results, China in both industries, initially by focusing on the mature areas created technological capabilities, and after that entered to the early stages of the life cycle and by leapfrogging and path creating this country got the ability of successful catchup
