- Lobe blowers are positive displacement machines (PDM) that are widely used in various industries. The efficiency of lobe blowers depends on the clearance between fixed and moving parts. If the clearance between the parts increases, backflow occurs, which means that the flow returns from the high-pressure zone of the outlet to the low-pressure zone of the inlet, and this makes the blower not have the initial efficiency and work with a lower capacity than its design. This research is carried out with the aim of checking the feasibility of backflow detection using two condition monitoring methods, including ultrasonic and thermography techniques. The sample of this research includes seven blowers model GQ 22.23xz manufactured by AERZEN company, which are located in three modules of DRI factory of Khuzestan Steel Company. Data collection has been done in a period of one year. The results of the data analysis show that backflow can be detected using the ultrasonic technique, but the thermography technique is unable to detect backflow due to the use of water injection in the inlet of the blowers in operation. In this research, the validation of the results has been done by conducting an experiment that includes blocking the outlet of the blowers and measuring the ampere consumption and the output pressure. The findings of validation confirm the results obtained from the ultrasonic technique. Also, the internal clearance of the machines in which backflow has been detected has increased
