- Abstract:
- The process of aging is accompanied by problems that can affect the daily activities of an elderly. Recent studies have shown that the use of virtual reality technology provides a variety of diagnostic methods and clinical systems to prevent and delay cognitive aging to ensure the normal life of the elderly. In this project, efforts have been made to design some virtual reality-based games focusing on memory and recall in the form of three scenarios of finding address, finding car, and virtual-reality based maze game for the elderly to prevent cognitive decline and developing the dementia so that the difficulty of the game level ahead of each elderly can be adjusted according to his or her performance. Participants in this study were 5 elderlies with an average age of 60 years and each participant had 10 to 12 sessions to play the designed games which each session lasted about 15 minutes. To evaluate the results of this study, each participant’s cognitive performance will be evaluated using GDS, MMQ, MMSE and MoCA cognitive questionnaires before and after interventions. According to posttest and pretest questionnaire scores, designed virtual reality games had impact on participants' performance based on MMSE & MoCA cognitive questionnaires so that MMSE test population mean score has increased from 26.2 to 27.4 (p-value:0.098, Cohen’s d value: 1.096) and MoCA test population mean score has increased from 21.8 to 25 (p-value:0.09, Cohen’s d value:0.955). The successful implementation of such an idea provides a wider capacity for services to the elderly with cognitive problems in the country as is estimated that in the next 20 years, nearly 25 percent of the country's population will be older than 65
